I have read the zone books yet have never really tried to follow the zone diet. I would love to lose weight but just cannot do it. I have always been an emotional eater and would really like to change that. I beleive in all the scientific facts of the zone but have never been able to achieve it. So I thought I would start with breakfast. I eat at around 7:30a.m and have 1/2 cup bran cereal combined with 1.5 cup Cheerios. I use soy milk. I bike 3 miles most days to get to work. I am always hungry around 10:30a.m. So what would you suggest I do? Change my breakfast or eat a snack. I am very big on the Zone strawberry drink which is 2 cups frozen strawberries, low fat yogurt, fat free milk and 1 package Knox gelatin. I could live on it. However, what happens is since I must do the food shopping I run out of the ingredients frequently. I eat zone bars constantly but find if I eat them at 10:30 I am still hungry.

I would say definitely change or alter your breakfast. I usually have the same problem with feeling hungry around 10 or so, but if I eat a breakfast that follows the Zone rules and includes a good amount of protein, then I don't have this problem. The only source of protein in your meal is from the milk and it's probably not that much (I don't know, I don't use soy milk). Try adding a couple egg whites or some cottage cheese with fruit and a smaller portion of cereal. The best thing I have found with using the Zone is that you can create a lot of your own meals if you stick to the basic rules. Try to step out of the box with what you are used to and make each meal worth it but sty within the guidelines of a complete and healthy meal. Good Luck!

Margaret, I would also recommend to change your breakfast. You could probably do the strawberry drink that you referred to, I think that recipe comes from MASTERING THE ZONE.

Zone bars don't work for me, either. That is a shame, because they are pretty convenient!

After my confession of this morning, why should you listen to me? why? Because I am working this diet day in and day out, except for the occasional lapse....and I can get a pretty zoned breakfast most days. I like the eggwhites in a carton. half a cup is 2 blks, then add a slice of jarlsberg light(1 blk) and fold it in omelet style (If you add turmeric to the pan 1st it will be quite yellow) now all you need is your carbs, you've used your fat to cook the egg in (canola oil) so just have half c. of salsa and quarter c. of bl. beans with it or a slice of 100% rye toast....it'll hold you very well.

Thanks for your replies and interest. I am changing some of my eating habits but hope I don't end up gaining weight since I don't do things right. I need to try to make a breakfast around the cereal. I could say I am going to cook an omelet with cheese and ham but I don't have the time to do it. If I eat a small piece of ham in addition to the cereal and fruit do you think it will work better? Stonyfield sells pre-cooked ham pieces which I really like so I could eat a piece of ham than have my cereal with fruit. That would be 3 protein, 4 carbs and 3 fats.

I was reading some past posts and read the Zone Perfect bars are not really Zone bars. Is this true? If this is true does this mean you can only get zone bars from the website? I assume some of you have used the weight loss pills sold by Dr. Sears. Does that change any of your eating in the zone. Is it still the 3/3/4 ratio?

right about the bars...you can only order the real zone bars.
And as for the cereal brkfst...you should try to get it down to 3 carbs, not easy. Maybe no fruit.

Margaret

Have you tried the Zone cereal? It keeps me happy for hours - you just have to add one cup of milk or 1/2 cup yoghurt and it is a complete 3 block meal.

I make smoothies the night before and have it at my desk at work.

I have also made an omelet the night before and had it cold the next day which was ok. Otherwise you could microwave.

I like the idea of making the omelet the night before that is something I really could do. Although it will not be as good as fresh I can live with it. I have a few more questions. Can you put protein power on items and consider it to be eating protein. For example, could I make vegetables and sprinkle it with protein power and consider that a block of protein? If you can how much protein power equals 1 block. Second, if you eat something like I found Panetini toast. The nutritutional facts are 3.5 grams total fat or 5%; saturated fat 1.5grams or 8%, carbs 8gram or 3%; sugar 1 gram and protein 1 gram. Servings per container 8. 70 calories per serving and calories from fat 30. Now if I eat some how can I compute this to blocks. Does anyone know how to do this?

Hello Margaret... (newbie)
zone perfect bars works for me, I use 1/2 a bar with a cup of coffee for snack, but only in emergency time. (When I have to stay overtime at work and had prepare only one snack)... but it balance my insuline for a while, al least until I reach home. I prepare dinner, breakfast lunch at snack at once... every night.
Protein powder... I use it in some vegetables (sautee with oil... spread with powder) .. it change a little the flavor, but works (I don't feel hungre or dizzy or not focus after 3 hrs from that meal).
For my kids, I prepare hot cakes and add protein powder to the mix.... to make them less harmful.
Hope this help.... keep us posted. Bernie

Hi Margaret

To convert protein/carbs/fats into blocks you - divide protein grams by 7 - carbs by 9 - fats by 3.

