Are you carb sensitive, or wondering if you are, or even wondering what that really means? I thought it would be great to start this thread to give us a place to discuss it. I'm very carb sensitive. In my case the symptoms presented as cravings, severe hypoglycemic symptoms, uncomfortable bloating and steady weight gain over the years. For me it means that I must take care to eat lower glycemic load meals and snacks, and always eat some protein and monounsaturated fat along with carb foods, so that I maintain a steady blood sugar level without big spikes and drops. I've been managing very well by eating the Zone diet for the past 15 years. It's fantastic to finally be free of the vicious cycle of blood sugar spikes and hypoglycemic symptoms all day long. I feel great and have tons of energy. The cravings I had my whole life are a thing of the past. Another huge plus, as a result of eating the lower glycemic load meals of the Zone I lost 100 pounds and I've maintained that loss. Specifically in relation to my Zone meals and snacks, being carb sensitive means a couple of things. First, I have adjusted my balance to allow myself to be able to maintain satiety (lack of hunger) for 4 to 6 hours after meals. For some meals and snacks I can still maintain an equal balance of protein, carb and fat, for others I need an equal balance of protein and carb with increased fat, but for most I have to drop some carb and add a little extra monounsaturated fat. It all depends on the combination of foods. Second, I have to choose my carb foods very carefully, and include lots of veggies in my day. Even when it comes to some of the favorable carbs, I need to limit the amount of certain foods I eat in any one meal or they'll take me out of the Zone. Many of these are fruits (peaches, plums, kiwi, grapes, and more). To a lesser degree, I also have to limit my use of lentils and steel cut oatmeal. Over time, and with a lot of trial and error, I've found that some varieties of particular fruits work well while others don't work for me at all, especially when it comes to varieties of plums, apples and grapes. The same goes for some brands of frozen fruits vs. others. Is there anyone else here who's carb sensitive? (I think I already know the answer to that!) How have you adjusted your meals to deal with it? |

I was diagnosed as hypoglycemic about 5 years ago, and told to "stay away from sugar, and try to lose weight" Not a lot of solid advice to follow. I cut back on sugar.....like candy bars and sodas and desserts and started drinking diet soda. I never knew about all the hidden sugars in stuff. Now that I am on the Zone, for about a month now, I definitely believe I am extremely carb sensitive. I feel so much better now that I am eating only favorable carbs. I have cut out all diet drinks too. I am going to read Mastering the Zone, because I think I might benefit from more fat/protein and less carb. |

Glad you're feeling so much better! Keep listening to what your body tells you. A tip, in the Zone you shouldn't eat more protein daily than your LBM and activity level dictate (using the Zone calculator). If you're getting hungry by 4 hours after a meal (or less), and it is unfocused hunger (hunger accompanied by hypoglycemic symptoms), then you would drop 1C block from each meal. A couple extra blocks of monounsaturated fat, as you mentioned, can help eliminate the hunger in addition to dropping the carb, but be careful to keep extra fat blocks minimal. Too many and your body will have no need to tap into it's stored fat. Keep us updated! |

Hi, Sue ~ Your description seems VERY familiar to me! Nice to have a "name" for it...mostly I find I HAVE to eat enough carbs to feel energy & sometimes get to that shaky place if I don't. Are headaches a part of this, do you think? Years ago, I was told by a surgeon that in any given 2 hour period, my blood sugar can fluctuate from hypoglycemia to diabetic values. Makes it tricky to know what's what. Problem: due to many factors which can be summarized into "finances" & "discouragement", I gave up on the Zone for a while......after several weeks strictly adhering to the Zone diet, I wasn't losing any weight (which I very much need to do!) but I felt great! However, since I haven't been following Zone rules for the last month, I feel lackluster, tired, grumpy and have definitely gained weight. Today, for the first time in weeks, I looked at the Zone Community...and found your post re Carb Sensitivity. So, now I need to start all over again, I guess. L. |

Hi Lynne!
Headaches can be a hypoglycemic symptom or something else. Always check with you doctor when you have recurring symptoms.
Atip, or you might say an observation of mine, those zoners who focus on maintaining the best insulin control and lowering inflammation have excellent weight loss results.
Here's to a great start (restart)! Welcome back and keep us updated! |

Thanks, sue ~ I'm pretty careful to test/insulin about three-four times a day. Usually it's in the "ok" range. Important because I'm hyper-sensitive to many meds (including diabetic meds in the past....went through a bout several years ago re: "borderline" redings & doctor thought it best to take meds as prevention...also considering family history. Found out quickly that that just doesn't work. Since then, I've become more & more reactionary to taking ANY med unless it's truly necessary. so the deal is...I stay off diabetic meds ( which also tend to throw me right into hypoglycemia!) IF I can maintain reasonable blood-sugar readings.) HOwever, my "symptoms" don't to seem to make medical "sense"...but I'm sure that what I feel is directly related to food/eating patterns: just don't quite know how to find the support I need to discover exactly what it is I have to do! Lynne, I think you're confusing insulin with blood sugar. They are two very different things. Insulin levels cannot be determined from blood sugar results. Insulin levels are determined with blood test done by a lab (Fasting Insulin Blood Test). By reading a Zone book, you can learn how to control your blood sugar in a manner that allows your insulin level to lower to the levels of the Zone. If you have questions, I'll be happy to try to help. |

| Lynne- Don't beat yourself up about the past. Start where you are right now, and just move forward one meal at a time. I started the Zone on 9/11/09 and since then have lost very little weight (by the scale numbers, 0 for the first 2.5 weeks, but about 3 lbs this past week). But my lean body mass has increased by 8 lbs and my fat weight (using the Zone calculator) has decreased by 18 lbs. My body fat has gone from 59% to 54%. Whats more, I don't feel like I'm gonna die without a nap at 3 oclock each day! It takes some time for you to find your zone, and for your body to adjust to the changes you are making. Try to take just one meal at a time, balance that meal, and then balance the next meal or snack, and then the next, and eventually everything else will catch up and you will see results. In the meantime, forget about the scale and just focus on making your next meal or snack zone balanced. |

