Hi, I did the Zone back in l995 when most people hadn't heard of it. I liked it, but was always hungry and could never get a straight answer on what to do. I noticed the question is addressed in the FAQ section. Thank you!! I always maintained good mental focus even when hungry, so I added another carb block to my meals and hunger is gone!!!! Apparently I was never in the Zone before. Now I sleep like I've been knocked out, but in a good way. I had been having major problems losing any weight, even with a good exercise routine. I've been doing the Zone correctly for my body for a little over a week and I have lost 2 pounds of fat. (lost more, but some was water) I'm very excited and pleased. Here's a question: for one block snacks, would I increase the carbs a little, like a gram or two to keep me in the zone, since I increase for the meals? Another question, I notice that the older zone books vary in their carb block portions than the newer. Is that from more research or is someone not being accurate? I want to do the blocks accurately. Inconsistency annoys me. Thanks all, Lynda

Since fiber does not stimulate insulin, the new block amounts ignore the fiber content. Welcome back!

Tech disagreed with me and even deleted a portion of that post. I would appreciate if you could point me to some "official" Zone literature explaining this. I still believe this was the case (fiber not being subtracted in the earlier block lists), but when questioned by Tech as to where I got this info I searched and was unable to find anything to back it up. Tech didn't actually say I was incorrect, but could find nothing to verify my statement. Thanks, Sue

Either MTZ did not subtract all fiber (ie, perhaps only soluble or insoluble) or wasn't fully updated, but there was definitely references on this site as well (I believe it was the old on-line block guide?) that stated something to the effect of "we have now subtracted all dietary fiber.... allowing for larger volumes of food." or something like that.

Hi, Thanks for the info. Yes, I'm aware of the matereial you posted, but cannot find where I read the the specific statement which spelled out subrtacting fiber. That's what I'm still looking for. I definitley read it on this site. I think it was a few years back, and I am almost sure it originated from Barry Sears or from Tech@ drsears. I'm not questioning the concept and I fully understand the change in block amounts. (And I 'm assuming you knew that. My intent is to find the info to show it to Tech. He was wondering where I saw it. Sue

I just searched site and found this in ask dr sears 5/4/1998 whicj supports more the tech side of the story.... "Subtracting fiber" Dr. Sears, I understand that I need to subtract out the fiber from the carbs on food labels. With Vegetables, the difference in quantity between the zone block charts prepared in the Zone books and what you calculate on the back of a bag of frozen veggies is huge. If you look in the book, you can eat a cup or so. If you read the bag, you can eat the bag or so once you subtract the fiber. How do I handle this? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Cheryl: The data on fiber content in food is constantly changing. In my early books, the Zone food blocks were based on the most current dietary data. My newest book appearing in June is the Complete Book of Zone Food Blocks in which some 12,000 food items are broken down into blocks based on the most current data from the government and food manufacturers. (ETZ says 9g carbs per block, later books say 9g [i:43e14ab5c7]insulin-stimulating [/i:43e14ab5c7]carbs per block) My impression was that was what you were looking for--I'll see if I can search the site as I definitely remember it from here as well. Hope all is well!
