Linda, I just read your post of 11/10/08 and found it inspiring. I am 61 and this is my second week on the Zone. I think I've been doing well, but I don't feel any different. Would you mind giving me an example of what you eat in a day? Like Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, snacks? I'm allowed 11 blocks and find this very confusing.....thanks so much. Joan |

Hi Sue Question for you. I make Zone smoothies at work for breakfast but am feeling hungry after 2 hours of eating. I have taken out one carb as you suggested but am not getting into the Zone. This is what they are made up of 1 cup strawberries (1C)- sometimes have blueberries(1/2 cup) 1 cup soy milk (1P, 1C, 1F) 9 almonds (3F) 14 grams of protein powder (2P) Should this be keeping me happy for 3-4 hours? I used the LBM calculator - was bit of a shock!!! Never mind. That will be changing soon. regards Margaret |

Hi!
That smoothie wouldnt keep me in the Zone. Looks like you don't have enough fat. With the block system, half of the 3 grams fat needed to balance each complete block of P, C, and F is in the low fat protein block (that's 1.5 grams fat) and the other half of the fat is in the monounsaturated fat block (another 1.5 g fat). Protein powder usually is fat free, so you're missing some fat there. Also, some people can't stay in the Zone as well with liquids for carb (your soy milk) because they enter the bloood stream quicker than solid food. I'd suggest to try the shake this way:
21 grams of protien powder (3P) 2 cups strawberries OR 1 cup strawberries plus 1/2 cup blueberries (2C) at least 18 almonds (3F plus the F missing in the proten powder) Add a little water if you need it to blend.
You can even add up to a few more blocks of almonds. An alternative would be to use 2 or 3 teaspoons of olive oil for the fat.
Dr Sears has a recipe called "The Big Brain Shake" which is the shake I just explained above but with 3 blocks of mixed berried (or 2 of you're a 2C person) and 1T liquid Omega Rx OR 1T olive oil.
How many blocks did the calculator come up with for you?

Hi Sue Thanks!! I followed this Zone recipe except for taking out one carb block. I didnt think to look at the fat in the protein powder - I looked at the protein count and divided by 7 and it was the exact amount that I needed. I used to drink milk but have started having soy. I still have so much to learn about the Zone. Cant wait to make the smoothie tomorrow and see if I can get into the Zone. The calculator came up with 11 blocks for me. I am doing 45 minutes of exercise with my daughter from Mon to Fri (we did boxing at the gym today) and then on the weekends go for a walk with my husband on Sundays. Saturday is usually spent going to the farmers market and housework! So I put "active" for the exercise. For some reason when I put in my abdomen measurements it kept taking it back 3 inches ..... thanks again for your help Margaret |

<div class='NTForums_Quote'>Posted By Margaret on 11/18/2008 9:11 PM So I put "active" for the exercise. For some reason when I put in my abdomen measurements it kept taking it back 3 inches ..... thanks again for your help Margaret</div> You’re welcome Margaret! Glad you happened to mention this 3 inch info! This means your measurements are beyond the parameters built into the calculator. Am I correct that you're close to 50% body fat? You might not be eating enough blocks daily for your specific needs. Ok, so here's what Barry says to do when your weight and/or measurements are greater than the limits of the calculator. Do the calculation by hand assuming 50% body fat and increasing your activity level (carrying the extra weight is like strength training 24/7). Here's the calculation for a person with your activity level: 1. Divide your total weight by 2 to find the LBM you will base the calculation on. 2. Multiply your LBM times 0.9 (Very Active level, your actual level of Active increased by one level, requires that you eat 0.9 grams of protein for every pound of LBM.). This is your daily protein requirement. 3. Divide your daily protein requirement by 7, rounding up if the result is not a whole number (7 grams of protein to one block). This is your daily block requirement. This should help both to jumpstart your weight loss and to eliminate hunger. It will still be ok for you to drop 1 C block. Judge the amount of carb you need by any hunger you might have. I'll be glad to help if yoru not sure how to do that. If you haven't been eating enough, it could take several days for your insulin level to be solidly within the Zone range. Studies show it takes 4 days of consecutively eating appropriate Zone meals and snacks in order to lower insulin into the Zone. Keep us updated! |

