Hey, Margaret-- You can count the fat that you cook with, but sometimes some of it is left in the pan. Not that we have to be anal and measure all of this out, but it might be good to cook with minimal oil and then supplement the fat with the avocado that you love! Yes, agree with the tofu and veggies! Would favor the Zone cereal over the Kashi, but would also favor your above-mentioned breakfast over any cereal. I sometimes eat some yogurt and peanut butter for a bedtime snack, and sometimes I eat blueberries/cottage cheese/almonds. I don't have difficulties falling asleep, so I am not sure I am best at recommending snacks that will help you to sleep. But, a zone snack is definitely recommended before bedtime! |

| What can you eat? Any thing you want, as long as you can stay within your blocks limit and you know how to count 7gr of protein 9gr of carbohydrate and 3 gr of fat in any multiple of 2-3-4 blocks without going over or under too much. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. You can have your sandwich as long as you have two carbs(right bread 12 grain for ex) 2oz of meat, mayo or butter or nuts for fat. The little bit of tomato, lettuce, salsa, mustard are minimal so I count them as free. I enjoy my zone diet I can eat what I want, except the junk food, pizza and pasta, which I could eat if I could stop at a littlle bit only. I know I am in the zone I feel good( not funny like I used to) and I am not hungry and look forward to every meals and snacks. I feel I have mastered the calculator. Perhaps it's the fish oil I take 4 times a day and the polyphenol. I am so grateful to all of you for the help you gave me when I first started two months ago |

| Margaret, I have tried the Naked protein drink and it has a powdered taste. It was powdery drinking it even after shaking it, but if you like that kind of taste, go for it. My husband didn't enjoy it. To make things easy for myself I tend to buy the store brand liquid eggs (All whites or Egg beaters). I take 1/4 cup for 1 egg svg and microwave it. 1 egg = 1 minute (and so on). It's so easy. I do this for breakfast to be fast & even do it for my late afternoon snack & take it with me. I don't think 6 boiled eggs a week is too many as long as that is considered one of your protein blocks at each meal or snack, but remember the egg yolk creates the Arichodonic Acid in your blood, which is what you want to avoid since it is a saturated fat. I keep natural/raw almonds or any other monosaturated nuts with me all the time for my fat. Monosaturated fats are liquid at room temperature, therefore is in your body as well. Women need 21grams of protein (3 blocks); 30 grams of carbs (3 blocks)(whether sugar or not I would count the sugar as a carb for the naked protein drink and add a fat (almonds or cashews-- 3 nuts = 1 block); fat should be about 10 grams (3 blocks). Cottage cheese is a great protein too along with 1% or skim milk (contain both protein and carb, read labels to determine blocks). I love it and it is soo convenient. I keep apples available too, 1 apple = 2 blocks for carbs. hmmmm 1 more carb blocks to go. If you buy grapes, 1/2 cup = 1 block. Wash them and keep them handy so you can bag them and take it with you for your carb blocks. 1 kiwi = 1 carb block. Canned tuna, canned chicken....easy easy, 1 small 3oz can will probably supply you with 21 grams of protein. So anything that would equal to your blocks quickly is what you should think about when it comes to convenience. what items are going to equal my blocks quickly so I don't have to be too creative. Having the list of foods and their blocks is helpful and is in most of The Zone books. Hope this helps and answers your questions. T |

| Went to Medizone.com. It looks good. I live near Sarasota, Fl and so I might check it out. I have another question on weight loss. So I have my breakfast and now want to work on my lunch because I find after eating what I feel is a zone lunch I am still hungry. I generally eat dinner around 7:00pm so what time should I eat lunch? I have a salad of lettuce, tomatoes with 5 pieces of turkey. avocado and 3 saltine crackers. I am ok for about 1.5 hours and then hungry strikes what do you think is best to do? |

Hi, I am looking for advice from everyone. I have been doing pretty well for 2 weeks then yesterday I couldn't stop eating. Why if I really feel I am in the zone most of the time could this happen. I ate a zone bar (official one when I knew I was losing it) but I still couldn't stop eating. Someone brought brownies in and I ate 3 immediately. At least they were small. I had a small party and bought bread for the guests and before I knew it I was eating 3 pieces of bread. Even after the zone bar, the brownies, bread a dinner I was still hungry. I am on weight loss supplements. Any suggestions? |

