Hi Gwen!

Congrats to you and your husband on the progress you've both made!

I'd need to know your LBM and body fat% to make suggestions. It would also help if you could post your starting LBM and body fat% from 6 weeks ago. Thanks!

Some tips, your breakfast contains 3P, 1C and contains mostly the wrong type of fat (cheese and egg yolk combined is not the best idea), and it looks like you might be relying on fruit for most of you carb. Adding more veggies will be a big step in the right direction. Make sure you're eating a balanced lunch; it looks short on carb, and it may be missing fat, unless you forgot to mention it.

Hi Sue

According to the calculator, my body fat percentage started at 50% and is still 50%. BUT, Lean Body Mass was 87 and is now down to 83. The exercise is definitely helping.

With regard to fats, I always use salad dressing on my salad - trying not to go overboard - just enough for taste. When I have eggs for breakfast, I scramble them with 1 oz ham, some onion, mushrooms and spinach. I only use about 1/2 oz cheese. The days I have cottage cheese for breakfast, I have about a cup of fruit and some nuts for the fat.

I'm getting tired of fruits & vegetables as carbs, but don't know what else would be OK in the zone. Suggestions?

Well, the basis of the Zone is fruits and vegetables. My guess is that maybe you aren't eating a big enough variety of them?

You can also use beans for your carb blocks (which really helps if you struggle with volume of the veggies). Steel cut oats are a nice option for breakfast cereal. Dairy products like milk and plain yogurt provide a mixed protein/carb block.

In MY Zone diet plan, I would say that I get about 50% veggies, and the balance is made up of fruit, beans, dairy carb, and maybe the steel cut oats on the days that I eat them.

I was not that big, but there is people that is counsulting me that is very big and I would like to offer help and advise on how to follow the zone. Like I've said it before, it is frustrating when people ask about what you do to be healthy and loose weight, but won't listen... if they are not really interested, they should't ask.
Anyhow... I will keep responding to every single person who ask, about the zone diet... it has work miracles on me... so I own this benefits... and if there is only one to hear.. I will pray!
Thank you... have a nice night - day - or evening (depends on what part of the world you are) Bernie

First, welcome to the Zone, Gwen! Congrats to you and your husband on your weight loss! That is GREAT! Just an FYI, sometimes people experience fast weight loss the first week or two; but thereafter, you should only be losing 1 - 1.5 lbs a week ... that's the most fat a body can burn in a week. If you are losing faster than that, then you are losing something other than fat ... most likely you are losing LBM (muscle), which is something you don't want to lose! You want LBM to increase ... not decrease.

Gwen, it appears you are not eating enough carbs. For instance, you say you have some onion, mushrooms and spinach in your omelet. That's delicious, but you have to have a lot of each to equal 1 carb block and I'm not sure you are since you are using only 1 whole egg and 1 egg white. For 1 block of carbs it is 1.5 cups onions, mushrooms is 4 cups and spinach is 3.5 cups cooked or 20 cups fresh! Also, 1/2 cup fruit is fine for 1 block if it is blueberries, grapes or canned peaches (in water); but if you are having strawberries or raspberries, you need 1 cup to equal 1 block. On days you have cottage cheese and 1 cup fruit, that is not enough carbs. Then for lunch you have a salad for your carbs. I don't know what you put in your salad, but lettuce is almost a freebie since you would need to eat 10 cups of lettuce or 2 heads of iceberg for 1 block. We basically don't count lettuce. The only countable carb I see for lunch is fruit.

My suggestion, Gwen, is to add a lot more veggies ... you are already eating enough fruit for the day. If they are too much for you to eat volume-wise, you can incorporate black beans or kidney beans, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, salsa, chick peas, lentils, steel-cut oats, etc. Or, do like CC said and have dairy products that count as both protein and carb. It all helps! Just have fun with it and mix it up.

I said this in another post, but it bears repeating. Keep in mind that you need to eat enough to lose weight. I found this interesting on Biggest Loser. Mike (contestant) wasn't losing as fast as Bob (trainer) thought he should be. Mike was skimping on his meals, thinking he would lose faster. After a few weeks, Bob pulled Mike aside and told him to up his caloric intake and not to skimp. Walla! That is when Mike really started losing weight! Bob explained that not eating enough slowed Mike's metabolism ... it put Mike's body in starvation mode and it was holding on to the fat.

