Hi everyone, I'm new. I'm doing a medically supervised diet in the Tampa Bay, FL area that is based off the zone. My problem is that I hate this diet, so basically I'm doing the whole force myself through it as I've already spent way too much money on this crap that I'll never see again. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it easier to avoid foods that actually taste good (i.e. pasta, potatoes, corn, rice). As this diet basically forbids all of my staple foods. I hate meat, but I've managed to choke down turkey pepperoni. I can't cook... I tried and wasted about $20 worth of ingredients (in one meal out of many failed attempts) and as a college student I don't have money to waste like that. After losing weight does anyone indulge in carbs again to some extent? So yeah, sorry about all the negativity, figured this would be a good place to look for ideas. And reassurement hopefully that I can one day eat a small serving of something that tastes good again. |

Hi! Well, first, I would not recommend force feeding yourself ANYTHING! You could choke, and we don't need that (I can't do the Heimlich on you from here). I really love the variety of foods, without using those foods that you mentioned--pasta, potatoes, corn, rice. Those foods used to be my staple foods, but those foods were also the foods which were leading me right directly towards adult-onset diabetes. If you think about it, those starchy foods really don't taste like much at all! It isn't the taste that we crave. It is the fact that they turn into sugar right after chewing and swallowing, and they actually cause us to crave them soon after eating. I think that if you really work on it, you can go through the food list and find some really tasty veggies that you enjoy eating, and then make up some meals that you don't have to choke down. And, you don't have to eliminate your "favorites", just limit the portion sizes. If you don't like meat, you have other options. I don't think that turkey pepperoni is the best choice (just sounds like it probably has a ton of saturated fat, not to mention nitrates). You can eat egg whites, tofu, cottage cheese and other cheeses, fish, etc. Yogurt and milk are good sources of protein and carb. Again, don't feel as if you have to choke it down, just go through the food list and look for things that you would enjoy and build meals from there. You can find some ideas on eating within a budget from other posts in this forum. It is possible! |

I tried calling the doc's office as they claimed they offered 24/7 (holidays included) assistance. The turkey pepperoni actually has next to no saturated fat and had a flavor other than "eww." lol. I went through the list of foods they suggested and bought a little bit of everything to try to find something. Chicken has got to be one of the nastiest meats known to man kind, the texture, the flavor..ick. I think I'm probably just going to end up quitting the diet. I didn't go on it for health reasons, I went on it because I wanted to wear a smaller jean size and frankly, I'm just not sure it's worth it. I don't know. Sorry for being a downer in this forum. I give you guys credit. |

I'm sorry you feel that way about the Zone diet, Alexandra; but I don't believe continuing to base the majority of your meals on breads, pastas, corn, potatoes, etc., is going to get you into those smaller jeans. This is the second diet I've ever been on. The first one was a gluten-free diet, which I successful on until I started adding gluten-free starches back into my diet. This Zone diet is great with a wide variety of foods to eat if you open your mind up to them. You still can have breads, pastas, corn, potatoes, but only 25% of your carbs can come from them in any given meal. So it's not like you can't have them, you just need to limit them. Alexandra, the Zone diet is a balanced, healthy, nutritional way of eating. If you decide to go on a different diet, please don't make it an unhealthy one. In the long run of it all, you won't feel as good and you may have medical problems because of it down the road. Just remember, your health is the most important thing. Karen |

Actually on the modified version that the doc is using no bread, pasta, corn, carrots, rice, etc. is the rule. I'm supposed to be getting 100% of my "carbs" from vegetables and 2 or less servings of fruit a day. I realize going back to eating a majority of my diet from carbs isn't going to help with wanting to wear a smaller size. I was more so evaluating whether the nasty food was worth the smaller jean size. |

| I am in Pinellas County and one of my friends is doing Dr. Lara's supervised plan that includes B 12 injections, appetite suppressants, etc. Calories are LOW, food choices are extremely limited. It is my understanding that only in her maintenance phase does she then do the Zone program. Is this what you are doing? |

Hi Alexandra!
You migth want to try the Zone diet the way Dr Sears advocated doing it if you really do decide to quit the plan you're doing now. The Zone diet isn't about forcing yourself to eat foods you don't like. You can eat a huge variety of carbs and be very successful. |

I would hate to see you give it up because you don't like the food that you are eating. Perhaps you can give me an idea of the veggies that you DO like, and then will put heads together and come up with some meals. Same with protein. Tell me what you DO like. Is there a reason why you are on a medically supervised diet? In particular, any conditions that would come into play? Because, if you don't have any specific health conditions, you probably don't have to be so strict and rigid with your carbs. You can allow some unfavorable carb in your meal plan, unless there is a specific reason why your doctor doesn't want you to have it. So, please let me know, I would like to help if I am able! |

hi everyone, hope you all enjoyed the holidays!
Alexandra, I don't think you should just give up yet! I have almost completed my 3 week and couldn't be happier! it's a bit overwhelming at first but once you find things you like it gets very easy. I would definitely go through the food list and find what you do like and from there just make your meals. we are all here to help you! tell us what you do eat and I'm sure someone here can make it a zone meal!
for those of you who have been helping me out, I just received my scale back and weighed in and lost 6lbs!!! I am very excited and hope I can keep this up forever!

