Well...its Sunday and I feel totally discouraged. I am up about a lbs from a low from TWO WEEKS AGO! I don't know what has happened. I was loosing 2 lbs a week...and now its just stopped. I do feel a little puffy...but not sure what I could have eaten to make me retain water. Measurements are the same. I guess if I wasn't exercising so much...it wouldn't be an issue...but there is no way that I shouldn't be loosing weight with what I've been eating and exercising.

Yesterday...

1 cup coffee w/ a splash of 1% milk..splenda (I'm seriously wondering if this is an issue with the splenda)

B: 1 cup oatmeal/ 3/4 cup CC (cottage cheese) ...1.5 t almond butter.

L: 3 oz chicken...3 cups cooked spinach ..

D: 2 cups 1% milk, 1 oz chicken ...1/2 cup blueberries

Yesterday, I forget to eat my snack cause I was so busy in the yard. I worked hard in the yard all day...drank more water than I have been...but had a diet 7 up at the end up day.

I want to say its *water*...but d&^%....its been really hot here, does your body retain water when you are working out in the yard and its really hot. I tried to drink lots of water, but maybe it wasn't enough.

Oh...I took some cold pill cause I'm feeling a cold coming on...or maybe it just allergies. Maybe thats part of it.
But...its suck.

I've also heard milk products will make you retain water...so maybe I need to cut down on those. Seems like when I don't eat a lot of milk products the scale seems to move better :-/

Hi,

Fotomom: Don't be down. I am sure this coming week will be better!

Thanks for the "Hellos". All is well here. A little freaked out, went shopping for my 1st week on the Zone. I got almost everything from the shopping list listed in the "A week in the Zone" book. It took me a long time to get everything. I am not a cook.... that is the problem we eat a lot of fast food. So this grocery trip was slightly painful and was most likely written on my face. I was unable to find,
Lean ground lamb
Soy protein powder (Ok, ok, forgot to look for that one)
Scallions (?=will have to look that one up)
canned chickpeas
snow peas (?)
Hamburger rolls (?)
coriander (?)
celery salt (? hope reg salt works just the same)
Anyhow, I purchases some new colorful Tuperware, excited
Sceduled Tue & Thur times with the personal trainer
Jeez, some of the stuff I did find, I never thought I would be eating or buying it...problem #1 discovered.

Later, I plan to prep my meals for tomorrow and will post. Ready to start. I think I will take pic tonight and do measurements in the morning.

Good Morning Everyone, hope you had a nice weekend. Last night didn't go exactly as planned. I had a guest over for a mini BBQ. So, my dinner consisted of a cheesebuger (with 1 slice cheese and a little ketchup) on a whole wheat roll, a 99% fat free dog (turkey dog) on a whole wheat roll w/ketchup, 3 bites of mac salad, 4 corn chips and seltzer. I skipped my before bed snack, don't think it effected me last night. I actually went to bed at 2am, because I was assisting her w/ a move.
Scale actually went down...lost 3 pounds, yeah.
For today, I will work and stick w/my game plan:
Breakfast
Southwestern Style Scrambled Eggs w/Fire Roasted Corn, Salsa, Bell Peppers, Pepper-Jack Cheese & Nine Grain Toast
Lunch
Santa Fe Style Wrap with Pepper-Jack Cheese, Tomato, Avocado, Corn, Black Beans and Baby Lettuce.
Dinner
Fillet of Tilapia w/ Red Mole Sauce with Zucchini Rounds Stewed Marinara Sauce and Black Barley Pilaf
Snack
Black Bean & Avocado Wheat Crostini
Dessert
Cherry Vanilla Ch cake
Have a great day all!

Julia, just going back to your post from the 30th, don't worry if you went over by 1/2 carb. Most people will not notice that difference at all. It is still probably within the zone's ratio of protein to carb, which is 0.6.

Kathy, it could be that you are just picking up some lean body mass. Look at what you are doing: kickboxing, walking/jogging, water aerobics. Plus your work in the yard...

Give it some time, you are doing great!

I have lost "weight" very slowly this year, but I have also been exercising. My fat loss was 8 pounds, but I also gained 5 pounds of LBM, so my net loss was only 3 pounds. But, the important thing is that the FAT is going away.

Hang in there!

Well, I don't know how this will go, but I just threw a quick lunch together! I put a bag of frozen veggies in a dish, microwaved them, then cracked open a few eggs and drizzled some olive oil over the top. Seasoned with salt/pepper, of course. Anyway, that is lunch!

