Here's my food and exercise diary from today, a very difficult day, yet also a nice day in a way. There was a very painfully empty spot at my right in yoga class this morning, where my dear friend Ruth was just a week ago today, an hour before she passed away. My lunch was with the "girls", not the yoga girls, but two long-time friends. We've been friends since Kindergarten and 1st grade, over 50 years (wow, that makes me sound old!). :-) The husband of one of them very recently passed away after 10 months of battling pancreatic cancer (he was my age...). My friend Ruth's wake was later this afternoon, which I attended with my yoga friends. Thank goodness for good friends. Like I said, a tough day, but a nice day, too. I stayed in the Zone easily.

Tu. 10.06.09

B: Sue’s Brownie Batter Smoothie. SHP and supplements. 3P/2C/6F

S: ½ Sweet and Salty Nut Crunch Dr. S. Zone bar. 1/1/1

Sue- I cried when I read your story. Wow! So impressive. You go girl. Thank you for sharing that.

Laurie- Thanks for the medizone info and the book info. Haven't had a chance to look into the book website yet, but I'll get around to it soon. I tried reducing my carbs a bit today, and experimenting with my food for a little more variety. The calculator says I need 14 blocks, which seems outrageous to me. I'd be happier, mentally with 8 (meaning I would feel less guilty, more like I wasn't overeating, etc).

Snack 5am:
1 c 1% milk
1 FF mozzerella cheese stick
1P/1C/0F

Breakfast 8:30 am
1/2 c eggbeaters, microwaved
1 peach
12 cashew halves
2P/1C/3F

lunch 12:30
3 oz sardines
1 peach
1c strawberries
12 cashew halves
1/2 c FF ice cream
3P/4C/3F

Supper 6:30
salad composed of:
1c raspberries
1 peach, diced
4 T avocado
3 small campari tomatoes (thankyou Deborah)
1c raw spinach
2c lettuce
4 oz tuna
and still hungry, so had celery stalk w/2t pnut butter
4P/4C/8F

total so far 11P/10C/14F
but planning on bedtime snack of:
protein powder mixed with hot water (like tea/coffee, helps sore throat)
1/2 c FF ice cream (not the best choice, but helps throat-sick with bronchitis)
3P/2C/0F

which will make the days total 14P/12C/14F

Feel free to be critical. Thats why I posted it!

Before the zone I usually ate around 800 calories a day to maintain weight and had to reduce to around 500 or less to lose. So I ate once a day, or mostly had liquid meals. All this food is overwhelming me. Its like, o crud, time to eat again? Now what? And even though I'm losing body fat and gaining lean body mass, my scale weight isn't moving much at all. So it seems like I should be eating about 8 blocks, not 14. Your thoughts, anyone?

Sue- Still praying for you. I know today had to be very hard for you. Wish I knew something comforting to say.

Thanks so much Kathleen. Sorry if I got a bit intense. It's just been that kind of day. Your kind sentiments, and those of all my Zone forum friends, help a lot. :-) In honor of Ruth, I took a little time out this afternoon to do some shopping to cheer me up. I bought 3 cute t-shirts at JCrew...my motto, when you can't decide which one, buy all 3! Just fitting into them is one of the fun perks of the Zone! There was a time when I mostly wore men's XXL (there weren't as many nice plus size women's clothes to be found 20 years ago). I'm going to think of those 3 shirts as my tribute to Ruth. I'll think of her every time I wear one to yoga class. In fact I'm wearing one right now. :-).

Sue, I know what you mean about tough days. I had a tough evening yesterday. Monday Night Football, and the Packers were playing the Vikings. Of course, the real story was about Brett Favre playing against the team that he led for so many years.

Anyway, this is one of the last things that I remember my BIL Steve talking about before he passed away. He was an avid Packer fan, but he was also a Favre fan, too. He was torn, but he felt that his allegience should continue to lie with the Pack.

Anyway, watching that game, I kept thinking about Steve, about what he would be thinking and saying about the game. Gotta admit that I did shed some tears over it all.

Good Morning Ladies

Sue...you have a very strong way of dealing with life's twists and turns. Excellent way of looking at your day as tough but nice...you are an inspiration in so many ways. And you are absolutely right that it would be best to just Zone the whole kitchen....unfortunately I think I would have a revolt on my hands!!! For now I'm probably best to focus on the ones that are willing to give it a shot and peck them off one-by-one (at least that's my secret plan! hehehehe!)

Sharyn...glad you are feeling better and congratulations on your progress!

Deborah...maintenance is good too!!! Congratulations on maintaining. Leafs lost AGAIN last night....I am such a sucker....how are the Stars doing?

Laurie...thanks for sharing your story about your kids and the Zone. I appreciate it so much!

