Hello all, I've ordered Toxic Fat from Amazon and the cookbook (Gloria someone). Meantime I have a few questions for you. I have most recently been on another plan. It stressed Cod Liver Oil and Olive oil which I have been taking/using for quite some time now. However, I noticed that toasted sesame seed oil is mentioned on Dr. Sear's site. Is that allowed? the kind I get from the Chinese grocery? I LOVE that stuff, and it was forbidden on the other plan. Also how about dairy products? Cheese? Yogurt? How about other "good fats" like nut oil? (or nuts for that matter?) avocado? coconut oil? Should meats be cooked at lower temperatures? Can they be pan fried? Which meats are allowed? I'm used to chicken, fish, and limited red meat. I try to get it organically grown, including lamb, etc. Beverages: Caffeine? Coffee? Tea? (I was restricted to herbal tea, teeccino, etc before.) I don't know how long it will be before my book gets here, and I don't want to wander too far astray while I'm waiting for my copy of the book. DD |

I haven't read the new book yet, either, but most of your questions are covered in the other books. Dairy is fine in the Zone, the only problem is that some people just don't tolerate dairy very well, and there are some of us who don't do well with milk as a liquid carb. Otherwise, it isn't a problem Yogurt is great in the Zone, I use it all the time (fat free) in my smoothies. Cheese is fine, but too much of it may be a bit too much animal fat, so either go for lowfat or just limit the amount of cheese that you eat. Avocado is an excellent mono-unsaturated fat, as is olive oil and nuts. Lean meat is preferred over red meat, so chix and fish are excellent choices, as is turkey. Red meat does come in extra lean varieties, but I understand that red meat also has a fair amount of AA, no matter how little fat it has. I have never heard of cooking meats at lower temps in the Zone. Preferred ways of cooking meat are "stir fry", baking or broiling. Stay away from caffeine, but feel free to drink decaf coffee, tea, herbal teas, water, sparkling water, etc. Nothing is forbidden in the Zone, but the "unfavorables" should be consumed in moderation. Hi Donna, You'll get the answers when you read Toxic Fat (excellent chpoice of Zone books to start with!). Some additional tips: Choose low fat or fat free dairy for the Zone. Range fed or grass fed beef is recommended for the Zone, when choosing to eat beef, because it conains a better fatty acid profile than coventionally raised beef. The Zone Food Blocks tab in Quick Start Guide (link at right ) will give you lots of info on the typers of foods to choose (it's a guideline; choiced are not limited to those lists). Dr Sears warns against eating cod liver oil for several reasons. Switch to an ultra-refined fish oil concentrate. A little bit of sesame oil is appropriate. Skip the coconut oil. I yuu do a search of this site you'll find info and advice on most every subject you mentioned, even teeccino! Have fun with it! |

Well, I got my book and there is so much information to grasp. I did check my brand of Fish oil (Carlson's) and it has vitamin E, DHA, ALA and some other stuff. Norwegian deep water cod, supposed to be more pure than most. I believe it is one of the better ones, and I will be using it until it is gone. I had not put it in the freezer before, but it makes sense. I have a new bottle, unopened and I will put it in the freezer now. I threw out the one I had been working on, it had been opened for quite some time. Refrigerated, but open too long. Carlson's recommends only keeping an opened bottle for 100 days. As for the Polyphenols, does Acai berry count? I have a bottle of those from before too. I also use unsweetened cranberry juice (diluted) as a beverage (a hold-over from Fat Flush, which I could not stay with the food was so bland and horrible). I am looking forward to having fruit again (it was very limited on Rosedale). But for those times when I need to go to the store, I'd like to use my supplement too. Again, I'll use mine until it runs out and then I'll buy Zone brand. This diet looks sinfully high in carbs to me, after the plan I was on before. There is also less "good" fat, that is avocado, EVOO, etc. Also, I've always avoided nitrates, and this book seems to allow them, turkey bacon, etc. Can that be right? Isn't it harmful? I dearly love canadian bacon, and would relish having it in my diet, but I've avoided it for several years now, due to nitrates. I'm also used to having FAR more vegetables, especially greens than this book seems to include (just looking at the menu plan). I had collards, spinach, or the like with every meal, including breakfast. Are omega 3 egg yolks just as bad as the others? I'm used to those and would probably just skip eggs altogether it if meant whites only. I just despise the white part, only comsuming them if the are completely disguised (scrambled, thorougly mashed with yolks, etc). I hate the waste of throwing the nutritious part away. I mean really, there is nothing other than protein content in whites, so why bother? Might as well have a protein drink. OTOH, doing without eggs is almost no sacrifice for me. I only learned to eat them because they were convenient for breakfast. I feel uncomfortable with grocery chickens. I make a lot of chicken soup, but I'm always fearful of the hormones, antibiotics and so on that farmed chickens have in them. By making my own stock, I feel I'm getting the few that might have escaped me if I hadn't had them. But I cannot find organic chickens in the stores, and most farmers have given it up around here. I have many more questions. But I'll hit you with them later. But just to help me find it, where is the list of Zone allowed evening snacks? I thumbed through and must have missed it. Thanks! Donna |

