Hi Margaret,

Less hunger is good. Your'e probably balancing you meals better now, than when you first started.

Soy sauce is a good seasoning for a stir fry.

Hi again,

Sorry to be so piecemeal but it seems to be what I have to do. I am still doing the weight loss supplements and I bought Dr. Sears protein powder. I would prefer chocolate but can live with vanilla. I am doing the diet raspberry Snapple with a scoop of protein powder which is one of his recommended receipes. Can that be a before bedtime drink or should I add some vegetables. I don't like eating food so late at night. Sorry I never realized I was so fincky. Thanks Sue for the suggestion but Soy sauce doesn't do it. I will eat it but not with this receipe.

Margaret- I can't help you on the recipe or the Snapple. What is keeping ME in the zone is lean meats, veggies, fruits, and nuts. If I deviate from that and try to eat stuff I "like" or that "tastes better" or whatever, I end up out of the zone. My suggestion would be to try very hard to "bite the bullet" and stick to just lean meats, veggies, fruits, and nuts for a few days, say 4-5 until you reach the zone. Once you get in the zone you will know it by how AMAZING you feel. Then, maybe you could experiment a little with changes to that basic meal plan to make it more creative by going on how you feel. If you experiment and you still feel energetic and great, write that meal down. If you experiment and go back to being tired or hungry, don't use that meal plan again. I'm sorry I can't be more help to you.

Focus hard on getting in the zone, because once you get that "feeling" you will not want ANYTHING that takes you out of the zone. Also, there is a thread called the accountability thread. People post what they eat every day. You might get some ideas there on what you can eat and stay in the zone. Just an idea. Don't give up. You can make this work.

Hi again,

I finally found the book Mastering the Zone and am re-reading it. It is different than I remember it. This stuff should be scientfic and if I do it correctly I should be able to lose the weight. I think I have to try to eat my food more timely. So I decided to concentrate on doing that. The other problem I have is portion control but each problem at a time. Hope all of you are doing well.

Kathleen, I couldn't agree with you more.

Margaret, I am glad that you are re-reading MTZ. I think each time I pick it up, I gain more perspective. One of the best zone books ever written!

Margaret,
the stirfry sounds like it could have been great, but the salsa was just not the thing...may I suggest some seasonings? I might add a bit of cayenne, garlic, I use a ginger juice, but you could chop up fresh ginger fine, a small splash of umeboshi plum vinegar,(optional), and salt or tamari (wheatfree soy sauce)....AND...
for even more of a boost, add a spoonful almond butter with a little water to thin it. It will make a great sauce.

my check-in is that I had chicken, collards and a third cup of sweet potato for dinner last night and leftover sweet potato (about a fourth cup) with eggs this morning. OK, enough of the less than favorable carbs, its gone now!

Thanks all again,

I am going to buy almond butter the ginger and the plum vinegar. I just bought a bottle of ginger and can use it. I have my info on my cabinet closet but have to say I don't know how you eat such small portions. I am doing really good at breakfast with egg whites, chicken and vegetables as an omelet. Right now I am trying to following the menu items and then just eat as needed. I decided to make the strawberry drink my nighttime snack. Mastering the zone emphasis the need for a nighttime snack so that will be it and it will be right. I also photocopied page 47 in mastering the zone and put it next to my menu items which is the extent of hunger 4 hours after a meal. I am taking my weight loss supplements and Dr. Sears fish oil tablets daily. I noticed the new foods but they are a little expensive but really want to try them. So this time I am hoping I will lose some weight. I would be delighted with 3-4 pounds but my real goal is 10 pounds.

Hi again everyone,

I decided to stay in this forum even though many of the other forums offer a lot of good advice. I bought the plum vinegar, almond butter and also bought macademia butter too. I even did the beef stew receipe from Mastering the Zone. I am getting the knack of this more but still want to ask a couple of questions. Since I am a former weight watcher and am use to using the concept of banking your calories can you do that in this diet also? For example I am starting to eat 6 almonds with many of my meals. Although I can't imagine I don't eat enough fat I thought since everyone here thinks that way I should focus on that. So banking calories allows me to overeat one day and use those calories the next day. I know you shouldn't do it very long but is it acceptable? I did my body measurements once again but nothing has budged. So I know I am not there yet. I guess the more correct receipes you do the better your will get. I am going to try Sue's brownie shake next. Thanks for your help.

