Hi Margaret - I'll be praying for your DS and his job. I would think he could apply at colleges around the area if necessary. They are usually looking for what he does for the various sports teams. I hope he gets to stay put though. Glad your smoothie worked today.

I've got a lot of cleaning to get done and a visit with a friend, so I will be getting in some exercise.

Hi sue

Thanks. I am just about to have my snack and then off to bed! Markets tomorrow - love going there to get all the fresh produce. It is so cold here today. Last Saturday it was 104 degrees and today it got down to 68 degrees!! Crazy. Now I need to find my winter clothes!

Housework does make you burn lots of calories. Pity the weekend just flies by and it is taken up with housework ....

Where my son works is where a lot of our Olympians train so it is pretty specialised - I just hope it doesnt happen that he will have to move on.

Hi, Margaret! Just curious ... what does psyllium taste like or is there any flavor? Sounds like it does the trick with keeping you filled up when you have shakes. Yea! That's my only concern when I get my blender and have smoothies for a meal. Of course, it won't be for a while that I need to worry about that! I'm hoping I will get one for my birthday, which is still four months away.

I'll keep my fingers crossed about your son's job. I hope he'll be able to keep it. That is such a worry trying to find another job; but with your son's expertism, I'm sure everyone would love to have him. Even with his specific specialty, I bet they would be knocking on his door. Also, if he does have to find another job, maybe this would be a perfect opportunity for him expand his area of specialty.

I am sooo envious of you getting to go to the farmer's market! How nice is that! How is your garden coming along? I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I'm going to borrow pots for my veggies. We have some Winter Texans (they leave in March) whose pots sit empty in the summer, and they have offered to let me use them. Works for me!

sue, I hope you enjoy your time with your friend! I always enjoy friends coming over. It's a nice time!

Happy Zoning!

Hi sue,
Thankyou for helping me. I'm going to read the letters and see what I can find. I love your signature, too. I'd love to find one for me.

Hi Sue,
I made the chocolate pudding and took it to work today, and wasn't hungry. I'm sure to have more questions, so thankyou too.

Hi Karen

Psyllium is a natural soluble fibre. It has no taste. Some people put a spoonful in a glass of water - drink it and then you have to have another glass of water straight away as it starts swelling. It made the smoothie thicker - plus the psyllium keeps you regular!!

My son has left for a weight lifting competition in Sydney this morning. He is a power lifter - he lifts around 660 pounds. He does lots of training. I went to watch him once and nearly passed out when his girlfriend told me how much he was attempting to lift. I laughed and said - no - tell me really how much it will be. Then I nearly fainted when she said that was the weight. His aim is to the strongest man in the world!

I have 3 grown up children - I am a worrier - but that is what mothers do! My son wont want me worrying ... he has been to Uni to get to where he is but my daughter and I said the same thing as you - think outside the box!!

Fingers crossed for your blender. I use mine nearly every day. Just make sure the motor is strong enough to do ice as sometimes my strawberries are frozen and you want it to be able to cope.

Veggie garden not going so well. Heat was getting up to 104 degrees. Even the people at markets were saying lots of their veggies didnt survive the heat. And now the weather has changed and it is very cold .... I want the last few days of summer to be hot!

Karen - am I being too picky about this site .... the recipes arent all Zoned but hopefully this is being looked at. Then last night I put my measurements in the fat/block calculator and at the top in RED it said my measurements were beyond what it could handle!!!! I am overweight but really ..... If it cant handle my measurments then maybe I will suggest that they put the manual calculation that Sue had given me so that others can work it out that way. Otherwise they may just assume that 11 blocks is for them when they should be having a lot more.

Hi Margaret,

They realize the drawbacks of the calculator limits and are working on a way to clarify things better.

Margaret, I am sorry to hear about your garden! It is tough to keep things growing in that extreme heat! And, I am with you about the last days of summer. I always try to cram in a bunch of summer activities into the last week before school starts, and it is really disturbing when the weather doesn't work out. I hope your weather moderates some!

Here, we have had a cold and snowy winter, but over the past week the temps rose and now our beautiful snow is almost gone! Now, I am not happy about that! I would like to have more snow again, since we still have a month to go!

So cool about your son! I hope he makes his goal!

Hi CC

I am not a winter person so would be no good if it were snowing!

My son qualified for the next competition. He could only do the bench press as he had to be careful of his back as he hurt it a week ago. He is very happy. He bench pressed 352 pounds ... I dont want to think about that amount too long - cant imagine it.

Hi, Margaret!

That's a good idea of putting psyllium in your smoothie to make it thicker. I know I'll be putting protein powder in my smoothies, but maybe a little extra fiber to thicken them would be good, too! The blender I want is a KitchenAid. They have corrected the problem they were having with it, and it is now supposed to be very good. I picked this one because you can just set the pitcher on top ... you don't have to disassemble the blade unit. Also, I need a plastic pitcher ... I found out the glass ones are too heavy for me to lift. I can lift the KitchenAid pitcher, but will need to be careful not to fill it too full ... then I won't be able to lift it! LOL!

