| Glad you feel better Jessi. Are you talking about Dr. Sears Zone bars from Zone Labs or the other bars sold in stores? |

| Had a great day today. Started with an hour walk before the rain began, and then had a renewing and energizing 1 hour yoga class. I finished today with a fast (15 min start to finish) easy and delicious dinner of Zone Fusilli tossed with sauteed zucchini, TJ's Roasted Garlic Chicken Sausage, Dr. Sears Zone Olive Oil, a little grated Parmesan cheese and some fresh ground black pepper. |

Thanks Jessie and Janet. Jessie - I'm glad you were able to rebound so quickly. Becky - Sometimes we slip. The key is not to beat yourself up about it and get back in the Zone as soon as possible. Hang in there. You've been doing great with your busy schedule. Meals/Snacks JUMP START 4:30 am 1C/1P/1F ½ cup probiotic yogurt. 2 cashews BREAKFAST 8:00 am 2C/2C/2F ½ bagel 2 turkey sausage patties 2 egg whites 3 almonds LUNCH 11:30 am 2C/3P/4F 1/2 cup chicken tortilla soup. It had a couple very small pieces of chicken (about 1/2 tablespoon)and the rest was some onion in broth. It was very bland. I was disappointed expecting something spicy. Salad with Romaine, Spinach, roma tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers red onions. About 4 cups total mostly lettuce and spinach. Maybe 2 tablespoons monterrey jack cheese. I didn't see much cheese in there. 3 oz fajita beef (I was suprised this seemed to be good lean beef (steak like) rather than cheap fatty skirt steak that most places use) 2 slices avocado 2 tablespoons Chipolte-lime dressing We had yet another lunch out today. Belated Boss Day and the Boss chose Mexican. Avoided the chips and salsa. This meal was probably light on the carbs and heavy on the fat due to the avocado, oil in cooking the fajita meat and dressing. The dressing wasn't creamy based, but probably had some oil in it. The salad was huge, but I doubt it was 3 carbs worth. I didn't feel like I wasn't in the Zone though, so that is good. All in all it was the best choice on the menu. SNACK 2:30pm 1C/1P/1F ½ cup peaches 1 oz jerky 6 peanuts I really had to force myself to eat this since I was so full from lunch, but I knew it would be at least 6:30 before I would eat supper and didn't want to wait that long to eat again, especially since my lunch was exactly balanced. DINNER 6:30pm 3C/3P/3F 1 cup shredded raw cabbage ¼ cup carrots ½ cup mixed fruit 3 oz chicken sausage 3 tsp smart balance mayo SNACK ready to go at 9:30pm 1C/1P/1F ½ orange 1 oz cheese 3 olives TOTALS 10C/11P/12F Not my best day, but certainly better than my pre-Zone days. In the words of Scarlett O'Hara... "Tomorrow is another day". |

| Jessi, thanks! I think things are settling down, I did bowl pretty well after all, and now I can finally go to bed! I was sitting here working on my cub scout sales, but it is time to get some shut-eye! |

Hi all,
Jessi -- I had a similar "crisis" yesterday afternoon -- had a snack that was missing protein, and was on the road so rushed over to Whole Foods, and picked up some tofu from their hot bar to wolf down about 2 oz to balance out. It was actually disgusting -- "Buffalo Garlic Tofu" -- but didn't want to risk going out of the Zone!
Also, I know what you mean about the Zone bars -- the Dr. Sears Zone bars are so delicious, that even though I plan 1/2 bar for a snack, I want more! It's not hunger, and not really an out-of-Zone craving, but more like I just want to eat more because I like the taste so much. Just this morning, I gave in and had a full bar even though I had planned to have only 1/2. I find it helps if I tell myself to wait 30 minutes -- if I STILL want the other half, I can have it. But often, the urge passes by then.
Sue -- as always, thanks for posting your meals -- great ideas and inspiration!
Deborah -- I'm so impressed with how well you work the Zone into your day -- you're so great at planning, but you're just as good with dealing with those "curve balls" -- eating out, etc.
Cranberry -- for the longest time, I'd been going on 3-4 hours of sleep a night -- lately, I've been forcing myself to get 7 hours, and it has FINALLY gotten me into the Zone. For me, even if I eat perfectly favorable/balanced foods, if I don't get enough sleep, I can't get into the Zone. Not to mention, getting to bed at a reasonable hour gets me out of the kitchen and away from the risk of overeating when I'm tired and my resistance is low :-) .
Have a great day all!

| Sue -- ha! It really did seem like I was taking my "medication" (to Dr. Sears' point that what we eat, and when we eat is akin to taking the proper dosage at the right time.) |

