Laurie- No I don't mind sharing the website. http://www.posetech.com/training/archives/000770.html
When my doctor first put me on the Zone for my heart, one of the first things I did was google The Zone to try to learn all I could about the diet. In reading through the website (think it was under testimonials) I kept reading about CrossFit. So I googled CrossFit. I was already exercising, and I really liked the CrossFit rationale, so I stopped what I was doing on my own, and started doing the CrossFit WOD. But then I wasn't losing weight, so I started jogging in addition to the CrossFit WOD. Jogging exhausted me, and I read on the CrossFit site that there is a method of training runners called POSE. So, I googled POSE, and started reading. On the left column of one of the POSE articles was a link that said "overweight/obese? Use this practical guide to start the desired change". So I clicked on the link, and thats how I got to the above article about changing your focus away from the number on the scale.
I agree with Sue. The Zone is NOT about the number on the scale. But for someone who has been chronically obese most or all of their life (like me), the scale number addiction is a hard habit to break. My doctor told me to forget about trying to lose weight and just focus on eating for my heart. And I'm trying, but I have to daily fight the urge to step on the scale to see if I've made "progress", even though weight loss isn't my drs goal. I tend to have this compulsive/obsessive personality and I'm trying hard to just mainly stick with the hand/eye method rather than counting blocks. I know its neurotic. I can't just go by feeling good, because after a few days of feeling good I'm back to "now what"? I need a defined, measurable goal, not just a feeling to aim for. Lab values are not enough motivation because I can't run to the lab and have them draw blood every week just to see if I'm doing "right" or better or whatever. Hope this makes sense.
Sharyn- How much protein powder and chopped nuts would one have to add to the rice krispie bar recipe to make each serving Zone balanced? (Just kidding, lol) I've never bought anything on ebay. Don't you have to have some kind of account and bid? |

Good evening all. I'll clarify the tomatoes. I am talking about campari tomatoes, I was just spelling it wrong. The ones I get are about the size of a roma tomato only round instead of oblong. I usually only have 2-3 because they have a high sugar content than regular tomatoes. For every 100 grams, they have 5g of carb and 3g of sugar. They are delicious and in my opinion have much more flavor than a regular tomato. my meals/snacks - BREAKFAST 9:30am 3C/3P/3F 1/3 c oatmeal 1 tsp raisins 2 tsp brown sugar splenda 2 turkey sausage patties 2 egg whites 6 almonds Sausage – 2 patties 0gC/13gP/7gF LUNCH 12:30pm 3C/3P/3F 1/3 cup water chestnuts 1 cup coleslaw mix ½ cup green onions ¼ cup carrots 3 oz tuna 1 tsp olive oil/soy/vinegar dressing SNACK 3:00pm 1C/1P/1F ¼ cup shelled edemame DINNER 6:30pm 3C/3P/3F 2 cups lettuce 1 cup cherry tomatoes ½ c cucumbers ½ cup grapes 3 oz lean beef 1 tsp olive oil/vinegar/soy sauce dressing SNACK ready to have at 9:30pm 1C/1P/1F ½ cup pears 1 oz cheese 6 peanuts TOTALS 11C/11P/11F |

Kathleen, I hear where you're coming from on the chronically obese thing. That was me. I was 42 years old and weighing in at an all time high for me, in the mid 200's. I'd given up on the idea of anything ever working for me as far as losing weight, because I'd tried lots of plans and nothing worked for me for very long. Mostly, I was scared about my future health, because I was feeling everyone of those extra 100 pounds, and not in a good way. It would tire me just to bring a week's worth of groceries from the car into the house, to take a short walk, or even to walk up a flight of stairs. I had debilitating hypoglycemic symptoms on a daily basis.
If you'd like to read more about how I ended up eating in the Zone, take a look at my 03/25/2009 5:11 PM posting in this thread:

Hello! Yes, I survived the teenagers! I don't recall what I fed them that night, other than some birthday cake. I had other things available, but they went for the cake. Next morning, they all wanted waffles, and I made up some of my zoned waffles, they liked them... they were curious about the smoothie, but after they saw what I put in there, they were no longer interested! LOL! I took them to the mall after making some lunch (plan was to fill them up so that they would not want the mall food). However, after some shopping, the food court was calling to them and they all ate some food and then some ice cream. Needlesss to say, they were all crashed out in the car on the way home! None of them really slept much all night, so I am amazed that they lasted as long as they did. Me? I slept pretty good, didn't eat the mall food except for a few bites of Brittany's chicken. I did have a latte, which is a real treat for me, I don't have them all that often. Today, I went to church, came home and threw some stuff into the crock pot. Delicious meal with a sirloin roast, carrots, onion, fennel, chunks of cabbage and some pear. If anyone has any ideas on pear recipes, please send them my way. I have a ton of them, and I want to use them in a zoneful way. Sue, sorry about your friend. Just read your post. That is so sad, but she is not suffering now, and as I said before, at least she was surrounded by friends and was doing something that she enjoyed as one of her last conscious moments. My prayers are with you, as well as her family (have been doing a lot of long-distance praying lately, Thank God for the Internet). |