CC...I'll dig up that recipe and post it in this forum next...hope I'm not too late for your pears, I know I've been away from the forum for a couple of days

Kathleen...if you eat that few calories your body will go into panic mode and you will find your loss will be very slow or non-existent. The wonderful thing about the Zone is you get to eat a lot more food than you are accustomed because of what you are eating (lots of veggies and fruits)....you can eat 12 cups of broccoli for the same impact as 1/3cup of pasta! Hope your broncitis feels better soon

It has been a stressful few days here...Logan (in the pic) has become quite ill...he is back home now (from the animal hospital) and seems to be improving every day but the tests have all come back pointing towards liver disease. We are trying to be optimistic but at the same time bracing ourselves that his time may be near.

Cran, here is the recipe you were asking about....it is delicious, especially if the pears are really ripe. this is the modified version based on my kids requests

STRAWBERRY AND PEAR FRITTATA
1 cup steel cut oats (8C)
5 ripe pears, cubed (5C)
3 cups sliced strawberries (3C)
16 egg whites (or 2 cups substitute) (8P)
4 oz lf cheese (I used half feta half cheddar) (4P)
6 Tbsp protein powder (or equivalent of 4P) (4P)
10 Tbsp chopped nuts (I used half pecans half slivered almonds) (28F = 16 + 12)
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp ginger

Spray 9x12 baking dish with olive oil cooking spray, place oats on bottom for crust. In a large mixing bowl combine egg whites, cheese, protein powder, nuts, pears and strawberries. Mix well. Add spices and extract and mix again. Pour mixture over crust and smooth into corners. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes at 350. Makes 16 blocks. Any leftovers heat really nicely in the microwave.

Thanks Jana. I don't always feel so strong, but I do my best. I'm not attending the funeral this morning, but I'm at peace that I have said my goodbyes. Everyone has their own way of dealing with loss. :-)

Poor Logan. I hope he's comfortable. How old is he?

Keep up updated on future the progress with the pecking order!

Good morning all,

Accountability is in my Journal (link in signature) -- had some bumps in the road on Monday, but right back on track :-) ... learning a LOT about what works and doesn't for me -- I'm VERY susceptible to cravings following any form of "unfavorable" carbs. Too bad :-( , but the benefits of being in the Zone outweigh those foods I need to stay away from! Sue, like you said -- just being able to buy clothes that I LIKE as opposed to anything that I can find that fits -- it's a good thing :-) .

Cranberry and Sue -- my heart goes out to you and what you're feeling these days. I'm glad to know that your friends/family that have passed had you in their lives.

Kathleen -- I don't think I am knowledgeable enough yet about the Zone to advise you on your food selections, but my initial reaction was the same as Jana's -- from my years of yo-yo dieting, I have learned that when I keep my caloric intake really low, my body goes into "survival mode", which means it burns as few calories as possible -- and I stop losing weight. What's worse, once I start adding calories back in, my weight will climb for a little while before my metabolism finally kicks in again. Fortunately, our bodies are resilient in that way, and can be "retrained" -- once my metabolism kicks in, I can resume losing weight as long as I keep my calories up. Hope this helps -- I have to keep reminding myself of this, because as you, I also struggle with feeling like I'm eating "too much"!

Jana -- I'm praying for Logan (I'm not all that religious, so when I say "pray", it's my own form of sending good wishes and hopes your way, and asking universe/Nature/God/extra-terrestrials ;-) for any help we can get!) . I have a Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix ("Shih-Poo") that we got just to appease my daughter -- however, that little dog has me wrapped around her little finger (or should I say "paw") -- I'm totally in love with her :-) !

Deborah -- I echo what Jana said about maintenance. Whenever I hit a few bumps and didn't lose weight, I considered it "practicing maintenance" -- which is very true, since we're learning how to get right back on track when we deviate a bit.

Have a good day all!

Laurie

Laurie, I applaud you for the progress you're making. You're getting to the point where you're not going to be able to turn back. Learning as much as you already have about the consequences of your body's reactions to particular meals, foods, and eating patterns is making it easier for you to make the right choices for yourself. Whether or not it feels easier to you right now, I do believe that the more experience and knowledge a person gains, the easier it gets. It keeps getting better from here. When it doubt, take a look at your food diary from a couple of months ago and compare it to now.

Thanks again for your kind thoughts. :-)

Thanks, Sue -- you REALLY made me feel better!

I'm trying to stay positive, but every one of these slips leads to a lot of negative thinking. It feels like a full-time job just trying to stop mentally beating myself up. I am so afraid of history repeating itself, and regaining all this weight. So these slips get me thinking that I'm not going to be able to keep it off this time. In my head, I do believe that I've got tools now to keep it off (i.e., the Zone program and the support that's here), but it's hard TRULY convincing my "heart" of that. I won't believe it until I prove it to myself :-) .

I know you all realize how valuable being on the forums is for support! It is a lifeline in many ways!
This morning: eggwhites w/manchego cheese and mushroom omelet, a small pc. of a homemade flax muffin (not zone favorable, but granddaughter made me do it) and black tea with yerba mate'....it held me well all morning as I went to the chiropractor and did my rotator cuff exercizes. (I have had this injury since July...may not have mentioned it here...sure is slow healing, but is a lot better)
Lunch will be big salad with apple and hardboiled eggwhites.
Dinner, (and DH now loooves this) burgers on romaine leaves! Maybe with wine.