Hi again,

Thanks for all your help. It does help to talk about your specific problems. My goal is to try to make it so I feel full and am eating the best zone foods I can. I seem to have an insatiable appetite which I am learning to control. I don't binge eat half as much as I use to. I find though that I have to be realistic because not feeling full just makes it worse. For example, I eat a small but good lunch last Friday. I was at my office starving and there were donuts and I ate two because I was just starving. They at least were old fashion ones not much sugar but I couldn't concentrate because I was so hungry. So the point is my big problem is carbs. I have been doing the omelet with eggs, ham, veggies but feel I should add potatoes in the mixture. I am sure you've seen the ones that microwave in 7 minutes. So could I add a potatoe and elminate the toast. Do you think that will work? Do you really all just eat eggs for breakfast all the time? Now I have my strawberry shake, omelet and cereal. Please let me know what you think?

I would suggest black beans and salsa on your omelet. It holds you well. And cheese in it. That makes it yummy and something to enjoy. Or...perhaps another carb instead of beans or potatoes. half a small banana...(not in the omelet)...or even a small serv of sweet potato home fries. (strangely these are less of a glycemic load than white potatoes)
I often have scrambled egg white with a side of steel cut oatmeal sweetened with cinnamon and stevia and drizzled with evoo (olive oil), but this oatmeal takes time to cook, unless you cook it in a tiny crockpot overnight. (which I often do,)

When I do omelets, I sometimes do it with zucchini/onion/mushroom/tomato. Or, I will do it similar to Janet's suggestion, using salsa and black beans.

If you want potatoes, you can just simply limit them to no more than 1/2-1 block of your meal.

Hi Margaret!

For the best results re eliminating hunger (as you called it "feeling full") and staying in the Zone with good Zone foods (the goals you mentioned earlier), get the bread and potatoes out of your breakfast.

Recheck your daily block requirement with the calculator on this site (link at right), and be sure to follow all the Zone rules. Very important will be for you to eat lots of veggies and fruit for you carb and keep the high density carb to 25% or less of all the carb in any given meal. If you still feel hungry after getting your meals more in line with the Zone rules, then judge hunger at 4 hours and adjust accordingly (focused hunger at 4 hours, add 1 C block to every meal; unfocused hunger at 4 hours, drop 1C block from every meal). If you need more info about these hunger adjustments, I'll be happy to help!

You asked about Dr. Sears' WEIGHT LOSS SUPPORT supplement (the green tea supplement). I use it for the many benefits of green tea. It's an excellent product.

If breakfasts are a challenge for you right now, it's fine to drink the Dr. Sears Zone Strawberry shakes. Be sure to mix them with 2% milk to get tithe necessary amount of fat for balance. It you use 1% milk or fat free milk, eat nuts with the shake , or add a spoonful olive oil or one of the Zone liquid fish oils to it for your F blocks.

My breakfasts need to be quick. Most days of the week I have either a smoothie or a Dr Sears Zone shake for breakfast. A couple days a week I'll have a quick omelet or some plain yogurt mixed with Dr. Sears Zone Protein Powder, peanut butter or Zone Olive Oil, and fresh strawberries. There’s a chocolate smoothie recipe in my meal and recipe thread in the Cooking Tips Forum. Also, you can see photos of Zone meals in the album in my signature below. Here are a couple of my favorite quick omelets:

1. 3 egg white omelet cooked in light olive oil with a filling of soy cheese and turkey bacon; complete the meal with black beans mixed in salsa (zap it in the microwave for 35-40 sec) and berries.

2. 4 egg white omelet cooked in olive oil filled with red pepper flavored hummus; complete the meal with berries and nuts.

Have fun with the Zone and keep us updated!

Hi, Bruce!

The Zone is an excellent way to manage our screwed up metabolisms, no matter what stage of life we are in.

You can work in popcorn as a snack, but popcorn is generally an unfavorable carb. You could have 2 cups of "dry" popcorn for a block of carb, balanced with a block of fat and a block of protein.

To use the product that you are describing, you would have to check the nutrition label to figure out the nutrient content of the popcorn that you are using. For a "serving", you would need 9g net carb (take total carb and subtract fiber to get net carbs), 7g protein, and 3g fat.

Popcorn is probably not the best thing to use in the Zone, as it does have a higher glycemic load. So, in terms of "messed up" metabolism, other snacks with lower glycemic load would be better. But, as an occasional treat, I don't see any reason why this can not be enjoyed!

Hope that helps!

Hi bruce,

The Zone is an excellent choice for women during menopause. I was in the Zone before menopause, during and after. I'm now in my 15th year of eating the Zone diet. Your wife might notice she needs to practice stricter adherence to the diet than you do. If she is being treated with any hormonal replacements it will be even more important for her to practice strict adherence to the diet. It is very doable even when practicing stricter adherence.

Popcorn is a high density carb (such as bread, potatoes, etc.) and is not a good choice for a Zone snack. That doesn't mean never eat it, but rather to eat it only very occasionally if you really want to eat it. In the Zone we eat in a way to keep blood sugar on a more even keel, avoiding spiking it, in order to keep insulin levels low. One of the important factors for preventing blood sugar spikes is to eat mostly lower density carb like most veggies and some fruits. The less high density carb you eat (i.e. grain products, potatoes, corn, sweets, etc.), the more successful you'll be with the Zone diet.

I'll be happy to help if you have more questions.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
