Dr. sugggested I look into Dr. Sears for help with weight loss (need to lose about 30-40 pounds, have knee problems, broken tail bone, periods about every three weeks, feel bloated, fat, and ugly).
I just started reading on his site yesterday. All of this looks promising, but I'm scared. First, I have texture issues with food so I've never really enjoyed meat. To feel full I've grown up (now age 38) eating peanut butter, bread and other carbs, and dairy. I'm not really a vegetarian--- just a picky eater. I'm not sure what book to read and really concerned about the amount of time it takes to figure all this stuff out. I checked out the 7-day meal plan for vegetarians. What were all those powders? That really freaked me out. I don't want to make excuses, but I need to be realistic. I have a husband, children, and a full time job as many of you do. How do you manage the time it takes to mix all these powders, plan and prepare this food and keep up with day to day responsibilities? (I know you guys have more energy than me because your doing the Zone. ) I'm scared to commit to any plan but scared by the thought of continuing to live feeling the way I do. Where do I start? How is this going to be managable? I already get up at 5 AM in order to get my family and self out the door and that does not include time to exercise. HELP!

Don't worry about powders, the best way to do the zone IMO is to eat food rather than buying bars, shakes and powders. Oh, sometimes it is helpful to have a protein powder to add to shakes and smoothies, but that is really about it, and you can certainly assemble a protein smoothie without it.

A quick smoothie that I like to make takes me only a few minutes to whip up. I do use some protein powder in it, but it certainly is not necessary.

2 cups frozen strawberries
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup cottage cheese
2 tsp olive oil (only 1 tsp if your cottage cheese and yogurt have fat)

If you use some plain or vanilla protein powder, you could cut back on the cottage cheese (or even eliminate it, if you like). But, as I said, if using powders is a daunting task, then it certainly is not necessary.

Have you looked around on the website? If you have found the food lists, then take a look at the protein list, and choose things that you like. Meat is not required, you can still get adequate protein from eggs, tofu, cottage cheese, etc. Maybe there are some meats on the list that you haven't tried? Different meats have different textures.

A good book for you may be Zone Meals in Seconds. It gives a pretty good rundown on how to build meals and live the Zone lifestyle. And, some pretty good (and easy) recipes in there, too.

Hope that helps, don't be afraid to ask more questions!

great recipe, CC! Easy!
Stacey, you will not be sorry for checking this diet out. It's more a way of life....if it all looks daunting, just start by always having a bit of protein with your carbs. Not vegetable protein, but, say cottage cheese, eggs, tofu, turkey bacon, deli slices of chicken, etc.....then keep reading the Quick Start guide over on the right...and start changing your carbs away from grains toward fruit and veg.
That's just getting your toe in the water, though....Sue K. will probably tell you more....
(whadya mean, "texture" problems? meat is too.....chewy?)

Stayce...
There are a lot of reasons why-not start a commitment for life. (which this is...) Rather to do that, I invite you to think the reasons why you should do this.
-First and more important, because of you. Care about yourself, love you and deserve the best to you. That is a very powerfull why.
- you kids.. to give them a legacy of good health and good eating... to be slim and self cofident
- your husband... to improve health, energy... positive thinking.
If you commit to yourself, you can do it. Same as you we have full schedule ... I have a full time job, two youngs and no husband... need to take care fo my house and very low income that need to be streched.. but with all those "inconvinients" (which is just life..).... I managed to start, and involved my kids into right eating.
All this is day by day accomplish... not wihout pain.. I must say... on the beginning all changes are painfull, ~~I've been there, I've done that~~ but the rewards you will have.. surpass all expectations.. Good health, more energy, thin body... and better attitude... Make a compromise with yourself.. you can do it. We can support.

Thank you ladies! The cold hard truth is I have to make some very painful changes. I confess though. I'm afraid of never getting to enjoy the things I love like pizza, tacos, and mac and cheese. I also read in one thread that someone said something about giving up coffee. Would someone direct me to the correct page in the site about beverages? My only vice here is coffee-black and strong. I don't drink alcohol. I rarely drink fruit juices because I don't want to drink my calories. I like to chew them, especially if they're crunchy! I do enjoy a diet soda from time to time and I have nothing against caffine free drinks. I will have to slowly go back to caffine free though. I've done it before but started up again because I needed the pick me up.

My texture issues with food...
It's hard to explain. One thing I detest is slimy. I grilled zucchini slices last night. As soon as it hit my tongue I reached for a napkin so I could quickly get it out of my mouth. I was raised by meat lovers. Even as a small child I would disect my food. If I spotted anything that resemebled fat, grissle, goo or slime, I wouldn't touch the stuff. Most peoiple that know me simply and lovely tell my that I'm just weird when it comes to food.

