| before having my appendix removed in september, I was doing great with the zone. Then, I started dealing with favorable carbs. And I dont tolerate unfavorable carbs either. Now, I am off the Zone since then, and I have gained around 25 pounds of PURE fat and my mood is always down. It is very difficult for me to start up with the zone again and it's even harder to eat fav. carbs (which all must be derived from veggies). I am totally disapointed of me and I failed to accomplish the weight loss goals that I set. |

Dimitri,
You don't have to be so hard on yourself. Just pick it up and start from where you are. Why do you feel it is so difficult to start again? We all have our moments, believe me, I have had them, too.
Coming here for support is a good start. |

Dimitri, Pick yourself back up. Come up with a new, realistic goal for yourself. Remember, you're only one meal away from the Zone...start planning your next meals. Sorry to hear that your illness derailed your goal. May the new year be healthy for you & that you meet your goals. |

| I have an issue: I'm craving for sugar a lot and even when I add beans or lentils etc. for carbs it is too much (unflavored) food for me. I just cant pick myself back up. Any suggestions so as to improve the flavor of the carbs? thanks for your support!! |

How about spicing it up a bit? Even tossing in some cinnamon might help control insulin levels, and you may get the sense of a little sweet from it. Not sure what carbs you are eating, but there are lots of spice combinations that work nicely to enhance the taste of veggies. |

Dimitri, I'll bet that the sugar cravings will go away as you get back in to the zone. It may be difficult the first few days or week(s) depending on your body. If you had a food journal from when you were in the zone-- losing weight and feeling great go back and read it. Maybe even use tht as your personal "week in the zone" start up. If the sugar cravings are chocolate... try using some chocolate zone favorable things like my favorite slow cooked oatmeal with chocolate protein powder and crunchy peanut butter or chocolate fudge Sears zone bars, chocolate cherry muffins (recipe on this site). If you want some spice...how about making a big batch of zone friendly chili? A spicy chicken fajita salad? I've got a great fish recipe... white fish (cod, grouper, halibut) put on a large sheet of foil individual serving size; add chopped tomato, fresh cilantro, diced onion, diced jalapeno, capers, sprinkle chili powder, squeeze of lime, crimp up foil into a packet and bake for around 20 mins...depending on thickness of fish. serve with salad and garlic sauteed green beans (olive oil & garlic). Maybe adding some extra fat (nuts, olive oil or avacado) to your meals for a few days will help get rid of the cravings if your not feeling satisfied after meals. Don't forget to drink plenty of water as you start back in. |

dimitri, I hear you bcause I've had a lot of surgery, too. Dr. Sears explained some things to me which are related to your experience. Your body is is busy with healing after surgery, sometimes for many mos, even after you're feeling better. While it's healing , even though you are eating in the Zone (yes, I realize sometimes you're not, at the moment), the body will sometimes resist burning stored fat. The body is very smart. It tries to keep things as they are until it's completely healed. Best thing you can do is to eat in the Zone. Stick with it, and try not to become discouraged. If I remember correctly, you were kind of in a rut with uninteresting meals even before your surgery. My philosophy has always been to eat the fav C's I like best, and not bother with those I don't like. Then every meal and snack is delicious. Sauces are highly recommended to use in the Zone to add your fat and at the same time make veggies taste better. Try to stick with Zone meals the Zone lifestlye and not worry about fat loss in the short term post-surgery. Once your body recovers, it will begin to let go of the stored fat again. Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing. Best wishes for a good recovery with your next surgery, |

| Dr Sears said it best. Anytime you want, you can get back in the zone - all it takes is one meal and off you go. We took short breaks to enjoy xmas eve and day meals with families, trying to be prudent but not denying ourselves either. Next AM, back on the diet and we suffered minimal effects and continue to lose - wven when we don't, we know we can make small adjustments and get back in the Zone!! |

| I really apreciate your willing to spend some of your time answering back guys! I must say that I feel extremely terrible and unwilling to get back to the Zone. I can sa that I feel like having goosebumps only by thinking that I have to eat veggies again during the whole day, but you highlight sauces in your answers. Please, tell me how to prepare different kind of sauces and dressings (or toppings) favorable to the Zone. I only know how to prepare vinagrette. I'd really appreciate if you could e-mail me a couple of fav. sauces and recipes for veggies. Thanks a lot again and Happy New year!! |

dimitri,
Sounds like your frame of mind is getting in your way. Time for new start , my friend. Begin to think out of teh box, as the ssaying goes, Staret to experiment a little and see which fruits you can work in and still feel good. With your surgery coming up, base your Zone success on how you feel. You don't have to eat all veggies for C always , even with your C sensitivity issues. Half a block of friut, or even a couple slices of apple, a few cherries, etc will liven up meals and reduce the veggie volume at the same time. Remember to keep it simple.
I don't use sauces, other than tomato sauces or salsa from a jar, btu ther are sauce recipes to be found in the recipe section of this site. You just have to take a little time to look for them. Here's one I just found, a barbecue sauce: http://www.zoneliving.com/ZoneLiving/Recipes/RecipeArchive/tabid/92/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/16022/Chicken-Salad-with-Zoned-Barbecue-Sauce.aspx
Try adding seaeonings to yogurt, with a little water to thin it. you can also buy seasoning packets to add to vinagrette dresings or yogurt. The Zone book are a good source of recipes for sauces and dfresings, especially "Zone Meals in Seconds". |

Dimitri, here is a recipe for a mushroom sauce, and then an attached recipe to use the sauce with: Zoned Mushroom Sauce Ingredients: 3 cups strong beef stock 1/8 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce 4 1/2 cups mushrooms, sliced 1/2 teaspoon garlic, chopped 10 teaspoons cornstarch Salt and pepper to taste 1/8 teaspoon chili powder 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes 1 tablespoon red wine Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan to form a sauce. (Mix cornstarch with a little cold water to dissolve it before adding to saucepan.) Heat sauce to a light simmer, constantly stirring until mixture thickens. Transfer sauce mixture to a storage container, let cool and refrigerate.** *NOTE: Each cup of Zoned Mushroom Sauce contains no protein or fat. This recipe is used as a component of other Zone recipes. Mushroom Tenderloin With Artichoke Hearts Ingredients: 1/2 cup grapes 3 ounces beef tenderloin 1 1/2 cups onions, chopped 4 small artichoke hearts, diced* 1 teaspoon olive oil Instructions: In a nonstick saute pan saute add oil, onion, artichoke hearts, and beef. Cook until beef is done and vegetables are tender. Add 1 cup (1 carb) Zoned Mushroom Sauce (see attached recipe) and heat through. Place mixture on a large dinner plate and serve immediately. *Note: 3 small artichoke hearts equal 1 medium artichoke |

thanks Cranberry cat! I thought cornstarch counted as unfav. I've been using soy sauce a lot for broccoli and cauliflower. What about carrots? I heard they're fav. now. how much of raw and cooked carrots equals to 1 block? Thanks!! |

Yes, cornstarch is unfavorable. However, if you only use the sauce as a condiment, then you are really getting very little unfavorable carb (remember to keep unfavorable carbs to 25% or less of your zoned meal). Soy sauce is an excellent addition to broccoli and cauliflower. Carrots are favorable carb now. They were introduced as favorable in the publishing of "the Anti-Inflammation Zone". Carrots used to get a bad wrap, because of their higher glycemic index rating. But, after research done on the glycemic load, it was discovered that carrots have a low glycemic load. One cup of cooked carrots is equal to a zone block, and approximately one cup of raw is about the same, since carrots don't reduce in size very much during cooking. |
