| Okay, here is my delima. I am a 19 year old woman, height 5' 7" and now weighs 155. My usual weight around a year ago ran close to 130 or below and I was also quite fit. Of course heading off to college didn't help the struggle to keep my weight in check, but now no matter what I do I can't seem to get this extra weight off now. :? I know 25lbs doesn't seem like a lot to some who are trying to lose much more, but it's really begining to worry me that I can't lose this weight. I have been following the zone for almost a month now very strictly and still no results. I have also been reading many of the postings trying to figure out just what I need to to. It seems like Sue, is the wonder woman when it comes to answering quesitons and helping and that she have been able to help a lot of people. I would really appreciate it if you could help me too!! If anyone else has any ideas of what I should do or anything I would appreciate it!!! thanks ~ meghan |

| Hi, I'd be happy to help. :) I'll need the following info: LBM (or abdomen at the belly button height, and hip measurements), type(s) and number of hours of aerobic exercise per week, type(s) and number of hours of strength training exercise per week, a realistic sample of your daily menu of meals and snacks which includes timing and the specific foods and amounts of each. It would also be helpful to know if you're taking any medications. Some stimulate insulin, and we would adjust your block balance if you take these.
And one last question. Have you experienced hunger, and if so when you have it do you feel focused, or not?
I'll look forward to hearing more from you.[/color:ba101e6106] |

| Sue, you stated above that some medications stimulate insulin... do you have examples of some? Also what about herbal supplements? Can they also stimulate insulin?
Right now I am taking Ritalin in the morning and Pamelor at night. During the day I've been experimenting with various other natural supplements... I take B12 because I am a vegetarin... plus I'm taking the recommended Omega Oil and Vitamin E. I've also been sporadically trying out HTP 5, DHEA and Rhodiola Rosae....
Is there anything I should or should not be concerned about with these medications and supplements??? |

| Okay, thanks so much for your help. Here are my measurements: Hips- 37, Abdomen- 34.5, Height- 67.5. My exercise usually consists of walking, jogging, or biking an average of 2 hours per week. I don't have access to a gym right now because it is the summer semester and I am not taking classes, therefore I am not allowed to use the college facilities. I don't do too much weight training anyways though. I did a little bit in high school for various sports, but I've been a dancer since I was young so I'm guessing that is what kept me toned, untill now. :(
Here is an average day for me:
wake up at 7:00am
8am breakfast:
3 pieces of turkey bacon
1/2c cottage cheese
1/2c blueberries
whole pear
9 cashews crushed & mixed in cottage cheese
9:00am -2:00pm work
2:30pm Lunch
Romaine salad:
1/2c cottage cheese
1/2 avacado
7 to 8 cut baby carrots
tomatoe
redwine vinegarette for dressing (amt??)
4:30 5ish Snack:
Zone perfect bar
7:30 8ish Dinner:
Salmon filet, Chicken breast, or ground turkey patty (3p)
1c squash, 1c zucchini steamed
1c strawberries
small romaine salad:
1/2 avacado
tomatoe
redwine vinegarette (amt??)
Bedtime snack 11-12ish:
1/3c applesause
slice of lowfat cheese
I usually don't get all the required water, but close to it. Around 48-54oz a day. The only medication I am taking is my zyrtec for my allergies. I actually haven't experienced hunger unless I've missed one of my major meals if I've been traveling or busy and have forgotten to eat. I have felt much more focused since I've begun the Zone lifestyle and I haven't yet had a headache. I use to get them atleast one every week or two weeks. I must say I am happy with that result! Hope this information helps and I'll be excited to hear from you. Thanks! |