Hi everyone!
I've had a busy few days, but happily zoning! I had lunch out with a friend yesterday and did have a little toast with my spinach and feta omelet but I felt better after my afternoon snack....I almost appreciate that my body does that to me to remind me that eating out of the zone just doesn't work for me.
Sue...welcome back! Now its count-down to Christmas holidays! ;-)
Janet...it took me the longest time to find mac butter too. Boy, it was worth the search! I just love it
Jessi...glad you like the PB&J smoothie...it is a favourite here. Even the 'non-zoners' ask me to make it for them!
Deb...excellent job with the Chinese and Mexican. You are officially a true Zoner! And congratulations on your loss, 32 lbs is something to be proud of for sure! Did you hear that the Leafs actually won the other night? Of course that's the first game I didn't watch LOL!!! I enjoy some popcorn on occassion too and it doesn't seem to take me out of the zone or cause weight gain either...its nice when we can enjoy some 'unfavourables' without penalty isn't it? I like to think its because we are so good otherwise!!
thanks for asking about Logan...he is doing sooo much better! I have to take him to the vet later this aft for a checkup. At the last checkup (almost 2 weeks ago) the vet was thrilled with his improvement (jaunce was gone, liver didn't feel swollen and he gained back 2 of the 8 lbs he had lost) so we've just continued with the medications and limiting his food to only the vet food (no treats or table scraps, etc) over the past 2 weeks so hopefully he checks out even better today. Boy, he really gave us a scare...we all thought it was the end (even the vet thought the time was near). We've been enjoying him even more since he got sick, so grateful for the extra time we are getting with a most lovable soul....
Becky...great job zoning with the extra job too!

I am feeling great on the zone. Started 10/12/09=254, 10/23/00=247, 10/28 = 245 I got a question for you all..... I donated blood yesterday and was advised not to do my normal 1 1/2 hour work out at the gym for that day. I plan on going back to the gym today. Is there anything special I would need to do on the Zone for today or the next couple of days. Thanks Jerry |

Hello, hello! Hope everyone is having a good day! It is nice to know we are on the downhill side of the week too isn't it!?!
Sue- LOL @ don't eat disgusting food! I have actually had both, the Dr. Sears bars and the other bars. Both make me want to overeat, however the Dr. Sears bar did keep me in the zone... The yoga classes you always take sounds awesome! I love yoga, at the end of the class do they ever have you lay down with a lavendar pillow over your eyes? The class I used to take before we moved here a couple of mths ago would always do that. Ahhh it was like heaven after working out! I really need to find a good gym to call home up here!
Cran- How was your day today? Hopefully less hectic! You sure are one busy bee, good thing you have the zone to give you so much energy!!!
Laurie- It sounds like we have a lot of the same eating habits. Pretty much everything you write makes a lot of since to me. Good tip too about waiting 1/2 hr. I'm going to use that, it is a good mentality to have! I actually did kind of the same thing the other day, had to go into Panera Bread (my all time fav) for business and almost broke down and got a bagel or a soup bread bowl. I told myself, if I really want it I should plan it and it shouldn't be an impulse. I can come back tomorrow if I still want it... Didn't go back. Actually I forgot about it till just now when your comment sparked my memory. I feel like for this to really be a long term way of life I will not be able to cut out the unfav carbs forever, nor would I really want to. However, the trips to places like Panera should be few and far between and not an every week indulgence. Plus I like the idea of planning for it and being in control.
Jerry- I don't think I have said hi and welcome yet. So hi! Wow, congrats w/ the weight loss! I'm not even going to attempt to answer your question b/c I have only been zoning for about a month and a half now, but I'm sure the nurse knows best. So as long as you follow his/her advice you should be fine.
Today- another great zone day, LOVE it! b 7:45am 3blks berry/p powder/milk smoothie w/ almond slivers on top.
coffee
l 1pm- 2 blks, no time to eat the 3rd cottage cheese apple mac nuts
s 4:45 1blk fruit cocktail lf cheese
dinner and other snack? I did get that soyrizo or however you spell it, may try to do something Mexican with that. Or possibly the marinated chicken I picked up the other day and some veggies. Who knows, I'll figure it out in about another 1/2 hr. |

hmmm, Jerry, sorry I have no answer for ya.... well, I am enjoying the downward slide of th scale now.....seems like I have gottn into the zone at last.... dinner will be ground turkey marinara with -rice pasta (we can't eat wheat) for the others- and I'll have it over broccoli! Laurie, I have to laugh...the "buffalo" tofu! That buffalo wings thing isn't all that good either. unless you're drinking beer! (which I love but cannot drink a bit....or bloat) |

