| I just read that diet soda is ok to drink, as long as it is decaffeinated. If I drink diet soda, how much of it can I drink, and how do I count it for my daily block (if at all)? Also, I drink loose leaf tea, generally Chinese, which does contain a low amount of caffeine. I can reduce the caffeine by drinking the second steeping, but will a very small amount of caffeine still be bad for me? I'm new to the diet and I hope there is some seasoned pro who has gone through this problem who may be able to give me some advice. |

The info you have about diet soda being ok for the Zone is contrary to Zone recommendations. Drinking it is not recommended for the Zone. Barry Sears has explained that when drinking diet soda, receptors on the tongue sense the sweetness and, even though the soda contains no calories, this sends signals to the pancreas to produce more insulin. This makes it difficult to maintain insulin in the Zone.
A little tea is not going to be detrimental to you Zone efforts.

| Wow Sue! You're quick! Thanks anyway! I'll have to look into that...I know that stevia doesn't raise your insulin level, so I would hope the soda wouldn't either...if I find out I'll let you know! I found some great tasting sodas! |

| I am not sure about that, either. I found some stevia-sweetened soda, too. It was pretty good. However, I am concerned that perhaps stevia may actually work similarly to other sweeteners as a sweetness receptor on the tongue, which stimulates an initial insulin release. |

There are no long-term studies that show that Sue’s point is true. Most evidence cited is anecdotal and tested solely on animals. A link between taste and calories has been discovered (in lab rats) that tracks how much the rat has eaten. Their taste buds tell the brain to expect food but the energy is not delivered. This confuses the rat’s brain and distorts their ability to judge how many calories they have consumed and, over time (key point) they overeat to make up for the perceived difference and ultimately gain weight. But, with a calorie restricted diet (such as the Zone), that should not be a concern. If you follow the number of blocks you should have per day, you should not overcompensate for fake calories (assuming this study is correct). If you are using Splenda or Stevia, you should count X number of servings for one carb block. They are not free of calories and carbohydrates, just much lower than regular sugar. Also, keep in mind that sugar substitutes such as saccharin, sucralose and aspartame are chemicals. Stevia is all natural. My ultimate point is that if you need sugar substitutes to help you stay on the Zone eating plan, then don’t fret over it. Some people are so motivated when they start a new eating plan that they completely eliminate everything they think could be a contributor to their weight gain. And that gung ho attitude is commendable, but that deprivation more often than not leads to abandoning the eating plan after a couple of weeks. And that is much worse than ingesting sugar substitutes. Use sugar substitutes if you need them (diet soft drinks, lite yogurt, splenda sprinkled on strawberries for desert, in your coffee, etc.). If you stick with the number of blocks allowed on a daily basis and you are exercising, you should lose weight. I would start by eliminating caffeine, which is a real drug and has measurable effects on your body. Switch to decaf coffee and/or diet caffeine free soft drinks. If caffeine withdrawals are severely affecting you, use half decaf and half regular coffee until you adjust. It really doesn’t take long to eliminate caffeine from your diet. Once you are on a roll and have the Zone diet ingrained into your daily life, then you can consider eliminating sugar substitutes. Finally, I am not a doctor or research scientist, but an avid reader and a logical person. This post is not intended as medical advice and is solely my opinion. I looked on drsears.com and could not find much information, but I did find this response from Dr. Sears: "Stevia is a non-approved food additive; therefore, you can’t add it to a food and still call it food. In small amounts, Stevia is fine to add to foods, but as with all artificial sweeteners, it fools the sweet receptors in the tongue to signal the release of insulin from the panaceas in anticipation of real carbohydrates coming into the bloodstream. Ultimately, excess insulin does not cause wait gain; overeating does. Again, if a person following the Zone Diet keeps within their allotted food blocks, then overeating should not be a problem. |

Hey, Ricky! I partially agree with you on some of your points. For one, if drinking a decaf diet soda is a "make it or break it" item, then by all means, it is better to drink diet soda in the zone than to give it all up. You are right, excess insulin does not cause weight gain. But, excess insulin DOES cause the body to sense hunger, which leads to eating (or overeating). The excess calories lead to weight gain. In the example with the artificial sweetener, it is the excess insulin that stimulates the sensation of hunger, which leads to overeating. However, one of the benefits of being in the Zone is experiencing freedome from hunger. It is going to be difficult to stay in the Zone if one is hungry all the time, because then it becomes more of a "mind over matter" deal, and most of the time, the mind will eventually lose the deal. It is going to be very difficult to keep within the allotted food blocks if one is hungry prematurely. Hope that helps! |