Dear Alexandra,
I'm a young professional who had to go on the zone because of polycystic ovarian syndrome (which has little to do with ovaries and more to do with a hormone inbalance). In just short of two weeks, I've lost 10 lbs, and I feel so much better than when I was not on the zone. I'm not a big meat eater, and often know I'm eating enough meat at a meal when the last ounce is "choked down". I do a combination of the block and plate method, depending on where I am eating.
I just started one of my best friends who did not cook, at all. I stayed with her for a week, and showed her how to cook very simple things that she really liked, how to spice vegetables and get her protein from the things she liked to eat. I would recommend that you should find a friend or family member who cooks really well, and have them teach you simple recipes you can duplicate. Also, I believe there is a vegetarian version of the zone that relies on soy based products if you prefer those. The book "Zone Meals in Seconds" offers probably 70 no cook recipes, which I find incredibly helpful when I'm tired after work.
To save on your budget, I recommend using frozen fruits and vegetables and buy the fresh vegetables that are on sale. Buy your fresh fruit in bulk (think the 5lb bag of apples and oranges), and think staples, eggs, cheese, milk, and oatmeal. I also utilize the "sold by the pound" salad bar at places like whole foods and central market, to make two salads in one box. Hope this helps! Keep with it! |

Hello again guys, I've managed to stay on the diet, with the help of miracle noodles... lol.
The reason I am on the medically supervised diet is because I wanted to be prescribed appetite suppressants as I've never been successful on any of the dozens other diets I've been on. I had an eating disorder in my teenage years, which I didn't disclose as then they would not prescribe the appetite suppressants. I do not have any health problems (other than hidradenitis suppurativa- basically my apocrine sweat glands never developed and make boils instead of producing sweat.) My blood sugars are fine, my cholesterol is low, so on and so forth.
I am actually doing the Dr. Jay Garcia program, which is based off the zone. The only protein foods on the list that I've found tolerable are fat free beef hot dogs, turkey pepperoni, low-fat cheese sticks, etc. As much as I like vegetables it's a bit of a problem as it's just me and my fiance, and I hate wasting food, and he won't eat most of the vegetables. |

That is excellent, Alexandra! I'm so glad you are able to stay on the Zone diet. Just out of curiosity, what are miracle noodles? Regarding vegetables, that shouldn't be a problem. It's just me and I have yet to have vegetables go bad on me. I buy fresh just enough for a week, and I also buy frozen which I divide up into 1 block servings. Regarding getting better protein, have you tried tofu? I've had it twice now and find that I like it. It takes on the flavor of whatever you are cooking. I've had it in stir fries and it is delicious - would never know it was tofu! Anyway, just a thought. Happy Zoning! Karen |

Alexandra, You might not even need the appetite suppressants in the Zone. The volume of food (if you eat veggies) is very large, and one should stay satieted for 4-6 hours after a zoned meal. Please watch out for those appetite suppressants, because there are drugs in there that can do more harm than good. If you struggle with emotional eating, there are other resources to access. I have some information regarding that (this is something that I am looking into further for myself, as I feel that my overeating is hooked to emotional eating, rather than to fulfill a physical need). Let me know if you need this information. |

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I actually bought some tofu, so we'll see... hopefully I won't burn it.
Miracle Noodles are basically a noodle like substance made purely of soluble fiber. They have less than 1 gram of carbs and 0 everything else. I bought some, and I've actually been impressed. A way to enjoy pesto and tomato sauces without having unneccesary carbs in regular pasta. www.miraclenoodles.com
As for the appetite suppressants, I'm aware of the risks. And, I'm sure a lot of you won't agree with this statement, but at this point, my goal is to lose the weight as quickly as humanly possible. The advantage of using the appetite suppressants is that I can eat the amount of food I would eat to maintain a lower weight at my higher weight. In essence, I'll already be accustomed to eating that amount of food, so that when I stop taking them at a future date my stomach will be used to that amount of food without the pills. I have no idea if that made any sense, I should be getting to bed soon...lol.
On the bright side, as of last Tuesday, I've lost 12 pounds in two weeks. None of which is water weight as I'm drinking significantly more water than I was before. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