Yes Sue! Exactly!
Dinner turned out to be very tasty w/ the Trader Joe's sun dried tom. chicken breast, a very large salad w/ pear vinagarete and mixed veggies w/ a little bit of pasta sauce on top. Actually if I'm going to be honest it was vodka sauce, the fiance was having penne alla vodka and I had to have a bit of the sauce.
P.M. Snack was a cubed chicken leftovers from dinner, apple cubes, grape 1/2 and lt mayo mixed together. I guess kind of like a little chicken salad.
There is not going to be any way for me to post my food diary tomorrow. I will be working for 11 1/2 hrs. and will have to eat out for dinner b/c I will not be home and I will not have access to a fridge to keep a packed dinner. I am already trying to plan and I'm thinking I could either get a Wendy's chili b/c I know that it is a balanced 3 block meal or I could go to subway and get one of their salads w/ lots of veggies on top. I'm thinking I will prob. do that b/c it will be more filling and I feel that I will be able to have more control over the food I will eat. However I have no idea what to do about dressing, and I really like to have at least a little drizzle over a salad. If anyone has a suggestion on this please let me know. Ugh, wish me luck this will be the first time I have eaten away from home in 5 almost 6 weeks... |

Work has been keeping me super busy lately. Sometimes I can't believe I even took a 2nd job. Am I nuts or what? But I need to pay off that darned loan, sooner rather than later. I've been sticking to my Zoned shakes for dinners on my work nights. That seems to really work out well. I generally either do 2 cups of raspberries, 2 cups of strawberries, or a combination of the two, plus milk and Zone protein powder, and a big plop of some kind of nut butter. Here's my Zone for today.
Breakfast: Cottage Cheese and fruit
Lunch: Turkey meatballs with leeks, celery, cherry tomatoes, green beans, and raspberries for desert.
Snack 1: Smoked turkey, cucumbers and hummus.
Dinner: Strawberry shake w/ 2 cups of strawberries, 1 cup of skim milk, 2 scoops of Zone protein powder, 1 TBS of raw almond butter, 1 tsp of raw cocoa powder.
S2: 1 cup of Soy Slender soy milk, 1/3 cup of applesauce.
I wanted to share with you guys something I found. I found these individual packets of guacamole. They sell them for 6 in a pack, but they are 8g of fat each. The company name is Wholly Guacamole. I'm way to lazy to make my own guacamole, so these are so perfect.
Also I had a question. Does anyone know if smoked turkey is just as favorable as regular turkey? All the employees in my company may be getting smoked turkeys for Christmas this year.
Happy Zoning! |

Nice new pic Sue! your dinner last night with the pasta and apple slices sounds good.
Deb...did you watch the game? Congratulations on the win! I only watched to the end of the second and they were tied at that point...couldn't stay awake, fighting the flu that the kids have brought home...but TSN tells me this morning that the Stars won. It was a good game for the 1st 2 periods that I watched. And I LOVE the term 'furbabies'..very cute!!!
Jessi...I love Subway salads. This info may be too late for you to use today but I like the seafood or tuna salad and get lots of veggies, usually skip the cheese as its full fat and there is plenty of protein in the meat. For dressing they have 'Renee's Spring Herb Italian Vinegrette' here which is low fat and very tasty. If they don't have something like that there ask if they have oil and vinegar in a squirt bottle (for putting on subs) and just ask them to put it on sparingly or you'll have too much fat. Enjoy!
Becky...good for you for taking on the second job. I recall Sue mentioning Wholly Guacamole in the past as well...the individual packets are a great idea! I would think the smoked turkey would be fine, but Sue will likely comment on that.
Yesterday's zone: Breakfast: Janet's Super Yummy Smoothie Lunch: Taco Salad (my fav!) Snack: 1/2 Zone bar Dinner: 3oz ex lean ground beef, slice of nf cheese, 1/2 hamburger bun, pickles, large greek salad Snack: applesauce, protein powder, mac butter

Well, I had to go back a few posts to catch up! So, it has been busy at work this week. I guess that I didn't realize on Tuesday how busy it was going to be, but we have been running nonstop. Other than that, it was a bit less busy at home. Confirmation class was canceled and so Brittany and I decided to take advantage of the extra time and go shopping. Tonight I didn't have any special commitments, and just looking forward to finishing out the week and getting started with the weekend. Sleep! I need some of that! |

Happy Friday!
I had a pretty good zone day yesterday, considering that I'm fending off the flu. Everyone in the house has been sick with it with the exception of one son. Thank goodness I've been taking care of myself (via the Zone!) so it hasn't hit me full force like it did everyone else. Keeping my fingers crossed that is doesn't get any worse.
Last night I was stumped as to what to do with some fresh chicken breasts for supper. I was in an odd mood and tired of all the 'usual' recipes....I just started throwing things together and ended up with quite a tasty dinner.
Mexican Chicken & Black Beans I started with putting the chicken in a fry pan with some olive oil, then sprinkled both sides of the breasts with Taco seasoning. I cooked it until it was almost done (approx 10-12 minutes) then I added 1/4c black beans to the top of each breast and put a sprinkle of low fat tex-mex cheese on top to hold the beans to the chicken. I served mine with a side of salsa (1/4cup). I would have put the salsa right in the pan but no one else cares for it. Added a side of asparagus and had a small plum for dessert. I've made a similar recipe in the oven before (without the beans) but the frying in the taco seasoning and olive oil gave it a nice twist and it was much quicker.
Have a great weekend everyone! |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.
8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil

- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