Hi Margaret Maybe you need to read the Zone books again. You said that you had read them at the start of this thread. Rereading them might help you understand that protein is the thing that is going to keep you from being hungry - that plus some good fats. Brownies, bread are carbs - they spike your sugar levels and will make you very hungry. Just think what they are made from - sugar and flour - both of these things have no nutritional value. If you were in the Zone I am sure that you would pass on these things quite happily. I have to avoid these things as I have health issues that I want to get rid of. I just think they are not worth it. You could have so many nicer things than the unhealthy carbs. Look at the food lists and start making some different interesting snacks that will keep you in the Zone. When you are in the Zone you dont even think about foods that you shouldnt be having .... |

Margaret, without knowing what your food journal says about what you are eating and how you feel after meals, it is really kind of hard to just pick out what the culprit might be. Could have been something that maybe you did the day before that set it off, or maybe your breakfast just didn't cut it (?? something different that you don't normally have). I can say that I generally have a smoothie for breakfast, but if I switch brands of yogurt, I can easily get off track. Or, if I missed my timing during the morning, it can set me up the rest of the day being off track. From your post, it sounds like you are taking weight loss supplements. What are you taking? That could easily be the problem, as well. Anyway, the brownies don't help you get back in the Zone (you probably know that already). But, if you are craving, I can understand how it would be difficult to turn them down. In that moment, I think you have to use a mind over manner approach and work around eating 3 brownies. And, when I have a gathering, I almost NEVER bring something that is unzoned. Like today, I wasn't about to feed everyone donuts or rolls, so I made some hummus deviled eggs, and that went over very well. Everyone here is on a biggest loser diet anyway! |

Margaret:
I am not a Zone expert or anything, but let me pass along a little something I read recently about "falling off the wagon" or cheating on a diet. The author used an analogy. Let's say you are trying to drive from point A to point B. Along the way, one of your tires blows out. Obviously this is a set back that is going to delay you in getting to your destination. So what is the best course of action? Is it to get out of the car and change out the flat tire for a spare, or would you decide, "hell with it, I blew out one of my tires, I might as well puncture the other three." Obviously it would be to accept that you had a set-back and change out the spare and then get back on the road and resume your journey. Yet, when it comes to diet or exercise, so many people, once they have a "tire" blow out, decide to just go "slash the other three tires". I know this advice isn't particularly specific, but it more about the mental/motivational aspects.
Good luck to you. |

Matthew, I agree with Deborah, that is a very helpful post! Of course, if I have a tire blow-out, I am on the phone to DH to get his "you know what" over there to fix it for me"... what kind of dieting pattern is that similar to? LOL! Just kidding. I do agree with your analogy, and I will keep that one stored away for when I have a diet disaster about to happen. |

| Thanks this helps. Thanks Matthew that was nice of you to tell me that I will try to think about it when I have setbacks. I got the steel cut oatmeal yesterday and had it this morning. I am on Dr. Sears weight loss supplements. I really think they have very helpful for me. Haven't lost a pound but I think it might be possible. I am at 34 BMI and trying to get to 30. I also went to Sue's photo's of zone diet stuff and I think that is going to help me a lot. Thanks again my frustration is over. Actually I want to add another supplement and I want it to be a Zone supplement. Would you recommend the Ribose or the Sea Health one? I need energy and weight loss. |

Margaret,
I haven't read the entire thread, so pardon me if you have discussed this elsewhere, but what are you doing for exercise? One of the reasons you may not be seeing the weight loss that you would like to see and feel lethargic is because of lack (proper) exercise.
I am a big proponent of resistance training and interval training (for people who are ready for it) for the "training aspect" and daily hikes to just generally get your body moving more.
BTW, studies have shown high intensity interval training (HIIT) burns 3x as much fat as traditional "cardio" (even though it uses fewer total calories during exercise). Not everyone is ready for HIIT, but it will certainly help you to lose the weight you want if and when you are ready for it. |

Hi Margaret!
Re your question about adding supplements, two excellent choices would be fish oil, either Omega Rx or Eico Rx (your dose would begin at a minimum of 8 capsules daily) and Sea Health Plus. |