Honestly, I would have to admit that I get confused about carb sensitivity. I have difficulty reading it, personally. My responses vary, and early on in my zoning days, I was confused about it. First of all, I have had difficulty in getting sustained satiety 4 horus after a meal. I would not have the traditional signs of carb sensitivity, just the early hunger and it could go on to develop into a feeling of hypoglycemia with some inability to concentrate on my tasks due to the hunger--but still very alert. I do develop the mental fogginess, but I normally only get this reaction if I eat unfavorable carbs. Anyway, in the early days, I was mistaking my lack of fogginess and trying to adjust by adding carb. Wasn't working. Dropped a block of carb, and added the extra fat. This did seem to help some, but I do still struggle with meal satiety. I would end up having to add a TON of fat in order to get adequate meal satiety, and then I have too many calories to be able to lose fat. I also feel that my carb reactions are very unique because I tend to struggle more with meal satiety when I go with the lower density carbs. If my meal is all low density carbs, I have a lot of difficulty finishing the meal due to volume, but at the same time I can be hungry in 3 hours. So, again, it seems to work out better with more fat, but at the expense of having too much fat which is contributing calories. So, my adjustment is that I feel I do best with a mixed variety of densities. 1-2 blocks of low denisty and mix in 1/2-1 block of a moderate density carb. But, my meal satiety is still right around 4 hours, it is rare for me to go longer than 4 1/2 hours on a meal. |

Hi
I am new here and have only been on the zone for a week.I believe that I may be carb sensitive just for the fact that I have dieted using the calorie in/calorie out rule accounting for every morsel of food and adding in any exercise and I have not lost weight. I decided to give zone a try after 8 months of working out 5 days a week and still not losing weight. Well, after one week the scale went down 4 lbs. I did have a few days probably three days in where I felt kind of foggy and low energy but assume it was body's response lowering carbs. So, I am assuming that the reason I couldn't lose weight was because I have a carb sensitivity. |

| I don't appear to get hungry, unless I way overdo it, nor foggy - just seem to gain weight easily with additional carbs, like a meal out that I am not careful about Zoning - and sometimes do not Zone, and simply enjoy, about twice per month. Or if I have a full bottle of beer. I know because at one point I wnted to unscientifically determine - so i weighed myself every morning at same time, under same conditions, for a few weeks, with varying degrees of strict and loose Zoning. Everyone is different... |

I am so happy to find this topic about carb sensitivity! I was diagnosed hypoglycemic a few weeks ago and have been struggling to keep my sugar levels from dropping. My doctor recommended I try the Zone diet. I have been really struggling with my weight for some time and it seemed like no matter what I did I would not loose. Then about 2 months ago I started to gain and really started to feel like crap all the time……I didn’t have the motivation to do anything!
This is only my second day so I am still learning and unsure of many things. But I can say that yesterday, my first day on the Zone diet, was the first time in a long time that I was not starving after 2-3 hours! I actually worked out and felt pretty good! I am very excited about this and eager to continue. I read the first book, Enter the Zone and I also have Mastering the Zone and a Week in the Zone. They seem to contradict each other as far as the food plans go. Does anyone have a suggestion of which book is the best to follow?
Thanks a bunch!

Welcome Carolyn!
Read TOXIC FAT. I highly recpmmend it. It's Dr. Sears newest book (came out last yr). It ties the whole picture of the Zone together, presenting the entire history of the Zone from it's inception (Dr. Sears initial work with dliabetic and athltes, and the books you've mentioned) to the most up-to-date info about the fat trap and silent inflammaiton. It explains how to eat in the Zone to best deal with your body's specific genetic progrmming. |

Hey Sue! I have been playing around as of late with my blocks. For example this week I tried dropping a carb block at my main meals (Breakfast, Lunch,& dinner) and adding an extra mono fat…keeping my snacks at regular block style…FEEL GREAT! I think it has made a huge difference on how I feel. My energy levels have been much better. I also feel I can go longer between meals not feeling hungry. My stomach has also gotten much flatter. My questions is I’m sort of feeling uncreative with my meals. I don’t want to rely too much on “man made” carbs, but rather veggies. For example, two tomatoes equal 1 carb block..so trying to use techniques like this to bulk up my meals. Have some ideas for me? I’m not much of a cook.

1/4 cup of black beans is 1 fav carb block. And you can do a lot with them. Cold - add them to a salad: Warm - add a little seasoning and EVOO, etc. |

I use black beans and garbanzo beans, too. I keep pre-cooked chix breast on hand, then it is ready to toss into any meal on short order. Today, I cooked up my lunch in about 5 minutes. I only had to saute some onion, then just tossed in the beans and some fresh tomatoes (and the chicken, of course). It was delish! |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