Thank you Sue and Laurie for your kind thoughts. Its amazing how a pet becomes such an important part of your family isn't it? Logan had his 11th birthday on Sunday....he seems to be perking up a little everyday so who knows maybe the medications will work. I feel sort of silly for posting here about my dog, but I figured you are all familiar with him since he's been my avatar for the past couple of months.

Laurie, I echo Sue's applause....you are learning from your experiences and you are successfully maintaining for months now...you go girl!!!

Janet...excellent getting DH to eat his burger on lettuce...I may need some guidance from you as I proceed with my secret pecking-off plan! LOL!!! But seriously, is he Zoning with you?

Ha! No, he isn't zoning, but he has his own approach: scrambled eggs in the morning, protein drink at noon, wine before dinner and lots of meat at dinner, plus whatever I serve, like salad, or veggie, but then he keeps on with the wine (he can totally hold his liquor) or maybe has a glass of bourbon, a couple hands full of nuts or a pc. pf cheese...kind of an atkinsy approach. He was fine with going off grain with me recently and we have both felt better.....(our sin? cheese!)
He just doesn't mix P with C or anything...

I just want to say how happy I am to be here with all you ladies. You are all such an inspiration and provided so much support. I don't mean just the food/weight/zone.

Kathleen - you're welcome on the tomatoes. I hope you liked them as much as I do. Have you tried going down to 11 blocks a day? Maybe that is a happy medium between 14 blocks and the 800 calories a day you used to have. I could be wrong, but maybe the 14 is too many for you and that's what is leaving you feeling hungry. I know it makes no sense since you are eating more food, but I have found that at 11 blocks I'm never really hungry even though I eat less food on some days.

Sue and Cran - hang in there girls. We never forget those who have left us and really, who wants to. We just keep them in our hearts and love them.

Jana - I saw that about your Leafs. Stars are doing so so. We have yet to win, but we have lost both games in the shootout so at least we have two points. Today was jersey day at work, so I got to wear mine with all the signatures.

Doggie prayers for Logan. I'm glad he is feeling somewhat better. Don't feel silly at all about posting here. While I'm not a person that think animals are furry people, they are part of our families. I have a 17 year old cat. She is in good health, but I know she is on borrowed time at this point. Silly cat will probably outlive me!

Laurie - You inspire me so much. Just in the short time I have been here I can read the change in your thought process. Keep it up!

Janet - I hope your rotator cuff heals soon. They do take some time to heal, but the good news is that they can be healed without surgery.

Hi all, I am new to this whole website/community thing so I hope that I am not posting in a private thread... Just browsing thru and you all seem so supportive, and I would like some additional thoughts and advice if you don't mind.

Just a quick little bit about me (since you all seem to know each other well) I'm a teacher and just moved to the Chicago area from MO. I just got engaged in April, we are comming along well with the wedding plans but I have yet to try on any dresses b/c I plan to loose some weight before the wedding, which is about a year away. I have been on a couple diff. "diets" in the past few months however have not found anything that works well. I either didn't loose weight or I had to suffer all day hungry and sleepy and honestly obsessing over food all day. My sister is a big crossfit junkie and turned me on to The Zone a couple of weeks ago. It seems that the lbs have just been flying off, and I am never hungry. Actually I have still been having probs. finishing my food. So far I have read the Meals in Min. book and Mastering the Zone. I plan on reading the rest of the books as well. So I feel like I am still trying to get all the concepts, however I understand the basics (obv. b/c the lbs are literally falling off and I have no swelling in my ankles or fingers) I have not started doing much in the way of working out yet, I have been taking walks, however I do plan on adding more and more everyday. Anyway, here is what I had today...

B-fast
steel cut oats (with a dash of cinn. and 1 strawberry mashed in for taste)
3/4 c egg sub.
1t almond butter (just ate it plain b/c I like it so much)

Lunch
1 flat out wrap filled w/ 2oz turkey, light mayo and mustard
fresh pear

Snack
low fat cottage cheese
1/2 apple dipped in
1/3 t almond butter (ummm yeah, I REALLY love that stuff!)

Dinner
Chx kebobs drizzled w/ olive oil and w/ enough red/green peppers, onions, and pineapple to =2c
1/2 c honeydew melon

I dunno what my "midnight" or more like 10:30 snack will be. I like the wine and mini babybell light snack

Jana, oh no--I didn't realize what you were going through with your dog Logan! I hope he improves some for you. Last January, we had to put our cat to sleep. He was around 18, and he was my avator for the longest time on this forum. I can't remember if you were around then, but I do appreciate all of the kind words of support that I received from my zone buddies. And, then losing my BIL was very tough, and you all came through for me again. Now we are here for you and for Sue.

I definitely appreciate being a part of this family.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

  4. Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
  5. Oil conversion to ethyl esters
  6. Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
  7. True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
  8. Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating

Clean Sources

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.

Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.

Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3

Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
