Hi there,
I'm Anna. I just had my 2nd baby in August and I'm really having a hard time losing weight. I never lost it from the first one. I'm 5 foot 5 and 225 pounds. Prior to the kids, I'd always been 140. Is it even possible to get back to that?! And, is it possible to lose this stomach?! My problem with the zone is trying to fix myself that while fixing my husband the huge amounts of food he likes. Also, for my 18 month old...is it good to have a baby on the zone? I'm glad to have met up with this site and all those other struggling out there. I am a social person and need a lot of encouragement and support with this!
Cheers!

You're welcome Lorie!

Your carb hangover this week is reinforcing the Zone principles you've been learning about how powerful food can be. Do the best you can and keep at it. One day at a time, and you'll get there. Try not to let other's opinions get in your way. There are many people who don't realize how much impact diet has. :-)

Hi Lorie

Your carb hangover would be more from the pasta you put your homemade spagetti sauce over rather than the sauce itself. Next time try making a different 'base' for your sauce...I like spagetti squash. or you could use steamed cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, or bean sprouts. Also, Dreamfield's pasta has a much lower carb count than other pastas although it is still unfavourable.

I agree with Sue, try not to let others opinions get in your way. If you feel good and have more energy eating in the Zone the people close to you will see this and be more supportive as time goes on. Food is very powerful!

Welcome Anna!

YES it is possible to get back to your pre-baby weight! It will take some time as the Zone is not a quick weight loss plan but it DOES work and if you stay in the Zone the weight does stay off. The best part of the Zone is how good you feel...lots of energy and an overall healthy feeling.

I have a large family and no one else is really eating in the Zone except for me (my DD tries on occasion) so what I do so I don't feel I'm making multiple meals is I choose a Zone protein and a veggie dish that I make for everyone then I make a non-Zone side dish such as pasta, potatoes or rice for the rest of the family that I just don't eat. Once you are in the Zone you don't miss these foods and it is surprisingly easy to just not eat it.

You will be doing your children a huge favour if you teach them how to eat in the Zone while they are small. I wish I had known about the Zone years ago when my kids were small...now they feel a meal isn't complete without that unfavourable side dish. If you feed your children in the zone from when they are babies they won't know any different and will be much better off for it as they get older.

Good luck with it Anna

Hey Anna, how is it going for you??

Not too sure about babies on the zone but other people here have alreday came up with answers.. For your husband, I would just keep cooking protein and vegetables for you and baby and husband and bad carbs and fat for him if this is what he wants.. like more cheese and sauces and potatoes and pasta.. But just make enough for him... So you cannot be tempted.. Anyway, that is what I am doing with my man... I think they end up eating a bit more like us without seeing it happenning too fast... Doe it make sens??

I was thinking that my weight was the exact same as yours a year ago (well, one pounds heavier 226 lbs and I am also 5'5" but unfortunatly I don't have any kids yet)... Now I am about 182-185 lbs, and I will be going on the scale after the 14 initial days back on the zone. I started again more stricltly at 11 blocks daily on october 30th (I don't exercise anymore so that is why I keep it at 11 blocks like they suggested me). I am planning to exercise again later, I will start with walking but not now (I use to be at 13 blocks daily about 6-8 years ago but that was in my crazy fitness days).. I know I just started again but I really want it to happen for me this time.. And I want it to be a way of living...

I would also like to get pregnant sometimes in the following 6-12 months, I find this a little scary too.. and I would like to loose some weight before.. I am 34 years old and I am getting old!! My man is younger, lucky me he is 30! I have to keep up with him!! But it might be reversed with the side effects of the zone!

If you want, Maybe we could loose it together, like 20 pounds.. Then I would probably, if everything is in order for me, get pregnant and we could weight the same weight for a little while Then me going up in pounds a healthy way living the zone and you still going down in pounds in a healthy way living the zone too! But we could meet in the middle and be pregnant together and same weight if you want a third one hehe

I know you can do it! We feel so much better with the zone and we have so much support here.. I am looking forward to see how it is going for you! Have a great day!

p.s. I think I just have asked you to be my weight loss buddy and I am kind of shy about it! Like a little girl in kindergarten school!?

Thanks ya'll, I pretty much zoned all weekend, shy of a piece of buttermilk pie Saturday nite. I had a zone dinner of baked chicken and black bean salsa with lots of avocado. So bood sugars pretty well stayed on an even level. Everybody likes the big Brain Shake in the Anti-inflammation Zone book. Yea! I planned our weeks worth of meals. All of family meals are zone friendly except kids lunches and husbands breakfast and snacks. Say a prayer for me. Maybe my family will feel the difference themselves.

Use the Zone block calculator (link on the top right). As a woman, you probably will be needing 11 blocks a day (depending on your activity level). This fixes amount of protein you must eat a day (not lett, not more) and accompany it with the fats and carbs. It is important not to reduce calories just because you think it is a lot of food. This is a fairly low-cal diet but the most important difference between this diet and any other diet (apart from the fact that it works :-) ) is that you have to balance each meal i.e each meal has to have right number of blocks of each type. You cannot "save" blocks for the next time or next day. Every meal needs to be more or less very well composed - otherwise you won;t be "in the Zone" and will not see the benefits immediately.

