So i know ive only been on this diet going on a week i dont expect a over night weight loss. but i am wondering when to expect to start seeing some changes. im willing to give it six weeks atleast but im still wondering if there is an average time to start seeing some changes. also are still cut oats really better than regular. i have instant oats but they are the new high protein high fiber instant oats. i havent eaten them since ive been zoning but i was wondering if i should or toss them out and replace them with steel cut. i do love my occasional oats. |

I don't know too much about the oats, I guess the steel cut oats are suppose to be better for you. I'm sure someone who eats them will let you know. I don't want them unless they are bad for you, so I don't even bother!! As far as the weight loss, you should see some type of water weight loss in the first two weeks and 1.5 - 2 lbs. every week after that. Since Jan 1st, I have lost 10 lbs, 7 in water weight in the first week, and 3 in the second week. I think as long as you are staying in the zone and exercising, you should see some changes in your weight. Good luck!! |

| I also don't know the official answer, but the steel cut are, in fact more nutritious since they have not been steamrollered....but also they have a lower glycemic index because it takes more to digest them. by the way, they are delicious! I cook mine for 30 minutes. |

| If you are having trouble finding steel cut oats in bulk, check the regular grocery store for McCann's Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal. A lot of them carry it now. |

Felicia, I hope you can find the steel cut oats. If not, I know you can buy them online. Bobs Red Mill is one that sells online as well as in stores. I don't know if McCanns sells online, but you could check. Do you have a Whole Foods store or a natural food store somewhere near you? If you can't find it in a regular grocery store, then I would try looking in these places. I know that my local grocery store doesn't have them, either, so I have to get them from another store that is 20+ miles away. But, it is worth it. |

thanks for the advice on the oatmeal. i do happen to have a health food store 3mins from the grocerey store so i can check that out.
i was wondering if anyone has a problem with the zone bars. it seems that every time i eat one im starving 30min afterwards, i mean sick to my stomach hungery. i dont get it i do half for 1 block snack and then there are days that my meals are smaller blocks due to the amount of time that im up so i eat 1 bar but either way im famished within 30min. i dont get it. im not sure what to do. seeing how on the days i eat them they are pretty much my only option due to being in the car for excess amounts of time and on the go running errands would it be smarter to just skip it and catch up later. i mean ild rather naturally allow myself to get hungery than eat something that makes me feel like im starving. like it hits me all at once not the slow affect when it occurs naturally if this makes any sense to anyone. its been a week for me and i havent lost any weight yet. no water weight. so im kinda confused. im following it to a t and i feel great for most of the time just the BAR days(zone bars) im on a 3 blk and i dont thing i could lower my protein anymore. i already find it low. as i work out 5 days a week for 1 plus hours of weight training and cardio. so i dont know what to do. any advice.
im such a newbie ha... |

Hi Felicia Try having some nuts with your bar. I am the same as you. I seem to get hungry not long after having a Zone bar so I just add the nuts. You shouldnt be going under 11 blocks. This is the minimum for women. Are you having the correct amount of blocks? What are your statistics? Maybe Sue can check these for you. Margaret |

Hi Felicia! The problem might be the brand of Zone bar you're eating. Dr Sears Zone Bars made by Zone Labs, the ones developed by Barry Sears, the patented ones that control hunger, are the ones we're talking about here in the Forums. They are not available in stores. The bars sold in stores with word ZONE on the label, which looks very close to the Dr. Sears Zone logo, are from a company named Zone Perfect. Barry Sears has no affiliation with Zone Perfect and does not endorse their products. Most Zoners I've heard from who have tried Zone Perfect bars are hungry soon after eating them. I've had the same experience myself. Dr Sears has described so called nutrition bars sold in stores as begin “glorified candy bars”. If it’s the Dr Sears Zone Bars (the real Zone bars) that are leaving you hungry, try Margaret's suggestion. Another tip would be to keep a food dairy and look at your entire day's meals. Sometimes after a breakfast and lunch that are slightly less than your required personal balance you will be on your way out of the Zone (heading toward hunger) by the time of the afternoon snack regardless of what you choose for the snack. Another tip, since you are doing weight training, you should use at least the Active level (.8 grams of protein for every pound of LBM) for your preotein requirement and daily block calculations. |

| im eating the right blocks as far as i know. well i mean from calculating everything and the comp. did it to. i keep a journal and the only slip is from the bars everything else is good, ive had one or two meals that ive left the zone with but i tweaked them. but it does seem that my tweaking always is adding more protein. ive always been one to right after a workout drink a protein shake. with 8to 10 oz of skim milk. its whey protein and it only has 4 carbs in it but 21 grams of protein i feel great and full for hours after i drink it so should i cont this or not |