Another note: you have to eat fat to lose fat. If you eat low-fat or fat-free protein, make you sure you double your fat intake for that meal/snack. This is because it is assumed half of your fat will come from the protein for that meal/snack; but if it is low-fat or fat-free, it doesn't. Your breakfast is fine ... you have enough fat, but I don't know what your protein is for the other meals.

Gwen, I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please let us know ... we are happy to help. Keep us posted on your progress!

Happy Zoning!

Hi Gwen!

Thanks for giving me your LBM and body fat% info. It clarifies what's been happing with you. All your info taken together shows that you're not eating enough food, and not only the carb that's mentioned in previous posts. Your plateau has most likely occurred because you body perceives starvation. Your loss of muscle (the LBM decrease) and your meal descriptions both show that you are not eating enough. Your LBM should remain the same or increase. A decrease in LBM indicates you need to increase protein intake. My advice is as follows:

1. Increase to 12 blocks daily. If you weigh 200 pounds or more, increase to 13 blocks instead for now.

2. Eat fully balanced blocks. Right now you are missing C and probably also some F in your meals. Also, if you eat 2 blocks of eggs and 1/2 ounce of cheese, you are only getting 2.5 blocks of P in the meal.

3. Eat enough fat in every meal. You may not be getting enough fat to balance your meals when you eat a little dressing to taste as the only added fat in the meal.
4. An ultra-refined fish oil concentrate will helpful with the weight loss in your situation because of your high body fat%. Your dose of a Zone labs fish oil would be a minimum of 5 grams daily (that’s 2 teaspoons or 8 capsules). Note that fish oil available in health food stores is of lesser quality than an ultra-refined concentrate, and because of the level of contaminants then contain, should not be taken at the dose you require.

A tip, keep in mind that Zone meals are substantial meals. If your meal doesn’t fill the plate, take a second look to see is there's something missing.

Good luck and keep us updated!

You're welcome Bernie! I'm going to have you addicted to watching American TV on the internet! :-)

Egg yolk should be avoided in the for best results becasuse it are rich in AA, the fatty acid that promotes inflammation. Eating egg yolks on a regular basis will work against you. It's best to limit them to infrequent use. Cheese is not the best protein choice becasue of the amount of saturated fat it contains. Only non fat cheese is considered to be a best Zone protein choice. All other cheeses are fair to poor protein choices (refer to the Zone Food Block List in Quick Start; link at right).

Ohh !! I see.... I will start combining my breakfast instead of using eggs every day, with smothies... I made one today, I love it.
It's 1 cup of home made yougurt, 1 cup low fat milk, 1 cup fresh strawberries and 1 scope of protein powder... and walnuts on a side (4) ... it kept me very alert even when there is a week or more that I am putting more than 16 hours at work daily (actually I am here now) not much sleep.
and using egg yolk for 2 days a week instead of 6 as I use to.... I will switch to oaxaca ligh cheese (it's a variety sold were I live) that I read the labels and it is ok on fats...
Thank you Sue... I guess I am leaving for the day... is almost midnight here... (and there must be ghost around here at night... jajajjaja) Regards
and one thing more... I like your new picture.

Hi everyone,

I got out Enter the Zone, The Soy Zone and Anti-Aging zone to reread again. I know I have the Mastering the Zone but can't seem to find it. I am really enjoying reading the Soy zone so I thought I would write a day's meal and see what you think of it. It has changed.

Breakfast 7:30am. Steel cut oatmeal 1/2 cup ; gucamole 2 T and grapes

10:30 Hummus snack with ham pieces

12:30 Strawberry Shake - from zone book

4:00 ham or turkey pieces and gucamole 1 T

7:00 Soy or chicken stir fry

before bed fruit

I am allowed 11 blocks but I am looking for weight loss. If I am suddenly hungry I eat a zone snack I find I like the peanut butter ones the best. I take Dr. Sears weight loss supplements. I take fish oil capsules but not Dr. Sears but will start with his shortly. It was a big step for me to take weight loss supplments because I really don't take any thing like that but feel since I have tried for so long to lose weight and haven't I would do something very different. I bike 6 miles a day!! 7 days a week. I also go to Shapes a local spa and work out at least 3 times a week. No weight loss at all. My BMI is 34. Any suggestions?