Kathleen...great post about using alternative goals to weight-loss.
CC...glad your daughter's party went so well. Meredith's strawberry & pear frittata recipe in the kids forum is excellent and uses 5 pears per recipe. I made it again on the weekend and the kids gobbled it up! If you can't find it let me know and I'll post it here for you.
Laurie...I am in a similar situation as you with my youngest DD. She is almost 12 and has been getting increasingly heavier over the past year or two....she has approached me and said she would like to learn and try to eat more like me because she senses she will have a weight issue as she gets older and she would rather learn how to avoid it now rather than how to get it off later. I am approaching this very carefully as I know the statistics of eating disorders in teenaged girls is scary and I do not want to 'create' a problem by agreeing that she should start to watch what and how much she is eating. What I have done is point out that the way I eat is to be healthy and energetic and NOT to loose weight. I think it has helped that she has seen me slim down eating this way BUT more importantly she sees me continuing to eat this way even though I do not want to loose anymore...I think it enforces that it truly is a healthy lifestyle rather than a 'fad' diet to just loose weight. That's all good...now the tough part, she is a pasta and bread addict AND she is quite a picky eater...so getting her to actually eat in the Zone has been difficult and I have to admit that I grow impatient trying to find a meal that she will like as everything I suggest is greeted with a 'no, I don't like that...' She does really enjoy smoothies in the morning and I made the PB&J smoothie before she came in the kitchen one morning so she wouldn't know what was in it (she insists she doesn't like cottage cheese or yogurt and both are in this smoothie) and she LOVED it...said it tasted just like a PB&J sandwich without the bread! Next I'm going to sit down with her with the pile of Zone recipes I have and let her pick out meals she thinks she would like to try and then I'll make sure I have the ingredients in the house. I think this will give us a better starting point as I try to transition from being a 'lone-Zoner' to doing it with a partner.
Sue...what's the Eli count-down?

Good morning all! Kathleen -- try www.half.com -- it's like eBay in that people are selling their stuff really cheap -- but there's no bidding. You just order as if you were ordering from any other website. And the more you post, the more I see myself in you :-) -- I also have trouble with goals that aren't "measurable", and I also tend to get neurotic about counting grams and converting to blocks. I have to restrain myself, and make a conscious effort trust the hand/eye method! Because if we do this program in a way that requires so much focus and effort, it won't be sustainable for the long-term. Jana -- I can also relate to your story about your youngest DD -- my DD is 11, and has always been naturally slim (lucky her -- takes after her Dad's side of the family, whereas my DS takes after mine ;-) ... ). However, she is starting to put on weight around her middle, and has become self-conscious about it. Like your DS, she is also a very picky eater, and has only a small list of foods she'll eat (not too many of which are all that healthy). After my experience growing up in a house of chronic "dieting" and resulting self-esteem issues, I'm VERY cautious about how I approach this as well. Even as I was losing weight, I never made it about the number on the scale (at least, not to her, that was my own internal issue ... ). It was always about eating healthier so that I would BE healthier. And she's seen me have more energy and I'm just all-around happier. Unfortunately, she loves the TV show "The Biggest Loser", which is ALL about the number on the scale, and she would always ask me "how much did you lose this week", and "how much have you lost all together" ... I was reluctant to answer, but I also didn't want to make the subject "taboo". Anyway, the benefit of making the changes as Sue described will be not only for my DS but also my DD (although more as preventive in her case). Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your stories and insights -- you have no idea how much it helps me :-) ! I've been doing and feeling great on the Zone -- a few unfavorable carbs here and there, but balancing and not feeling negative effects (specificially, no cravings -- yay!) Also, forcing myself to get to bed early -- helps avoid the late-night danger zone of uncontrolled snacking, AND I'm getting a decent amount of sleep :-) . I think that's a big part of why I'm FINALLY feeling like I'm in the Zone. Not to mention -- more sleep -> less tired the next day -> less caffeine needed! So it's all a good cycle to (finally) be getting into. Have a great day, Laurie |

Even better yet, you might want to consider switching your kitchen to a Zoned one. It's easier, and better for everyone.