Glad you got your book! You can check your fish oil on the IFOS website for purity. I can't remember the website address, but if you google "international fish oil standards", you should get it up. I think it might be www.nutrasource.com, but I am not sure. You may want to check the amount of EPA and DHA in the fish oil, and dose it so that it closely matches Zone recommendations. Sometimes, the ratio of EPA to DHA is not the same (this isn't standardized in the industry at all). Rather than buying the supplements, I use a splash of pomegranete juice in my water. Not enough that I have to count it as carb, but it does have some good polyphenols. I am not familiar with acai berry, but I would assume the same thing, that you could use it for polyphenol, but you will have to count the carb if you use enough of it. As I said in my previous post, I don't have the new book. If you read older books, you will notice that Sears writes about some of these concerns that you posted, but that the menu plan sometimes contradicts what his advice is. The cornerstone of the carb block is supposed to be vegetables and fruits. My food guide lists proteins as "best choice", "fair choice" and "poor choice". According to my list, things with nitrates are listed as either fair or poor choices. Again, if these things are listed in the menu plan of that book, then it also is contradictory to what Sears has written in other books. I think that the big concern with eggs is the AA (arachidonic acid) in the yolk. If the egg has been fortified with omega 3, it still doesn't rid itself of the AA. So, I think your best bet would be to limit yourself if using whole eggs. AA may have an effect on your overall picture regarding silent inflammation. Not sure I can help you with your chicken dilemma, but if you can find a source nearby that you are comfortable with, then maybe you can stock up on it. I don't know if you have read the book yet, or just looking at the menu plan to start with. Again, I think that your concerns may be addressed better once you really get into the text of the book (if you haven't done that already). Hi, Great that your copy of "Toxic Fat" arrived! You'll find it very interesting and informative. I consider it a "must read" book for everyone! In regard to your egg yolk question, as you read "Toxic Fat" you'll learn how excess AA increases your levels of inflammation, increases your fat stores, and hinders your ability to lose the excess fat. Having excess AA usually will increase your stores of excess fat as your body tries to surround the AA in each of your fat cells with more fat to prevent it from escaping the fat cells and harming your body. Here are some more answers! ...Carlson's is not the same as the fish oils Dr Sears recommends. ...You'll receive a much greater variety of polyphenols when you switch to Sea Health Plus. ...The Zone may contain more carbs then you're used to eating, but it's not a high carb diet. ...I avoid nitrites in meat too. I buy hormone free range fed meats adn poultry, wild caught fish, etc., and mostly all organic fruits and veggies. The Zone food block lists contain the foods a typical American might usually eat. You can do the Zone a hormone and preservative free, as organic, and as free range as you like. ...The more veggies the better for the Zone! It will be difficult to eat all your carbs from greens and veggies just because of the large volume you'd need to consume, so you may want to add a few denser ones like chick peas, tomato sauce, salsa, etc. ...Dr Sears has written that the Omega 3 egg yolks contain AA, just as regular eggs, and that it's best to avoid the yolks of omega 3 eggs also. Once you read "Toxic Fat" you'll realize the yolks are definitely not the "nutritious part" of the egg! ...It's not necessary to eat chicken, or any animal products for that matter, to be in the Zone (check out "The Soy Zone, the vegetarian version of the Zone). ...Any Zone balanced 1 block snack containing Zone favorable foods is fine at bedtime. Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation.
