In August I listened to a body builder friend of mine who does not zone in regard to me dropping more body fat and leaning out quicker than I had been poking along. Well, I dropped one C from each meal so I was consuming in a 3 block meal 3p,2c and I would sometimes be doubling fat if required ( egg whites etc....) and I also tried dropping all fat blocks every three days while adding extra sessions of HIIT ( high intensity interval training) and of course all my Carbs were fav. veggies only. Okay, are you with me? I spent four of the most horrible weeks trying to function! I was tired and hungry and irrational and bitchy and to top it all off the extra protien my friend recommended that I add also constipated me. Okay, in the end I gained four pounds, lost no inches and hormonally drove myself out of the zone so far that it took a few weeks to recover. I am back to my twelve even blocks a day, still cutting out friut except at breakfast and doing the paleo thing ( no grains,no dairy) and I have lost the four pounds and then some and inches and am human again. The moral is, dont cut yourself short thinking that it is going to help, I ended up two of those four horrible weeks just binging in the middle of the night because my body decided it had had enough torture.A whole jar of peanut butter and ice cream are not a good night snack! Be good to your body, dont give up on the zone and stay calm, plateaus will pass with a little extra cardio and more veggies than fruit.

Thanks for sharing Meredith! I have been having a hard time staying in the Zone and I keep thinking I need to change something around but maybe I just need to wait and let my body get use to the changes!

Carolyn and Christine,

Don't be afraid to adjust C and F according to Zone principles if you're hungry 4 hours (or less) after meals. Adjusting when needed, to lower you insulin to be able to maintain satiety for 4 hours after a meal, is of the utmost importance for remaining in the Zone. Some of the adjustments meredith used, such as eating extra protein and dropping all fat blocks while performing additional high intensity interval training, are different than those Barry Sears recommends for the Zone. They resulted in meredith eating a high protein low fat diet, one that no longer resembled the Zone and most likely put her into ketosis.

I don't think that meredith was suggesting not to follow the usual Zone adjustments that Barry Sears explains in his books when they're needed to keep you in the Zone (meredith, please correct me if I'm mistaken).

BTW, my Zone balance is to drop some carb (about a block) and also add a little extra monounsaturated fat (Barry Sears' classic Zone adjustments for the more carb sensitive person; in fact, he has personally worked with me for the last 9 years, to help me get the most from the Zone diet). A 3 block meal for me works out to be about 3P, 2C and 4 to 6 F, depending on the specific foods I include in the meal and my track record re how I respond to them. I've been very successfully using this adjustment to the Zone diet for almost 15 years.

Sue,

Thank you so much for the comment. I am hypoglycemic and have been struggling to keep my sugar from dropping. I have noticed that even when I balance out my meals, depending on what I use, sometimes they satisfy me for 4 hours and sometimes I am ready to eat everything after only 2. I am not sure if I am carb sensitive or if it is just the ingredients that are the culprit. I have not read the part in the book about modifying the ratio, I was trying to start from the front and just read but maybe I should skip ahead and read that section. I had planned on being done with it by now but as with all of us, life just gets so busy and hectic. Any ideas or suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated!

Here are the basics Carolyn. If 4 hours after a meal you are not hungry, have plenty of energy and good mental focus, then you're eating the appropriate balance for you. If you're hungry 4 hours after a meal, you judge the type of hunger you have, "focused hunger" or "unfocused hunger", to determine which adjustment you should make. Focused hunger means you are hungry, and have plenty of energy and good mental focus. Unfocused hunger means you are hungry with one or more hypoglycemic symptoms and/or have lack of good mental focus (I won’t go into the symptoms, since you already mentioned you experience hypoglycemic symptoms. The adjustment for focused hunger is to add 1 C block to each meal. The adjustment for unfocused hunger is to drop 1C block from each meal. If you are having unfocused hunger(is sounds like you are) in addition to dropping 1 C block at meals , it will also help to use berries for you fruit, to limit fruit to a block or two a day, and not to have too much higher density carb in a meal.

Fat is also important for maintaining steady blood sugar levels. Make sure you have at least the minimum amount of fat needed in your meals (refer to * at the end of this posting). If you still have difficulty after dropping a C block from meals, adding a little bit more monounsaturated fat to you meals will help, and will not be enough to interfere with the loss of excess stored body fat. Dietary fat helps to slow the entry of the carb you eat into your blood stream. Dr Sears' saying is 'it takes fat to burn fat'. You need to eat enough dietary fat to burn the stored body fat.