My breakfast was a smoothie.

I left early to go "early bird" swimming. I am working on my laps, this was basically my first time out for a long time, as I have not been able to work swimming into my schedule. So, it was a bit tiring.

Will also go to Curves later. Who knows, if I have time for a walk, I will hopefully do that at lunchtime!

Good Morning everybody...

Well...school is out and kids are home :-/ :-) Its raining here today, which I'm glad ...cause it makes me stay out of the yard...for some much paperwork that I need to do!

Already have done my kickboxing/pilates class..so that is out of the way.

Breakfast: 1 egg, 4 egg whites...1/4 cup b. beans, 1/2 cup salsa.

L: not sure

D: not sure ;-)

I want to keep things lite...low on the dairy...and see if I can get this scale to move.

Congrats to Christina for the scale moving again!!

I am thinking that my immune system is run down.....it shouldn't be...since I'm eating very healthy, working out and getting good sleep...but there are signs because I had 2 colds in the last 6 weeks...My throat is so sore now that I woke up at 2:00 a.m. to gargle...I thought it was allergies...but its REALLY SORE. Two weeks ago, I developed canker sores in my mouth (virus)...and so I think I need to up my vitamins ( or actually TAKE them) and then buy some Zone oils....Any recommendations???

Sue K...what do you take?

Hi everyone

well, I didn't do so well over the weekend.....we had company and althougth I *tried* to plan in advance so I would have my Zone options covered I found I dipped into the 'non-Zone' options more than I should have. I'm going to blame it on the change of pace over the weekend and dust myself off and forget about it. I am up 1.8 lbs but going to focus on starting fresh again today. At least I kept up with my exercise routine so although my tummy feels a little off and I'm tired/sluggish today I know that at least I've keep up the fitness end of things!

Hope you all are well! Kathy, I hope your cold passes quickly.

I have heard that propolis is excellent for getting rid of canker sores! Get it in tincture form at a health food store, and swish it around your mouth, won't hurt to gargle a bit with it for the throat.

I did ok over the wknd, but had a gin and tonic last night with my halibut and veggies. Didnt do much harm...weight up about a quarter of a lb....which I expected. But I walked a lot yesterday, hoping to offset the drink that I was planning to have.

Jana: I love PX 90!!

I am very weak in my upper body (unable to do pullups and not many pushups)...so i bought the bands which is an alternative in the workouts. There are a lot of motifications that they show you...but its kick butt time. I highly recommend it. My kickboxing class instructor does a lot of the moves that they use in the plyometrics and its all really good. I have not stayed with PX 90 workout schedule cause I do so much stuff with a group in town...but I use it to *fill in* when I'm doing home workouts.

I think its the best $$$ I have spent on a workout program..

Thanks for the PX review info Kathy. I've never actually known or talked to anyone who had used it before and have always wondered about the program. I think that will be my next 'big' exercise purchase. Also want to get the Wii Active that Christina was talking about last week (or maybe the week before??) once my honeymoon is over with Wii Fit.

Hope your feeling better soon Kathy....I swear by Cold FX...pop a few as soon as I feel any discomfort in my throat and it usually doesn't stick around for more than a day.

Take Care

Hi Kathy!

I'd caution you against trying to self diagnose when it comes to designing a long term supplementation plan. A good resource for determining your own unique supplementation needs is a medical doctor who is also well versed in complementary alternative medicine, and diet and nutrition.

You asked what I take. Here's my current supplementation plan as determined by my endocrinologist, who meets the qualifications I described. I'll list the specific products or brands when it makes a difference (according to my doctor). Vital Nutrients brand, available nationwide, is sold only by physicians.

Fish oil (Dr. Sears Zone)

Multi vitamin and mineral without iron, containing a wide array of other health enhancing factors ("Micronutrient Support" by Dr. Sears Zone)

Calcium and magnesium with bone support nutrients ("Osteo Nutrients II" by Vital Nutrients)

Magnesium (in addition to that previous supplement)

"B-Complex" (Vital Nutrients)

Estered C

D-3 (Vital nutrients)

Coenzyme Q-10

Green tea supplement ("Weight Loss Support" by Dr. Sears Zone)

Sea Health Plus by Dr. Sears Zone

Thanks Sue K...I understand what your saying ;-)

The thing with the cold..is that I *thought* it was allergies...so I didn't take the normal precautions I usually take...Wellness Formula etc. Now I have this huge sinus cold/headache thingy going on. I was supposed to give blood today...:-( But, I think that I should just not do it...I know my body will have to work extra hard to make more blood...when it could be just working so I don't get worse :-( I hate not giving blood ...I feel so BAD!

