The stretching is a great idea! LOL-I don't like to walk with my husband, he is a foot taller than I am, and his legs can cover much more area than mine can!

Thanks for the compliment on my picture! It was taken at a bowling tournament, and we had our entire team all lined up there (I cut them out).

Congrats on lowering your BP, Margaret! Sounds like several people are noticing your body is getting smaller. YEA!

I'm glad to hear you are stretching. I can't stress enough the importance of that. Most people don't think of stretching before/after walking, but it's important to avoid injuries like shin splints. I'm sure your son and daughter have told you never ever exercise without warm-up and cool-down stretches. I happen to have learned that lesson the hard way. Once and only once I didn't stretch before exercising. I was late to my racquetball game, so I didn't take the time to do warm-up stretches. On my very first dive for the ball I went down and didn't get back up. I ruptured my calf muscle (missed the achilles tendon by less than 1/4"). My ortho told me I needed surgery because the tear was so severe. I tell ya, when I do something, I really do it up good! LOL! Since I was against surgery unless absolutely necessary, he said we could try the cast route to see if it would heal on its own (he said he doubted it would heal and that I'd probably still need surgery). I chose the cast method. It took 12 weeks (six different non-walking casts) to heal and a few months of physical therapy, but it worked! You are going to laugh at this. I'm so paranoid now that I won't even get out of bed in the morning without stretching! LOL!

Margaret, please, just be careful of shin splints ... they can totally put you out of commission. After stretching, ease into this hour of walking and gradually increase your pace ... your body will rebel if pushed too hard too fast. We don't want that! Putting a treadmill in front of a TV is a great idea ... your hour of walking will be done before you know it! I used to try to read while on the treadmill, but I couldn't do it so TV was my solution. Just a hint: if you can, try to get a treadmill that has pre-programmed workouts ... they keep you challenged. Also, something I liked better than the treadmill was an elliptical machine. I felt like I got a better workout, plus it was fun to me. Just a thought. Okay, I'm done. I bet you thought I'd never shut up! LOL!

A couple more tips about stretching before a walk. It's best to warm up those muscles a little before you stretch them. You'd first walk at a slow pace for 5 min or so, then stretch, then pick up the walking pace. It's best to hold the stretch, no bouncing! When your walk is over, do your body a favor by including a cool down (slower walk) for at least 5 min, and then stretch again. Those last stretches are very important. Exercise shortens the muscles and the final stetches lengthen them again. (Hi Karen!)

Hi, Sue! Very good point about warming up the muscles a bit before stretching. Good way to pull/snap a muscle if you don't. I don't know of any warm up exercises that I can do in bed before I stretch in the morning. Do you? I haven't had a problem doing it for years, but sure a shooting, since I'm thinking about, it's bound to happen! LOL!

I'd suggest doing some very gentle yoga moves prior to stretching in bed every morning. Try things like turning your head from side to side, rotating your ankles, wrists, and fingers, alternating pointing your toes and heels while at the same time engaging (tightening) your calf and thigh muscles, and pointing in the same manner with the balls of your feet. That should warm your muscles up a little bit.
