I am new to the zone and I know it is better to not drink alcohol while dieting. Can I have anything to drink at all or would it cause the plan to fail? What types of alcohol drinks are better than others?

4 oz of red wine, accompanied by an ounce of cheese makes a nice evening zone snack. Some people do well on this, others do not.

My husband and I must have our 4 oz of red wine and stick of string cheese every night or we would feel very deprived. Before the Zone, we drank 3 or 4 glasses almost daily, so we really appreciate our 4 little ounces and savor it. This is our second go-around on the Zone.

That sounds really nice! I think savoring a glass of wine with your hubby as a night-time snack sounds like the beginning of a nice romantic evening. Kudos to both of you for returning to the zone, and doing it together!

Thanks for the info. So many people just say that you cannot have a drink while on the zone. That worked for me for about a week. I live on the water so I really enjoy having a drink and watching the sunset after a long hard day. Now I can still have my 'time out' without feeling guilty. Thanks so much!

Hi there,

My name is sue and I've been doing the zone for about 5 years!!

I sure understand the desire for wine each and every day...it actually became a daily happening starting around 5 with 2-3 glasses of wine per nite during the week and more on weekends.

Since I will be 50 at my next birthday, I decided to do a little experiment....I stopped drinking Mon-Thurs and did only Fri/Sat/Sun. I cannot even tell you what a difference it made in my mid-section.

I hope 1/nite works for you and hubby. My husband has a nice Blue Moon beer every night and hasn't gained an ounce -- maybe men are different.

You might want to try the weekend drinking and see if your Zone results are better. Good luck!

Michelob Ultra is only 2.6g of carbs and 95 calories. I imagine they're bad carbs but it's football season and one-half of a beer isn't going to cut it. You have to live a little too. I'll have 2 or 3 Michelob Ultras over a Saturday afternoon and maybe a cheese stick as I go and it seems to work okay for me.

yes, you do have to live a little. I don't think your Sat afternoon(or Sunday afternoon) beer will make a huge difference overall -- that only equals 3-4 beers per week. I was drinking 3-4/night -- that makes a difference!

I started my zone diet today, and am also extremely worried about this....as an avid homebrewer I always have beer on hand and it is nothing ot sit down and have a few drinks with friends....I am going to try and stick to one glass once or twice a week, until I get to where I want to be, then I may allow myself a few glasses one day on the weekend....Ill see how it goes!! I work out at a minimum of three days a week, so I think I will be ok once I get myself in the zone...

Regardless of "Lite" or not, the Alcohol which does not have to be counted on the label, is in effect a Carb. As I recall from Dr. Sears, Lite or not, treat Alcohol as a Carb. So, when I do have a beer, like after cutting the grass on a hot humid day, relaxing after a shower, I will have a full beer, and enjoy it, rather than suffer with a watered down lite beer. But, I don't make a habit of it.

I don't mind low-carb beers. For me, choosing a low-carb beer is similar to using low-carb bread if I'm going to stray and have a piece of toast with my egg-white omelet. You could have a nice slice of sourdough with all it's carbs or compromise a little with the low-carb bread.

I can appreciate a beer lovers loyalty to "regular" beer. Everything in moderation. Getting together for football over a few beers is something I'm going to do regardless of diet. Instead of compounding the negative impact of alcohol with high carbs, I'm compromising a little on the flavor and feeling okay about the whole thing.

Hi Sue:

I feel the same way you do about wine. I also did the same thing that you did. I stopped drinking wine M-TH and drinking on the weekends.

When you drink wine on the weekends, do you just eat a protein with the wine since the wine is a carb or do you eat a full meal too?

Do you notice any difference on the scale Monday morning or with you fat % after drinking on the weekend?

I am impressed that you have been doing the Zone for 5 years. How much weight have you lost?

Hi;

I'm not sue (nor a boy named sue - lol).
My wife and I both drink a glass of 4 oz with red wine, a couple times ea week.
Yes, have it with Protein and Fat for a full block of P, F, & C.

Sometimes we will have it with a meal, and sometimes we have it as part of the late night 1 Block snack.
And though I am very Carb sensitive, no, I have not noticed any ill effects.
Now, a flour/grain type of unfav carb - and yes, I notice it the next morning if I weigh myself.
(Except Deamfield's pasta - wonderful).

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I see that I was actually replying to a Zoner named Susan - not Sue. She did what I did as far as giving up wine during the week.

My husband and I are big into wine tasting and traveling to California and Oregeon to taste wines, so I drink more wine that most Zoners, I am sure, but I keep my weight down and feel healthy. We went on the Zone because it made good sense to me health wise and I always noticed being up on the scale after eating pasta. Also, with turning 43 this year and being hypo thyroid, I wanted to make sure to stay in check with my weight.

How long have you been on the Zone Diet? Did you start it to lose weight or for health reasons?

Quick answer, both! It's been a while, previous version of forums, where-in I was much more active - posted there.
Same day back from Dr. Weight was at all-time high of 225, and cholesterol was at 284. Dr. was conservative, but finally wanted to prescribe Zocor, lo dose 10 or 20 mg - I forget, that was in April/May 2002... By August, with only first 1-1/2 months May-June on Zocor, and on strict Zone May onward, with PGFO through August, 5 capsules daily - weight down to about 200 and cholesterol down to 224. A few months later, weight at 189 and colesterol dwon to 204, last checked, a little over a year ago (due) it was weight at 175 where I've been maintaining, and cholesterol at 184.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight.