Hi Sue Good news. When I jumped on the scales this morning I have lost 1 kilo (2.2 lbs). I grabbed a tape measure and have lost 1 inch. I am happy! I am so surprised that the calculator only goes up to 50. I carry most of my weight in the stomach area and hips which I know is not good but am determined to change this around. Have just done your calculations for the blocks. I have come up with a figure of 12.921 so that is 13 blocks!! Thanks for the info on this as there are probably a lot of people who are like me on 11 blocks when they should be having more to get the weight shifting. How often should we look at the block calculator to see if we are having the correct amount of blocks? Made the smoothie last night. I put a little water in to blend it - it is a lot thicker than the usual one I make. I am having trouble drinking it from the bottle so tomorrow will put it in a bowl and eat with a spoon! ha ha ... Thanks again Sue Margaret |

Hi, Margaret! I would check the block calculations if you have a sustained change in activity level (like as if your routine changes, but not for just one day of change). I would also recheck for every change in size of clothing (probably about every 10 pounds or so). From personal experience, as I lost weight and gained lean body mass, my block requirement edged closer to 12 blocks. This change occurred as my body changed, and did not have anything to do with a change in my activity level. |

Hi Margaret! You'd recalculate when your LBM of activity levels change significantly. In your case, keep tabs on it by hand, assuming 50% for body fat and LBM, until such time that your stats fit into the calculator without it changing them, and your body fat% goes below 50%. At that point you can go by the calculator's block recommendation for you. |

Thanks Sue and Cranberrycat! I am enjoying the 13 blocks at the moment. I was doing a few "dummy" calculations on the block counter and will probably one day need to have 11 blocks. Unless at the age of 55 I become an Elite Athlete!!! I suppose as the weight comes off your body wont be wanting extra food. I only need to loose around 2 inches then will be able to do the calculations again. The weight is coming off slowly (still reckon menopause is making it harder) and am feeling great. The fish oil seems to have made a big difference to my joints. I dont ache anymore. Margaret |

I'm new here and having the same issue. I've been on the diet for 3 weeks and have lost only 1 pound. Any advice? Also, I've only at 8 blocks a day and am very active (swim 2000 yards a day, pilates once a week, and yoga 3 times a week, and 10000 steps a day) Needless to say, I'm quiet distressed that I've only lost like one lously pound. Thanks, Carol |

Only 8 blocks per day? No wonder you are having problems! I would advise that you check out the bodyfat calculator and plug in your stats. I bet that you are going to come up with the fact that you need to eat more blocks. Adult women should not go lower than 11 blocks per day. Let me know how that works out! |

Hi Carol, Eights block daily is not enough for an adult. You may be using one of the original Zone books to figure out your blocks. Barry Sears has since added a minimum block requirement of 11 blocks daily for all adults. If you calculate blocks by hand from the tables in a Zone book and the result is less than 11, you should go with the minimum of 11. To double check your requirement, use the Zone block and body fat calculator (link at right). |

| Thanks Sue and Cranberrycat!!! I just read all of this post and I was so happy to discover that I have a clue on why I can not follow completly the zone plan. I was trying with 11 blocks but I was getting hungry, I tried adding fat but sometimes it just didn't feel enough. Now, that I made the calculations by hand it shows past the 14 for protein requirements so I am so exited!!!! Thanks for all of your tips!!!! I have read almost all of the book but the info that you give here it's soooooooo helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| I used the calculations in the "Mastering the Zone Book". Is the calculator you mention different? The book says you should never go below 8 and my calculations actually came out at 6 so I uped it to the 8. And I'm truly not hungry on the 8. |

Hi Carol,
After MTZ was written Dr. Sears changed to minimum to 11. The calculator on this site uses the same factors and formula as MTZ , but it will show a result of 11 blocks daily for those inividuals who's calculations work out to be less than 11. 8 is not enough. |

| First time on this message board...hope this gets through...I have just started the zone. I'm 54, had a total hysterectomy at 49, on HRT and taking healthy supplements, however, I am wondering if I take your suggestion to raise my fats to 6 how can that help me loose weight? I know it lowers insulin but I can't help but worry it will make me gain more. I am at least 12 pounds over weight and thick in the middle too. I also read the zone diet is not for loosing weight -- how much are you exercising? Help and thanks :confused and frustrated. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
