Well, I have read the Zone books in the past - several, at least. and I have jumped in a couple of times. When I have, I have felt very good, not hungry at all, and clear headed. We're talking a couple of forays into the program over the last few years.

Why I didn't continue on, I don't know. Emotional eating, perhaps, and then abandonment of any plan at all. However, I did pick up some useful tips those times, like the protein to carb ratio. I have also joined and quit WW several times. That program works too, although I found I needed to tweek the carb/protein significantly. Invariably, I would quit that too.

Now, I really am aware of the need to do something. My hips are so big the calculator for protein doesn't even go that high! I'm thinking 11 blocks is right, or should I eat more than that?

I'm 265 pounds, and started piling on the weight when I quit smoking 18 years ago. So, I DO remember slim days!
Anyway, nearing 60, and knowing I have blood sugar issues, if not full blown diabetes by now, I really am ready to take the plunge and stick with it. When all is said and done, when I review my eating habits, what I am doing wrong, and what seems to work best for me, I keep coming back to the Zone. I may even still have some of the books at home.

I like this forum because you can see people's progress and get tips and ideas. I like the idea of posting the week's date and then one's weight right behind it...

I probably won't post a lot, just when I have specific questions or to update...
I'll tell you, where I work there is an older gentleman that is rather "slow" and it turns out he is diabetic and had a stroke a few years ago. I do not want to go there!!

I should also add that instead of trying to do the plan perfectly starting tomorrow morning, since there are several components to it, I want to start with controlling the unfavorable carbs part first (my worst area), then start apply the various guidelines, getting the supplements, etc. If I try to start all points on the same day, it would be overwhelming - and I wouldn't start right away.

I did give up coffee over a month ago, and don't miss it. So, one major thing (for me) is out of the way.

Yes 11 blocks would be correct. Toxic fat would be the book to read to get back into the Zone with the most up-to-date info. When you're ready to add fish oil (the sooner the better), your startig dose would be at least 5 grams of EPA and DHA daily (2 teaspoons, or 8 capsules), the dose Barry Sears recommends for a person beginning a diet.

I am with you on the slow start, sounds like a good way of approaching it so that it is not all overwhelming. In the beginning for me, I also went slow with just a few changes, and just added in more guidelines as I went along.

another possible toe in the water: just eat a bit of protein with everything you eat. Having an apple? take a bite of cheese. Best of luck to you, you won;t regret it!

Thank you for the kind and welcoming replies!

The first day, I mainly tried to just stay away from the bad carbs. (cookies, pasta, breads, pizza, breaded deli chicken, mac and cheese) I was really feeling lousy, no energy, puffy (I guess am sensitive to salt too)Went through my foods to see what was on hand, and what would work, and what wouldn't. Made a list. Yesterday (Friday) was mainly shopping and chopping.

Did well yesterday, wrote down everything, and I am starting to feel better. Less puffy, less lethargic. More alert.

I'm sure I'll have questions, and the forum looks like a great repository of info. One big wrinkle, I work graveyard shift 2 days a week - I'm on it now. Yesterday was a "normal" day off, so had 3 meals and 1 snack. Saved the pm snack until I got to work and ate it around 1 am. Thinking ahead, I cooked an egg dish to eat for breakfast here at work - since when I go home, I will go right to bed until lunchtime. Problem is, about 2:30 a.m. I was starving. I work where there are meals prepared ahead of time, so I had the protein and cheese and skipped the bread. Had 2 helpings of that. Then, around 5:00 am, I could stay away from the cookies no longer!! Had 2 helpings of those. Now, I will have to save my egg dish until lunch, after sleeping. Can't eat it on top of everything else!!

So, one question would be how to space the meals on the two graveyard days. On the first day, I have a normal day during the day and take a nap in the late evening, then I am up all night and go to sleep around 8 am. Then I get up around noon, and try to go back to sleep by 6:30 pm until 10:30 pm. Then I'm awake until 8 am again, sleep until noon, and stay up til 8pm or take a nap and stay up later, maybe 10 or 12, then Monday it's a normal day again. What's a good way to space the meals those 2 days?? I thought I could just not eat overnight, since I'd be sleeping anyway the other nights, but it didn't work out too well.

Why does the time say it's after 7:30 when it's 5:30 ish where I am?

Working the graveyard shift is a challenge. I used to do that, as well. The food spacing is the same, though. You still maintain the guidelines of not going any longer than 4-6 hours without eating. I would plan on taking along one good zone meal, and then maybe 1-2 snacks to get you through. Maybe that would help to keep you out of the cookies!

so would I be eating more meals? Already ate 3 during the day Friday, then overnight would be alot more food? I guess on Saturday, with sleeping, it would work out different than Friday. I'll have to see how it goes - take one Zone meal and 2 snacks. That might do the trick.

CJ, take care not to go over you block recommendation in every 24 (or so) hour period. In otherwords, you'll still follow Zone rules for timing, and follow your protein/block recommendation, but you'll be sleeping and eating at different times on different days.

Sue, thanks for the tip. Yeah, will track food from say 6am til 6am the next day. I don't want to be eating 2 days worth of meals in one!

CK,thanks for the suggestion about what to eat on graveyard! Tonight I had a zone snack, then a zone meal 2 1/2 hours later. So far, so good - I resisted the big plates of lasagna in the frig! And I love pasta, it is my weakness.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