Sue, for someone who wants to lose 10 lbs is it right for me to take additional supplements. What would you recommend? I have been on this diet for 6 weeks now. I feel I have only maintained my weight or going to the opposite direction, I'm beginning to see a little chub chub in places esp. my face. I have not exercised a lot lately....not on weekends...personal things are happening in my hubby's life which makes me have to skip the gym. His mother is ill in the hospital. Today I will go...(starting over - A - gain)...I feel like maybe this diet isn't working for me. In your experience, was there ever a time where you thought the same thing or was it a fast loss? I know you've been on it for 15 years. I am not a heavy person, I weight 130 and used to weight 123-125 (up and down). I am 5'5 1/2" tall and have 24% fat, and I am 37 yo ----- As I get older, I feel it's hard to lose it. And around my cycle time, it seems worse because my body slowly plumbs out in all the wrong places, and for my hubby... all the right places . But I just want to hide. I take my fish oil everyday. I take the Natrol brand, it's molleculary distilled from PCBs. I don't quite want to spend the $$ on RX brands. Fish oil is fish oil, right? Even if it is not Dr. Sears brand. Can you share some of your experiences where you lost a little hope? and can you give some advise for me? What other products would you recommend that would help me in the process? I'm sorry if anyone in the room thinks that I am not a big person or have anything to worry about being my size, but I am not feeling good about what I have. I notice the changes in my clothing. My shirts are starting to fit around my belly instead of dropping down to my waste and my butt is flabbier than it used to be. I am also very sensative to carbs so I need to control it by doing the Zone. Anyone here on this forum, I would love to hear your stories as well. Thank you and hope to here from you soon. Matt, I'm trying very hard not to think of those other 3 tires to slash. Thanks everyone. Sue, I like the new picture with the baby. It's great. |

Hi T The thing I would say is not to call the Zone a "diet". The big thing with the Zone is to treat food like a drug. You are putting healthy food into your body so that can only be a good thing. Think of it as a healthy lifestyle. I cant believe I have stuck it out for all these months myself. Years ago I would have given up a long time ago if I hadnt seen any weight loss. I am still struggling to loose. I am carb sensitive and this seems to have escalated over the years. I dont miss bread any more - I might have one slice a week. I dont eat pasta or rice. Dont miss them at all. I can say no to people at work offering me lollies or unhealthy stuff from the bakery. Again this is something I would not have done ages ago. I love the way the Zone makes me clear headed. I am yet to feel that energy like when I did the Zone a few years ago. I cant wait. It was a great feeling. Try not to overthink .... this is what I was doing and it can take up a lot of your energy. Eat healthy, stay active. Hang in there .... |

Thanks T! The baby is my grandson. I spent the past week at my daughter's house having fun with him! I came home a day and a half ago and I miss him already! He's a little sweetie.
Sorry to hear you husband's mother is in the hospital. I wish her a good recovery.
Try to relax about the weight loss thing. The Zone is for people of all shapes and sizes. You should become leaner with time if you stick with the Zone. The Zone is an anti-inflammatory and anti-aging lifestyle that keeps you feeling and performing you best, physically and mentally, and also keeps your body lean. It'll happen for you. Yes, supplements are beneficial regardless of your body fat%.
Try comparing the meals you're eating with those in the Zone menus in the 7 day planners (found in the EATING tab above). It might help you gain some insight.
About your remark "Fish oil is fish oil, right?” not so. Not at all. Molecular distilled fish oil is not the highest quality fish oil available today and it contains too many contaminants, heavy metals and chemicals like PCB’s, flame retardants, etc. (YUCK!), to be safe to ingest, especially at the doses recommended by Barry Sears. If you happened to read about molecular distilled fish oil in the older Zone books, that particular info is outdated due to newer advances in fish oil purification and concentration. The type of fish oil you're taking is the raw material that’s used to produce ultra-refined EPA and DHA concentrates, such as Omega Rx and Eico Rx. The fish oils sold in stores do not meet the criteria to be considered an ultra-refined EPA and DHA concentrate. I tried several other brands of fish oil before taking Omega Rx. I kept switching brands because none of them helped lower my high BP. I had results as soon as I switched to Omega Rx. Within 2 weeks I was completely taken off the 2 high BP meds by my doctor (they hadn't been lowering my high BP, but fish oil did!) That was 8 years ago, and my BP readings remain excellent; the last one a couple of weeks ago was around 106/67.
Here are some references to my info form other threads that will fill you in, in detail, on the question you asked about have I ever lost hope in the Zone. I can honestly say I have always had the utmost confidence in the Zone diet and lifestyle. You’ll see why when you read these other posts. If I was going through a tough time with something I'd simply do the best I could under the circumstances because I knew teh Zeon would help to get me through it. As for teh weigth loss end of it, today I'm still wearing the same size (8) that I've been wearing ever since I lost 100 pounds all those years ago. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have after reading these. My best to you!

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.
8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil
- Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
- Absorption – remove heavy metals
- Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
A serving of canned tuna has 12 times less omega-3’s than
