:? I was on the zone and had wonderful results but had a problem maintaing my weight(I'm 6'2" and would like to weight between 150-160 lbs). When I got to 140 lbs I had to eat more carbs to gain the weight back and then I began to eat non-zone meals and now I am having problems with joint stiffness and want to get back to a zone diet but I don't want to lose weight. Anyone have similar problems? Did you solve them? Don

I started the Zone at 155 and 14% fat, with no intention of losing much weight --I just wanted to gain health. From reading stuff on this site, and the books, I got the erroneous impression that if I ate the recommended amount of blocks, then my weight would automatically stop at the ideal place. When I hit 138 and 7% fat, I knew I did not have something right. I experimented with more carbs (made me feel bad), more blocks (stopped the loss, but I did not feel quite as good, and I worried about too much protein in the diet), and finally more mono-saturated fat. The fat is the right answer. Dr. Sears stated it was the way to go, but it is not mentioned in very many places, so I missed this point at first. FAT IS YOUR CONTROL ROD TO ADJUST YOUR WEIGHT TO WHAT EVER YOU WANT IT TO BE. I have to eat 3P/3C with 30g of fat per meal. I need that much fat to keep my weight up to where it should be. You may not need that much extra fat. Use the body fat calculator in the tools section of this site to determine your protein/carb block needs. Then use extra fat at your discretion to maintain your desired weight (body fat %). If you drop more than you want, add more fat until your weight stabilizes. The extra fat is your gas pedal to add or subtract body fat to your self as you desire. You are in control. That is what the Zone is all about with respect to weight management. Just make sure that you use mono-saturated fat like extra virgin Olive oil or Pecans, Almonds or other favorable fat sources for the extra fat. And if you need a lot, spread it out evenly with your meals and snacks. Are you also taking fish oil?

Thanks Dennis for your input about the extra fat. I was not aware that I could safely eat that much extra fat. I will look into the calculator you mentioned. I'm not taking any fish oil because I had a problem wiht internal bleeding and after discussing it with my Cardiologist we decided that since fish oil will thin out the blood I should not use it. I was also taking aspirin which I have stopped using. Maybe I will at some time in the future try fish oil. :D