Oh well...next time.

You're welcome!

Yes, be good to your body and let it recover before giving blood. You can always give in a week or two (you can usually find donation hours somewhere close by, where we live anyway).

Take care! :-)

Well, my weekend was ok. We were extremely busy. Yesterday afternoon, we decided to just not worry about the rest of the "to do" list and went to my folks' for a bbq and swimming. I had a small cheeseburger...on the bun!....and some cucumber & onion salad. I piled the lettuce and tomatoes on the burger so that I felt like I was eating more than I was. Didn't get my workout in, so I swam some laps, tread water for as long as I could (maybe 30 minutes), and used the diving board to do pullups :-) Had a 1 block bedtime snack of lima beans and cheese.

Over the weekend, my weight was fickle...up and down a few pounds every day. So I did not weigh this morning. Will see how it looks in the morning. Also calibrated my scale and found that it is .2 pounds light. Did stomach and hip measurements last week, but no change. However, my jeans are going on much easier, no sucking in, wiggling, or stretching required. Doesn't make sense, but I'll just enjoy it.

Today:
B: egg whites, salsa, black beans, sour cream
S1: black beans, deli chicken, cheese, almonds
L: flatout bread, lettuce, tomatoes, tuna salad w/lt mayo & mustard
S2: black beans, light swiss cheese, tomato, almonds
S: ? something w/ground turkey

I hope everyone has a great week! It's in the 90's here and sunny. I can't wait for the summer!

Kathy, I know how you feel, I thought I was hit by an "allergy", too. But, I am beginning to doubt myself on that "self-diagnosis".

I was working in the garden, and was going to spread out some peat moss. I opened up the bale, and when the wind hit it, it immediately went to my nose, and I felt "sinusy" ever since. I would have thought by now that it would have gone away, but it hasn't. So, now I am doubting myself, too.

Anyway, when I feel a cold coming on, I usually take some "Air Health" (can't remember the brand name). It is an effervescent tablet that you dissolve in water and then drink it down. It does have some vitamin supplements in them, vitamin A, C, E, magnesium, zinc, selenium, an herbal blend of echinacea, ginger root, etc. Anyway, I am not sure if it TRULY is effective, but I haven't had a cold for a VERY long time. Anytime I feel one coming on, it seems to just "go away".

Don't know if that is helpful to you, but that is what I do. I generally don't take much else for everyday supplementation, except for fish oil and some vitamin D and calcium (and hopefully I can remember to take the vitamins!).

Hi Everyone!

Here's my day today so far (exercise and eating, I'm a 13 block a day Zoner):

Breakfast: Brownie Batter Smoothie

Snack: 1 Sweet and Salty Nut Crunch Dr. Sears Zone bar

1 hour of hiking in the woods at a nearby park

Lunch: Fennel, cucumber, pineapple and blueberry salad with an oil and vinegar dressing, deli-style turkey

The plan for the rest of my day:

Strength training for 45 min., followed by 15 - 20 tuning out and doing some yoga stetches

Snack: 1/2 cup plain yogurt with macadamia nut butter

Dinner chicken breasts and low fat Italian flavored chicken sausage on the barbie, spiced black beans (includes black plums and veggies), strawberries and blueberries for dessert

Bedtime Snack: not sure yet

I'll post the black bean recipe in my recipe thread when I get a chance.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Why OmegaRx From Zone Labs?

Certified Purity and Proven Potency

Zone Labs’ Ultra Refined Omega-3 Concentrates are three times fresher and contain less than 1/10th the mercury than what is allowed by the Norwegian Medicinal Standard and European Pharmacopoeia Standard

"IFOS – THE TOP GLOBAL PURITY STANDARD FOR OMEGA-3 FROM FISH"

Zone Labs products show no detectable lead or mercury when tested down to 10ppb, which is 10 times below the Norwegian Medicinal Standard and European Pharmacopoeia Standard limits.

Zone Labs products are three times fresher than the minimum allowed by the Norwegian Medicinal Standard and European Pharmacopoeia Standards (based on average peroxide values).

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.

8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured

Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.

 1. Extraction of fish oil
 2. Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
 3. Absorption – remove heavy metals
 4. Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
 5. Oil conversion to ethyl esters
 6. Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
 7. True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
 8. Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating

Clean Sources

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.

Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.

Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3

Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