Hi felicia!
To stay in the Zone your actual daily protein intake should be the amount of your daily protein requirement calculation, and shoiuuld be balanced with the appropriate amount of carb and fat to prevent hunger. |

| Felicia, I don't do well with the Zone bars, either. I get hungry sooner after eating them, than if I were to have another FOOD snack. So, I generally only use them when the other options are worse. Like today, for instance, I took the kids to an indoor playground. The food in there is NOTHING good, so I knew that there would not be any appropriate snacks. I kept a bar with me for that "just in case" we were there too long! |

i guess i will have to use them only when need be, but its more often than i would like. being in a car or at a place/friends were i dont have access to dividing out food then ill have to go for a bar. they just suck. well they taste great just the effect they have on me. so far ive lost 5oz. joy joy.... i will say this is the first diet that ive been on that i actually complain that i have to eat sooooooo much... sometimes i feel sick trying to force myself to eat. im so used to 900 to 1200 cal. diets that its crazy. ill give in to the steel oats when i find them. for now im eating my weight management qauker oats. and i add additional protein, norm powder and add. fats. norm peanut butter. so i balance it out and adding every thing barely makes it 3blks. so it will work for now. plus i love it. does any one eat jasmine rice? i ask because my boyfriend is philipno and rice is made with a lot of meals. though we dont cook it often at home we still do and i was wondering on how much i am able to eat. cooked or uncooked what the portions would be. we norm. have it with a stew i know i can eat less of it i just dont want to completely disminish it plus it will offend family when were together.
also i saw that some people were cutting carbs back on their blks. i do that in certain meals and i find that it keeps me in the zone just as well. should i do that to all my meals or just the ones ive tried so far.

| the amount of rice you can have is so small its not worth it. Like one fifth of a cup ? When at relatives house, just take a small serve and then eat only as much as you have to....to not hurt any feelings. And then leave it alone most of the time. Beans are a better choice than rice, when you have a choice. |

| Felicia, I cut back on my carbs by one block, but that is because of a carb sensitivity. If you are not hungry for at least 4 hours after a zoned meal, then that meal is in balance for you. I would stick with the normal zone balance, unless you should happen to notice hunger. |

| cranberrycat, thanks for the advice. the ones that i cut back the carbs on and stay full with is when i eat fruits. instead of 3blks i do 2 and its better than when i do 3blks. when i do 3blks i get hungry faster. so think it is the fruit. but i am pretty carb sens. which sucks. because before i developed hypo-thyroidism i could eat what ever and as many carbs as i wanted and as long as i did norm. light work outs i would stay small. now i try all kinds of diets and bust my butt in the gym 5 days a week and still gain. it sucks. so far ive lost 6 lbs. which is grand for a week but i know its only water weight. so we will see. |

Actually, if you are carb sensitive, that might be a reasonable way to approach it. We don't talk much about the Zone Points system, which was discussed in the Anti-Inflammation Zone. But, if you compare 2 blocks of fruit with 3 blocks of veggies, as per the point system, the point values are very close. That suggests that it would take 3 blocks of veggies to have a similar glycemic effect as 2 blocks of fruit. So, if you are going to eat a meal that is based on fruit for your carbs, I think this would be a wise adjustment, based on your experience with fruits as you posted. As a side note, it is best to eat more veggies and keep fruits to a minimum, especially if you are carb sensitive. Might help to try that out, to see if you will continue to lose some weight/fat. |

Hi All! I am preparing to start the Zone tomorrow, but wanted to shout out regarding the Zone bars. The ones sold in the store have sugar in them, so not a good idea! Also, most of the oatmeal pre paks also have sugar in them. Sugar causes cravings for me, so I use Splenda or another alternative sweetener. The steel oats are very good, but do have a different taste/texture than instant or quick cook oatmeal. I find the steel cut in my local Publix and I believe I recently saw another version by Quaker.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone on the boards.

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