| Hi Meghan,
I've looked at your info and I'm confident that with a few adjustments you will see progress. Your lack of progress is caused by eating too little, drinking too little, less than favorable meal timing, and eating unbalanced meals. Zone Perfect bars (unfavorable) and the occasional missed meal are not helping. These thinks are all preventing you from lowering you insulin into the range of the Zone. The Zone diet is all about hormonal control, with the focus being on insulin lowering. The suggestions I make will help you to lower your insulin levels. In addition, at your LBM (114 lbs) a weight of 130 would not be quite appropriate. I'll address all of these issues separately.
We'll begin with your weight loss goal of 25 lb. You now have an LBM of approximately 114 lb. 130 lbs total weight would put you at about 12% body fat , which would be dangerously low for a woman. The ideal bodyfat % range for a female is 18 to 22%. At 114 LBM, this would be a weight of about 139 to 146. So a weight loss goal of 10 to 15 lb would be more appropriate for you.
At 114 LBM and your activity level, you require 12 or 13 blocks per day. You're currently eating 11 blocks a day. These 11 blocks are also missing some of the necessary carb (your carb amounts are too low), which means you're not even getting a full 11 balanced blocks. This is too little for you. When one doesn't eat enough, the body perceives starvation, slows the metabolism accordingly, and doesn't burn stored fat. To remedy this you need to add [b:7b2fa8117d]at least [/b:7b2fa8117d]one more fully balanced block of P, C, and F to your day. My suggestion would be to add a one block snack in the morning. This will give you a 12 block day. You may even do better with 13 blocks, depending upon the accuracy of your estimation of your amount of exercise. If we find you'd do better with 13, you would simply add one more balanced one block snack to your day.
Your water intake is not sufficient. A [b:7b2fa8117d]minimum [/b:7b2fa8117d]of 64 oz a day is recommended for a sedentary person. Exercise, and hot weather increase one's need for water. Most Zoners drink more than the 64 oz minimum. (Pesonally I drink about a gallon a day, and even a little more in hot weather). The fat burning metabolism of the Zone requires more water. I've read that it increases one's need for water by an additional 50% over that of a carb burning metabolism. Your low water intake is adding to your lack of progress. It may also be causing some fluid retention. Try to drink more. Do so gradually if it seems difficult to increase.
The Zone guideline regarding timing is that one shouldn't go more than 5 waking hours without eating. If you go over 5 hours, insulin levels will most likely go out of the Zone. You have 6.5 hours between breakfast and lunch. Adding the one block snack I already mentioned to your morning (between breakfast and lunch) will take care of this. I also noticed you have a 2 block lunch and a 2 block snack in the afternoon. While this is fine, if you find you're becoming hungry after lunch, I'd first try changing this to a 3 block lunch and a 1 block afternoon snack.
Now I'll address the balance of the meals you posted. My suggestion would be to bring the unbalanced meals into balance. I'll point out the errors and you can click on the following link to use to make the appropriate corrections: http://www.drsears.com/drsearspages/foodblockguide.jsp[/color:7b2fa8117d]
8am breakfast:
3 pieces of turkey bacon
1/2c cottage cheese
1/2c blueberries
whole pear
9 cashews crushed & mixed in cottage cheese
This meal is a balanced 3 block meal. Note that with the block method every block of lowfat protein is asumed to contain at least 1.5 g fat. If you8 choose a fat free protein (ie, egg white, some deli meats, soy "meats", protein powder, fat free dairy) you need to add back this missing fat. Too little fat will not allow you to stay in the Zone. A little too much fat is fine, as it will enhance yoru ability to lower insulin. But more than a little too much will prevent you from burning stored fat. In the case of this breakfast, even if you've chosen a fat free cottage cheese, the additional fat in the bacon would make up for the missing fat in the cottage cheese. [/color:7b2fa8117d]
2:30pm Lunch
Romaine salad:
1/2c cottage cheese
1/2 avacado
7 to 8 cut baby carrots
tomatoe
redwine vinegarette for dressing (amt??)
This meal has 2P, about 1.5C, and 4 or 5 F (1T avocado is a block of fat). If your cottage cheese is fat free, then the aditional fat blocks you have are fine.[/color:7b2fa8117d]
4:30 5ish Snack:
Zone perfect bar
This is a two block snack, but I would consider it to be unfavorable. Many individuals find that Zone Perfect products do not allow them to keep their insulin levels within the Zone. These bars may be a contributing factor in regaard to your lack of progress. Dr. Sears is not afilliated with the Zone Perfect company, nor does he endorse their products. I suggest you either substitute real food, or use Omega Zone Bars, by Zone Labs. These were formulated by Barry Sears, and he holds a US patent on them in regard to their ability to control insulin levels within the Zone. For more info click on this link: http://www.zonelabsinc.com/servlet/coresysconfig.ZoneLabsComController[/color:7b2fa8117d]
7:30 8ish Dinner:
Salmon filet, Chicken breast, or ground turkey patty (3p)
1c squash, 1c zucchini steamed
1c strawberries
small romaine salad:
1/2 avacado
tomatoe
redwine vinegarette (amt??)
This is a 3 block meal, which has a little too much fat (at least 4 or 5 blocks in the avocado, plus whatever fat is in the dressing) and is missing some carb (needs another tomato to be 3 C).[/color:7b2fa8117d]
Bedtime snack 11-12ish:
1/3c applesause
slice of lowfat cheese

This would be a balanced one block snack as long as the slice of cheese is at least one ounce and contains at least 3g fat.
In addition, your meals and snacks contain have more carbs from fruit and the bar (total of 7 blocks in the day) than from low density veggies (total of 3 blocks in the day). This alone can keep you from experiencing results. To acheive insulin levels in the Zone, you'd want the opposite, most of your carbs from low density veggies. For a better idea, click on this link, taking note of all the veggies in the meals and snacks: http://www.drsears.com/drsearspages/toolsdayinzonepg.jsp
You haven't mentioned that you 're hungry, but if you are, let me know. We can adjust to eliminate it.
If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Let me know how you do with these suggestions. [/color:7b2fa8117d] |

egg and veggie fritatas
cooked barley (can spice it, flavor it, etc, jsust as with oatmeal)

Look for it in a health food sotre, or the health food section of your grocery store. It is not necessarily organic, but there is organic available. [/color:5470db829f] |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