My main reason for posting was not to offend anyone, but to clarify what seems to be a confusing element of the Zone lifestyle. Many beginners come to this forum to seek advice and guidance from the more experienced members. And I have noticed that you (Cranberrycat) and Sue are generous with your time helping those that are less experienced. However, I have seen similar questions like Matthew’s regarding foods with sugar substitutes (lite yogurt, diet soft drinks) and similar responses like Sue’s. Sue’s response was correct, but she left out a critical caveat—that excess insulin does not cause weight gain, overeating does. You are correct that it is possible some people may suffer from the same experience that animal testing revealed; sugar substitutes may cause some people to overeat due to excess insulin production. Please keep in mind that these tests have been conducted on mice and not humans. I also realize that sugar substitutes are chemicals that, over a long period, may not be advantageous to a person’s overall health. So, eliminating them from your diet is a good thing. And, I agree with your overall point that it may be possible for some people to have a difficult time staying in the Zone if they consume sugar substitutes. But for someone that is starting out and making a wholesale change to the way they eat and also telling them that they should not consume sugar substitutes presents a challenge that some will not be able to meet. My point of contention is that the allusion that sugar substitutes can cause a person to gain weight without explaining why isn’t helpful. Again, I refer to Dr. Sears: “…as with all artificial sweeteners, it fools the sweet receptors in the tongue to signal the release of insulin from the panaceas in anticipation of real carbohydrates coming into the bloodstream. When they don’t, the excess insulin drives down blood sugar so that you are likely to over-consume more calories at your next meal.” I say if you can’t stomach plain yogurt but like “lite” yogurt, then eat it and don’t worry about it right now. And if you prefer something flavored when you drink, then drink that artificially sweetened soft drink. But, also be aware that sugar substitutes may stimulate hunger so make sure not to overeat at your next meal. Sugar substitutes are minor in the grand scheme of a person’s overall diet. Concentrate on integrating the Zone into your daily routine for you and your family. Once it is routine and you are losing weight (which, to be honest, is the reason most people turn to the Zone), then work on eliminating those things that are detrimental to your overall health or may cause you to not be optimally in the Zone. |

| I drink plain water, Poland Springs flavored carbonated waters, a huge variety of herbal teas (iced and hot; always unsweetened), and plain water with slices of veggies and fruit added that's been chilled for a couple of hours so the flavors blend (like cucumber, apple, orange, lemon, lime, berries, etc.) |

I have been up and down this road before. I go through spurts where I will only drink water, sparkling water, decaf coffee, and tea. Lately, I do enjoy having ONE soda per day. My favorite right now is a product called "Enviga". It is a sparkling green tea. Yes, it has caffeine and artificial sweetener, but I just love the taste. Diet Coke used to be my favorite soda, but Enviga has definitely taken over. It is not a cheap drink, and so I only have one per day, but this is a special treat for me. |

| I drink a lot all day and I am the same way--water gets boring. I drink diet caffeine free cola. If you have a Winn Dixie grocery store near you, their private label soft drinks, Chek, come in many great flavors and are sugar and caffeine free (strawberry and grape are my favorites). I do sometimes drink crystal light but each serving does have a small amount of calories. |

| I see that there is also a diet soda out there that has stevia as a sweetener. I can't remember, I think it is called "Zevia". I tried the cola once, and it is pretty decent. So, if anyone is opposed to using "artificial" sweeteners, then perhaps this would be a good choice. |

Good morning/afternoon,
I have been following the Zone since January (8 months) and have been successful - I feel so much better and healthier. I have lost 45 pounds and still have about another 40 to go. But, here is my issue, I cannot give up my coffee and of course it is caffeinated with 1 tablespoon of Half & Half and 1 Equal. I drink about 6-8 ounces of coffee every morning. I have thought of going 1/2 caffeine to wean myself off and maybe trying soy milk instead. I don’t like Splenda at all and I could do without the sugar. What is the best soymilk and how much could I put in my coffee?
Your advice/suggestions will be very helpful.

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