But how does it work in the number of grams per day? I heard from someone that it should be around 20g per day?

no!! You'd be starving yourself and definitely you will not be in the Zone. You need around 27g of low-insulin stimulating carbs per MEAL. And you need to have 3 full meals a day + 2 snacks (9 g of carbs per snack). Examples of good carbs are: berries, steel cut oats, veggies etc. Unfavourable carbs are breads, other grains, rice, pasta, potato etc. To be in the Zone you have to also eat 21 g of protein (lean or no-fat) per MEAL and around 9g of fats (some of fat is already in the protein choice). Good protein choices are e.g. fish, lean turkey breast, lean mince beef, cottage cheese. Good fats are e.g. olive oil, avocado, almonds. Have a look at the Quick Start Guide section (link on the top right)

Lorie: I gave my cat away to a very good family because I was getting tired... My bf wanted us to keep it but I didn't.. Well the cat is in very good hands, I could not hope for a better family than that... Today I kept thinking about the cat... I miss him and I sometimes regret my decision.. I come here to check post and first thing I see is your cat and he is the same as the one we had.. Strange.. Don't give him up!!!

Christine I am so sorry about your cat. I understand how you feel...I had to give away a Chocolate Lab once when my daughter started crawling. He was an inside dog all 95 pounds of him and a complete mess. The movie "Marley & Me" could have been written about him. LOL I just also remember he is witha good family now who has the time to love him and give him the training he needs.

Cheetah is a female bengal that I rescued from a breeding mill. When she could no longer have babies she was outside in a large cage. Winters get pretty cold in our area. Her life is now eating, sleeping on a warm blanket, and curling up in our lap to be petted.

Hi Jana <img src='http://www.zonediet.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>
Thanks for the encouragement and advice! I'm just going to have to put a lot of work into this...at least at first, but it is well worth it!
How many blocks of protein do you think an 18 month old should have?
Thanks,
Anna

Hi Christine!
I only just joined this last week, so I haven't gotten on to see if people have responded really, so sorry this is a bit late. But, YES, I'd love to be your weight loss buddy!
One thing really quick...just a little advice...when you do get pregnant...whatever you do...do NOT overeat (the whole..."i'm eating for two" thing) and EXERCISE! Even if you do not feel like, get out and walk. Like I said, I weighed 140. I wasn't even really sick at all with my first pregnancy, I just got lazy..."oh well....I'm tired, I'll just take it easy" and before you knew it...BAM. And it is HARD to lose!
I do see what you're saying about the family sort of just tending to eat more like I do; that will be nice! That's so funny...my husband is younger too! I'm 30 and he's 28.
My goal (may be farfetched, but I still like the idea) is to be down to at least 150 by 4th of July.
I don't know about you, but I have to set short goals throughout...like, Thanksgiving, then Xmas, then Feb, etc, etc...
We should start our own thread, just for us...lol! That way we can more easily find each other's posts.
Okay, so I'm ready. Let's go. 20 pounds by when?
Cheers,
Anna

Hi Anna!

You're welcome! I know how overwhelming changes can be with little ones in the house! Being in the Zone will not feel like a lot of work once you get into it....and you are right it is worth it!!!

I wouldn't worry about counting blocks for an 18 month old. I would just offer balanced food and let them eat as much as they would like....so for example a couple of ounces of diced chicken breast and some veggies like green beans or broccoli followed up with some strawberries dipped into natural peanut butter for desert. If the child is still hungry then give a few more pieces of chicken and veggies/fruit etc. They cannot eat too much, you just need to make sure they get enough so they are not hungry again before snack-time.

It will be much easier if I can just let him eat the amount that he wants...I was having a hard time imagining having to count blocks for him. lol. Okay, well, have a great day!

Hi Anna!

I had meant to reply to your 10-29 posting here sooner; sorry it's taken me so long! You can do it, maybe not 75 lbs by July 4th (that's a little ambitious for the Zone diet), but you can do it! I asy teh becasue I did it. I lost 100 pounds when I started the Zone almost 15 years ago and I've maintained the fat loss. I went from a size 22 pants to a size 8, sometimes evn a six (that pants size was like a foreign language to me!). The Zone has completely changed my life for the better in many ways. (A million thanks to you, Barry Sears!)

I just posted to Kristie in another forum here including a lot of addresses of postings here where you can read about my Zone experiences. Here's the address to that post: http://www.zonediet.com/Community/Forums/tabid/121/view/topic/postid/49484/forumid/4/tpage/1/Default.aspx#49646

As for your kids, yes, you can encourage a Zone diet from the start by feeding them the most Zone friendly foods. My daughter's doing this with my little grandson (the baby in my avatar pix). His first birthday was 2 weeks ago, and he was exclusively breastfed until she slowly began introducing solids around 6-8 mos. At first she mashed a lot of it with a baby food mill, an a little hand blender, and quickly progressed to more solid forms as he was able to grasp things and begin to feed himself. Of course she's also followed the usual precautions for foods not to be fed to younger infants and toddlers. His diet and huge appetite is making his Zoned grandma proud. :-) He loves a large variety fo foods already, from all kinds of veggies to berries, black beans, lentils, apples, avocadoes, pears, guacamole, chicken, salmon, you name it! She's feeding him very little grain, limited to just a few pieces of the Cherrio type from Trader Joe's now and then and a little Zone pasta sometimes (he has fun picking these up).

Here's a posting of mine about gradually switching the whole family to the Zone:

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs products are three times fresher than the minimum allowed by the Norwegian Medicinal Standard and European Pharmacopoeia Standards (based on average peroxide values).

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.

8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured

Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.

  1. Extraction of fish oil
  2. Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
  3. Absorption – remove heavy metals
  4. Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
  5. Oil conversion to ethyl esters
  6. Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
  7. True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
  8. Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating

Clean Sources

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