The Zone is not one size fits all. It's meant to be adjusted to suit your needs. The equally balanced block meal (such as 3P, 3C, 3F) is the starting point, appropriate for the average person. It represents a P/C of about .75. Note that in the first Zone book, ENTER THE ZONE, the acceptable P/C range for the Zone is from .6 to 1, which accounts encompasses both adding 1C block (a P/C close to .6) and dropping 1C block (a P/C close to 1).

If you adjust and still find you're getting hungry sometimes, I'll be happy to look at a sample day of your meals and snacks and make suggestions.

* Here’s how Dr. Sears explains fat blocks (taken from MASTERING THE ZONE, page 292 and 293).

“Why is a fat block only 1.5 grams?
Every block of low-fat protein contains approximately 1.5 grams of “hidden fat”. Therefore, by adding one extra fat block (which is defined as 1.5 grams of fat) for each block of low-fat protein, you are actually consuming 3 grams of fat or two blocks (one internal in the protein and one external) for each protein block. If you are using fat-free protein sources, such as isolated protein powders, then you should be adding two blocks of fat to achieve the same ratio. Obviously, if you are eating higher fat protein choices, you would not be adding any extra fat blocks to your meal. Remember that every time you add additional fat blocks to a meal, they should be composed primarily of monounsaturated fat.”
Common fat free proteins eaten on the Zone diet are egg whites, protein powder, some deli-style meats, and some soy products.

Hi, I also have hypoglycemia and have found out that some foods trigger it more than others. I am keeping a log of what food combinations keep me in the Zone and which ones cause hunger a few hours later. For instance, egg whites do not hold me, but a whole egg (although unfavorable) does the trick. Go figure. I am guessing that it is the extra fat in the yolk, so I tried additional olive oil with the egg whites to no avail - still hungrier than usual. I am continuing my experiment until I get it right with the good fats. I have also found that I stay in the Zone longer if I drink a full glass (not a cup) of water with each meal and snack. Another trick I use is if something is not working and I am a tad hungry before my next meal (which is happening less and less as I am figuring out what combinations work), I have just 1/4 of a Balance Bar, (they are 40/30/30) with a glass of water and I am great till my next meal. I did order the Zone Bars, but until they come, the Balance Bars are also good. I must be doing something right because I am down 8 lbs in 3 weeks, and that's pretty good for being 56! I am within my normal weight for my height, but at the higher end of my range, so I want to at least drop 10 more. Up at 5:00 am doing Pilates before work, and just started back on the Cardio thanks to the Zone.

Mari, good idea to keep a log. Also, try including fats other than olive oil with the egg white. It makes a big difference for me. Keep up the good work!

I agree that a food journal is the best tool for finding your personal 'Zone'. Track everything you consume (good and bad) and make note how you feel 4 hours after each meal. It's amazing how just one element of a meal can determine how well it works for you. Once you find your Zone you won't want to leave!

Carolyn, that is a very cute puppy!!

Mari – that is a great idea! I have been trying to keep a log of what I eat but I guess I was focusing on getting the correct number of blocks instead of how the different foods were affecting me. You are exactly right about the eggs, when I use just the whites it doesn’t hold me but whole scrambled eggs do. Have you found any good smoothie recipes that will hold you? I have tried a couple different kinds and they haven’t been doing the trick. It may be the protein powder that I was using. I purchased a better quality one yesterday so that may be why.

Jana – thanks! He is cute, and a good thing, 5 month old labs are a handful!! Your dog is beautiful!

Thank you Carolyn. That is my 11 year old Golden Retriever 'Logan'. He is such a sweetheart. My brother has a 1 year old chocolate lab so I know what you mean by being a handful! She is still very busy!! The two breeds are actually quite similar in nature and appearance (if you gave the golden a haircut).

The type of protein powder you are using can have a big impact on how well it works for you. Try to find one that has 21 grams of protein per scoop and that has very little additives to it (no sugar!). I love smoothies and have a lot of recipes....I think you posted that you used one of them in the accountability thread (PB&J Smoothie). Sue's Brownie Batter Smoothie is another really good one. You can find it in her recipe thread, page 1.

Yes, the type of protein powder can make a big difference. I've used a lot of different brands and types. At our house, we all prefer Dr. Sears Zone Protein Powder over the others we've tried. It tastes best to us, mixes in better than others and, most of all, we're able stay in the Zone longer between meals wiht it (probably because of the fact that it's designed to release more slowly into your system to last you more hours).

JARROW a vitamin/supplement company makes a protein powder that has no additives. There is an unflavored variety - what we use. So it mixes well in any recipe. I do not like the sweetness even if miniscule, of llavored varieties.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