If there is one thing I have learned in life, it's that mothers will never stop worrying about their children no matter how old they are! LOL! I think that's a good thing ... even as an adult, a child always knows they are loved!

Margaret, I'd be worried, also, if my son were lifting that kind of weight! Oh my word! And what a goal he has! Wouldn't that be something if he achieves it? Wow! You'd really have something to brag about (not that you don't already!). So glad he qualified for the next round.

Sorry to hear about your garden. I know, heat can be horrible on a garden. We have the same problem down here. I should be starting mine in about 2-2.5 months. Maybe earlier depending on the weather. It's a little cooler today, but we have been having warmer than usual weather lately for this time of year. It's been making a few people afraid of what our summer is going to be like.

You are definitely not being too picky about the Zone calculator!!! It should absolutely be able to handle your measurements. I'm glad to read that they are working on it. Hope it doesn't take too long. And I agree, if you need to manually calculate your blocks, then they should have the directions on how to do it listed on this website.

Here's to the last days of summer being warm! BTW, when does autumn start for you?

Happy Zoning!

Hi!

A helpful tip. When eating psyllium seed husk, be sure to drink lots of water.

Hi Karen

I had the smoothie again today - was a good idea about the psyllium. I actually eat it with a spoon as I make it the day before and when I take it out of the fridge it is a lot thicker than when I put it in! I have a glass contrainer for my blender and that is quite heavy. I also make sure I have a good grip on it!

My mum is 85 and she still worries about me!

I will need to look at greenhouses - we have minus temperatures in the winter. Our Autumn will start on 1 March - not long away. Then Winter on 1 June.

I am quite overweight but didnt think that the calculator would reject me!! ha ha ... good that they are working on it. I see that the pictures have come back.

There is a website in Australia by a naturpath who is quite reknowned so thought you might want to have a look. It is www.philalexander.com.au "click on recipes and treatments" There is a lot of info on arthritis - then scroll right down to the bottom and there is a "recommended daily program". I know that you have a few arthritis' but just thought you would like to have a look as it is all natural.

Our spring is March 21, but generally things start to thaw out around the beginning of March.

I didn't realize that you get minus temps in the winter. Is that celcius or fahrenheit?

Sounds like we may get more snow this week--I hope!

Hi CC

We do it by the 1st of the Month. Summer starts 1 December - Autumn 1 March - Winter 1 June - Spring 1 September.

I just did a conversion on the web - we get say minus 4 Celcius which would be around 24.8 Fahrenheit.

OH, ok! At first, I was thinking that you were getting REALLY cold in the winter, but not as bad as I was thinking!

Candice -- Hey, CrossFitter! Good job on your Fran! I know my blocks seem high. I'm built like an offensive lineman but without the "beer" belly. So it's 6'4" 275lbs. :-)

And sure, I'd appreciate any menus that you have. Right now I'm keeping it simple -- low glycemic index (GI) and low glycemic load (GL) foods. The only "refined" grain I eat is slow-cook oatmeal, no breads or refined sugars. It's chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, cod. I use ev olive oil, canola spray. I use walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds and avocado for fats. Pretty much it's a Spartan diet. I cheat sometimes to try new foods. No fast food.

I'd like to try a shake for a meal or two. But I can't seem to find a good recommendation for whey protein powder. Maybe you can point me in the right direction. P.S. The powder needs to be affordable. Some of those prices are ridiculous, especially for glorified cake batter powder! :-)

Thanks for the help!

Will, I think that the Zone protein powder is of pretty decent quality. It isn't too bad as far as price, with autoship.

Otherwise, I used to think Jay Robbs protein powder is decent (although I haven't purchased it lately, so maybe some ingredient changes per post from Sue on another thread).

I have never seen this one, but Goatein is a protein powder from goats milk, can be used by people who can't tolerate cow's milk very well. This one is from Garden Of Life, and I would guess that it's ingredients are fairly pure. I have no idea on its cost.

I agree, that sounds like a scary amount of food. Try doing your calculations over again, maybe there was an error. But, as for food, here is an example of what I would eat for dinner (a 3 block one): I like to use egg white substitutes as my protein, so I take 3/4 of a cup and turn in into a plain omlette with a bit of salt and pepper. Then for my carbs, I like to pick either frozen stir fry mixed veggies (which usually, about a 1/2 a bag equals one block) or a box of frozen sugar snap peas (anything green really), and I'll heat them in a pan with a dash of soy sauce for some flavor (I might add a can of bamboo shoots for some texture). Then for dessert I will slice up a medium sized apple and sprinkle it with cinnamon. I like to eat almonds as my fat with the apple (and I double the fat because the egg white substitutes are fat free). I don't think I could handle more than that amount of food in one sitting. Hopefully your initial calculations were a mistake. Good luck!