Good evening everyone. I had a day off today. Trying to burn some vacation days at work so I don't lose them. It was nice to do nothing on a Monday. Thanks for the nice comments about my menus Sue. As I have mentioned before, I get up at 4:00am and don't get home sometimes until almost 6:30. I have to cook simple and quick without too many dishes to clean up. I need some down time that doesn't involve the kitchen. LOL. I hope you enjoy the tomatoes as much as I do. my meals/snacks for today - BREAKFAST 9:30am 3C/3P/3F ½ english muffin ½ apple 2 egg whites 1 oz canadian bacon 1 oz cheese 1 ½ tsp peanut butter I made my own Egg McMuffin! LUNCH 12:30pm 3C/3P/3F 2 cups lettuce 2 campiri tomatoes ½ cup strawberries ½ apple 1 cippolini onion 3 oz deli chicken 3 tsp slivered almonds Dressing – vinegar, soy, olive oil I love love love this salad. I know the combinations sound a bit odd, but when you mix them together with a nice tangy dressing.... yummy. SNACK 3:00pm 1C/1P/1F ½ cup peaches 1 oz beef jerkey 6 peanuts DINNER 6:30pm 3C/3P/3F 1 cup sauerkraut 1/3 cup applesauce 1 orange (very small about the size of a tangerine) 4 oz turkey smoked sausage Sausage per oz - 1.5gC/4.5gP/2.5gF Okay, I gave myself a headache trying to balance the blocks in the rest of my meal with this sausage. I finally decide the carb in the sausage wasn't enough to worry about about and called the protein and sausage close enough. SNACK - ready to go at 9:30pm 1C/1P/1F ½ cup grapes 1 oz cheese 3 almonds TOTALS 11C/11P/11F |

| Hi Kathleen -- the MediZone program is based on the Zone, but very different. The food list is much more restricted, and the amount eaten every day is much higher in lean protein with very limited servings of low-glycemic fruits/vegetables. There are no added fats, although a dash of low-fat salad dressing or olive oil is optional each day. For the first few days, you're on a pure protein diet in order to get into ketosis. Then, the fruits/vegs are added in (but I found I was still in ketosis much of the time -- which is the most drastic difference between the two programs). After reaching our goal weight, we then transition to the "maintenance" portion of the program, which is the Zone. That's when I researched and found this site, and I've been here ever since :-) . |

Good morning! I have been doing the Zone for 1 month now and have lost 12 pounds!!! YAY! I think I am mostly excited because it hasn't been really hard or a huge struggle for me to make these changes. I can see myself doing this the rest of my life. My food yesterday: Breakfast-3 block meal cottage cheese mandarin oranges almonds Lunch-estimated 3 block meal from food bar at Whole Foods Market Salad with pepper strips, mushrooms topped with ground turkey (taco seasoned) grated cheddar cheese small dollop of guacamole This was a good lunch, but I found the turkey to be almost too salty.... Snack: 1% milk ummmm.....er....chocolate chip cookie Dinner: sirloin tips onions, tri-pepper mix black beans olive oil grated cheddar cheese Snack: Soynuts (I had these with a bottle of water at the movies!) |

great, Sharyn! Deb, that salad really does sound yummy! I made borscht last night....never made it before. Lots of turkey, chicken stock, veggies, and of course, beets, 2 golden, one red. It was a huge soup, we ate the rest for lunch today. (yeah, we had the sour cream with it! just a Tbs.) |

Good evening all. Congrats Sharyn. You're doing great. Now that you are almost well, staying zoned will be much easier for you. Janet, that salad is delicious. You should try it. You're borscht sounds great, but I don't like beets. One of my favorites things to do in the winter is to cook a big pot of soup on Sunday. I can't wait to experiment with zone friendly soups. Okay, so today was weigh in day. For the first time since starting, I didn't lose any weight this week. I think I had too many instances of being "not quite in the zone" this weekend and it worked against me. I'm glad I didn't gain any though, so I'm okay with that. Meals/snacks today JUMP START 4:30am 1C/1P/1F ½c probotic yogurt 2 cashews BREAKFAST 8:00am 2C/2C/2F 1/3 c oatmeal 1 tsp raisins 2 oz canadian bacon 2 egg whites 2 tsp slivered almonds LUNCH 11:30am 3C/3P/3F 1 cup sauerkraut 1/3 cup applesauce 1 orange (again a very small one) 4 oz turkey smoked sausage ½ tsp olive oil Sausage per oz - 1.5gC/4.5gP/2.5gF SNACK 2:30pm 1C/1P/1F 1 cup cucumbers 1 oz jerkey 6 peanuts DINNER 6:30pm 3C/3P/3F 1 cup asparagus 1 cup cauliflower ½ cup peaches 3 oz chicken breast 9 almonds SNACK plated and ready to go at 9:30pm 1C/1P/1F 2 campiri tomatoes 1 oz cheese 3 olives TOTALS 11C/11P/11F Good night. Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.
8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil

- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