Margaret, you're not eating enough food. Your meals are not Zone balanced. You must eat protein, carb and fat for every meal and snack, a minimum of 11 P blocks, 11 C blocks and 11 F blocks every day. Check your stats in the calculator (link at right) to find your block requirement. You must eat your full block requirement each day in order to lose the stored fat.

Your breakfast contains 3C and 2F. Add 3 P blocks and another F block to it

Your lunch should be balanced since you followed a Zone book recipe.

Your 4 pm snack is missing 1C block.

I can't tell you how the dinner is because I do not know the ingredients.

Your bedtime snack is missing 1 P block and 1F block.

The Dr. Sears Zone Weight Loss Support supplement is a green tea supplement. It sounds like you might be confusing it with a weight loss drug, which it is not.

Hi,
Why is it so important to eat the ratio's all the time. Why isn't it a positive thing to eat less if you want to lose weight. I can't believe people are really doing their meals so exact. I assume it is a scientific reason but I just feel that by eating less it should put you in the right direction for losing weight.

Hi Margaret!

The Zone's all about keeping your hormones within a certain range. You do that by eating a certain way. It's not necessary to be exacting to the gram with meals to be in the Zone, but it is necessary to eat enough protein to meet your needs, and to balance it with lots of veggies and fruit plus a little monounsaturated fat. Eating less doesn't necessarily mean you will lose your excess stored fat. You can gain a better understanding by listening to the videos of Dr. Sears on this site, and by reading a Zone book.

Hi Margaret

Was there anything in the books that you have read that you havent agreed with? I mean something that is not making sense to you? You dont have to do your meals exactly - you can just eyeball. The Helpful Tools to the right has a good guide.

The Zone I suppose is scientific but it makes sense to have the protein, carb and fats in one meal as it balances out your insulin levels which means it will keep you from being hungry.

Here is a good example - my husband and I had lunch out today. We had chicken breast with a mushroom sauce and slivers of carrots, cabbage. Not enough carbs. Within 30 mins I was really hungry. I had to have 1/2 a Zone bar to stop my stomach from rumbling - that did the trick. When I just have fruit on its own I get hungry also.

The other thing is - if you eat less you are staving your body and then it goes into starvation mode. Have you lost any weight since you have been eating less?

Hi Sue

How are you? I was looking at your post with squinting eyes. I was thinking I might have given some wrong info to Margaret! ha ha .....

Just had my fish oil and am off to bed. It has been over 30 days since taking 3 teaspoons daily. I weighed myself today and weight hasnt changed - still the same. Should I increase dosage? I am not expecting it to be a miracle cure but just wondering.

Margaret (not from Australia),

I don't think you have to be exact, but you should try to be in the ballpark.

A good Zoner-friend of mine put it in terms of parking a car. You park the car in a zone. You have lines to define your zone. You can park IN the zone, as long as you don't go over the lines.

The "food" zone is the same way. There are definite lines that define IN the Zone and OUT of the Zone.

To be in the Zone, you have to feed your body the amount of protein it needs (the protein prescription). Then, you need to eat in the zone for your carbs, and that can be adjusted according to your hormonal needs. Finally, you need to eat some fat, which is based on your protein and carb needs. Everyone needs a little fat! Not good to short your fat.

It is most important to keep it all in balance, otherwise the carb without the protien and fat will just turn to sugar faster and will spike blood sugar and then insulin levels. Missing one of your 3 main nutrients will not keep your meals hormoonally balanced.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs products show no detectable lead or mercury when tested down to 10ppb, which is 10 times below the Norwegian Medicinal Standard and European Pharmacopoeia Standard limits.

Zone Labs products are three times fresher than the minimum allowed by the Norwegian Medicinal Standard and European Pharmacopoeia Standards (based on average peroxide values).

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.

8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured

Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.

  1. Extraction of fish oil
  2. Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
  3. Absorption – remove heavy metals
  4. Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
  5. Oil conversion to ethyl esters
  6. Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
  7. True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
  8. Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating

Clean Sources

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.

Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.

Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3

Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