It's fine to stay in this thread Margaret. :-)

Macadamia nut butter is delicious! Enjoy it. I like it drizzled over a half cup of plain yogurt; makes an easy 1 block snack. If plain yogurt is too bland for your tastes you can mix a little vanilla flavoring into it.

Banking macronutrients (P, C and F) won't work for the Zone because you need the appropriate balance of P, C and F each time you eat for it to work. Banking total blocks from one day to the next won't work either because it leaves you lacking protein on one day and having too much protein the next day. To stay in the Zone you need to feed you body what it needs every day, spread throughout your waking hours according to Zone timing rules.

Hi again,
Plugging away here but no weight loss. I have been eating in the zone constantly. Something new has developed for me. What I eat is very different from my prior diet of gains, cerals, rice etc and I have a lot of gas. I never had heartburn but I suddenly am having a lot of heartburn . What I have been doing is drinking water and eating some saltines. I don't have a huge stomach but its like my stomach is a ballon with no food in it and there is a lot of pressure and gas. Don't expect you to be doctors but have any of you experienced this? Do you think the Metabolic Digestive support would help here? I have a checkup coming up shortly and so really will be seeing a doctor soon but what do you think?

Margaret, take a good look at what foods you've changed in your diet lately, including new things you began eating around the time when your gastric symptoms first started. That will be helpful infor for you doctor visit, too. If you were brand new to the Zone and not used to eating veggies, that could cause bloating, but you're not new to eating in the Zone at this point in time. One of the benefits of the Zone for many people is that it eliminates heartburn. Keeping a food diary will also be helpful. BTW, saltines will take you away from the Zone. Some ginger tea (plain , no sweeteners added) usually helps with gastric symptoms.

Hi again,

Talked to my doctor and she told me to totally stop diet soda which I can do. No coffee either even decaf which will be hard. I did Sue's brownie batter drink which will be another constant item in my diet. Just wondering can you substitute the banana for another fruit? I mean I have been told not to eat bananas. I even think they are considered unfavorable carbs. I really like the almond extrat gives it a very nice taste. No weight loss yet!! but I feel it is around the corner if I can stay focused. Eating correctly takes a lot of effort but I like it. I don't like to eat a lot of food. I just think getting into the zone mindset takes time because it is different at least from the meat, potatoes, pasta I use to eat. I did read to let yourself have a guilt meal occassionally and mine is subway's small veggie pizza. It is cheap, tasty and filling. Even though I am doing good don't know how people lose so much weight really. At least I want to keep at it and really do it.

You can substitute any carb you want for the banana. Experiment to see what works best for you. The reason I have less than one block of banana in the recipe is precisely because it's unfavorable carb.

Hi again,

How long has it taken most of you to really do this diet? I must be so SLOW since I have no weight loss yet. I wanted some advice so I thought I would write again. First of all have any of you seen the commerical about movie theater food? They said a box of junior mints at the movie has 52 teaspoon of sugar!! That is so much sugar. My point is I would never eat 52 teaspoon of sugar but would definitely eat junior mints. I have been plugging away. I found really good cooked pork at our local grocery store which I have been eating as my protein for lunch. Boars head has a ready made beacon package which I am going to get for my breakfast and wonder how many pieces you eat per week. I am concerned here with health issue not block issue. I have egg whites most days now for breakfast with vegetables. I eat 6 almonds most days with my lunch. So any suggestions for weight loss for me? I do my stawberry shake and now do Sue's Brownie shake. I do Dr. Sears weight loss supplements and my yoga 3 times a week. I bike a lot. Thanks Sue for the suggestion of the ginger tea that has helped. I switched from no diet coke to diet Snapple. Part of my problem I think is I am not constant. Any tips for a food journal? I try to record every day what I eat but just don't seem to be able to do it constantly. Hope you all are well too.

Hi Margaret,

Turkey bacon would be a good Zone choice (a few slices eaten a couple times a week is fine). Regular bacon isn't Zone friendly.

Pork tenerloin with the visible fat trimmed off is fine, but other cuts of pork will take you away from the Zone because of the amount and type of fat they contain.

Here are a couple suggestions to jumpstart your weight loss. Try either one for a couple weeks and you should see some weight loss begin.
1. Follow the womens' 7 day planner on this site.
2. Follow the SuperZone plan.

There's an easy food journal on this site ("Zone Success Journal"). It's in one of the tabs in Quick Start Guide (link at right).

Please keep us updated!

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