I crave salty things. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my blood pressure though. I run on the low side. As I get close to my monthly cycle it can even go down to 90/50. Naturally I don't feel like doing anything on those days. I'm a very talkative person but not on low pressure days.

Hello, as you can see, I too am a newbie, but only to this board as I was a Zoner for awhile but fell off the wagon a couple years ago. I too have a problem with textures of certain meat. I am not a huge meat eater, but what I do, is just eat the meats I can eat without a problem. Very little ground beef for me. A friend of mine can't eat steaks and other type of unground flesh meat but has no problem with ground meats. The total opposite of me. So, she eats only ground stuff. Just eat the meats you can eat and if not, there are always ideas for vegetarians on this site too. Good luck. I know it sounds intimidating at first, but once you get it, it's easy and actually fun.

Welcome Stacey!

I started the Zone 15 years ago at age 42, weighing in the mid-200's, with 3 kids, husband, etc. I lost 100 pounds in a little less than 2 years and I've kept it off ever since by staying in the Zone. You can view my before and after photos in the Photobucket album in my signature below. I did the plate method of the Zone during the time I lost the excess weight (dividing the plate into thirds). Protein powder is for convenience sake, not a requirement. It's not necessary to eat it if you prefer not to; but check out my brownie batter smoothie and you just might change your mind! You can find it here: http://www.zonediet.com/Community/Forums/tabid/121/forumid/3/postid/32875/view/topic/tpage/9/Default.aspx

I've been through a lot of health issues too, and I understand how overwhelming it can get at times (I had a brain tumor, breast cancer and some other things; you can more read about my experiences here in these forums).

As for which books to read, start with TOXIC FAT and then read THE ANTI-INFLAMMATION ZONE. TOXIC FAT will tie the whole picture together for you. It’s the newest Zone book out less than a year, and contains the most up-to date info of all the Zone books. To begin the diet today without begin overwhelmed, go to the Zone calculator (link at right in HELPFUL TOOLS), enter your statistics and then got to the links that appear under you calculator results. The info found there will enable you to easily get into the Zone in no time and begin enjoying the benefits.

I agree with you about being realistic. Being realistic can be a big plus when it comes to making the Zone fit into your lifestyle. The best way to start the Zone diet and to begin to see benefits (in about a week or less) is to jump back into the water with both feet and make the Zone your own. Find out which of your favorite fruits, veggies and protein sources are Zone favorable by following the Basic Zone Rules (found in Quick Start Guide; link also at right). Change is scary for most people. One success builds upon another and you'll find yourself changing before you even realize it. You no longer need to feel blown out of the water. Everyone here was once a newbie to the Zone, so we understand how it feels. Ask lots of questions. There are many friendly and helpful experienced Zoners here. As for the suggested menus, the 7 day planners, etc. same as with the protein powder, they're to make it easier for those who want to use them, but are not a necessity.

Focusing on the positive things about your situation and what you can do might help a lot. Here's a recent Zone article about it: http://www.zonediet.com/tabid/130/itemid/1179/Do-you-suffer-from-stinkin-thinkin.aspx

Entering the Zone and making it your lifestyle will be one of the most amazing journeys you've ever taken. Enjoy every minute of your new start! I'll be happy to help if you have questions!

SueK

I read the article you suggested. I am very guilty of stinkin thinkin when it comes to myself (as many women are). My friends and family have always told me that I'm too critical of myself. I do not want to become a self absorbed person, but I do need to make important investments in my health. I think one of the most challenging things about life is finding balance. It is too easy to go on one side or the other of extremes. Keeping healthy balance takes "muscle." I do know that most things tangible and intangible in life are not gotten or achieved by easy pathways. Maybe my very first step needs to be to prepare myself mentally and emotionally as I read these books. I need to stop telling myself how fat and weak I am.

Thanks for the help.

Wow! I think that is a really good approach. Definitely, finding balance, and moreso YOUR balance. What works for one may not work for all. Any change for the better will benefit you in the end, and each step you take will make the next one easier. Trying to reach an extreme right away is probably going to set you up for failure, but taking it one step at a time will give you a feeling of accomplishment.

You're welcome Stacey! Great insight! As you read TOXIC FAT you'll learn how and why your weight is not necessarily your fault. With the Zone you can take control your body's tendencies to store fat and change things. It'll be a whole new ball game, different than any you've ever seen or experienced before.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
