Am I the only one who thinks that eating all this food is expensive? I have a family of 6 and I really, really want to switch everyone to this eventually, but just for the 14 year old and I, the cost is high! We went over our 2 week grocerie budget! I'm loosing the weight, so I NEED to stick to it, but does anyone have ANY tips on how to cut these costs? I hate to say it, but our pantry used to be FULL of Hamberger helper, pasta, rice, ect... I could just use a little help with this!

Thank You!

It can be expensive, especially in today's times. The only suggestions I can make are probably things you already do. And that is to purchase meat when it's on sale, divide it into serving sizes and freeze. Also, sometimes you can save money on fruits and vegetables by purchasing frozen items rather than fresh, especially if it's not in season at the time. Is there anywhere in your budget that you could cut some expenses in other areas to allow for the added expense of food?

Also, did you happen to see Oprah this week about the Thriftiest Family in America? Here's a link:

http://www.oprah.com/slideshow/money/20081008_tows_thriftiest/11

On the same show, they also had a woman with tips on how to safe $$ at the grocery store. She was amazing with coupons. She got a $127 grocery bill down to $37 with her coupons. She said she buys 3 Sunday papers to get the extra coupons, plus she gets a lot of them online. Again, with a family of 6, you probably already do a lot of these things. Perhaps others will weigh in with their money-saving tips.

Cheers!

Hi Angela!

My whole family eats in the Zone too. IMO that's the best way!

You'll find your own ways to keep the cost in check. In the meantime here are a few ideas.

Shop the sales and weekly specials. You can find lots of favorable Zone foods BOGO free, 10 for $10, etc., things like family size bags of frozen veggies, spaghetti sauce, and applesauce to name a few. Chicken breasts are sometime BOG2 free in large packages.

Steel cut oats make an excellent breakfast and can be bought from bulk bins for about 49 cents a pound. I recently was helping someone figure out the cost per meal. A family of 6 (3 3-block meals and 3 2-block meals) can eat a breakfast of steel cut oats, protein powder and slivered almonds for between $6 to $7 total.

Shop at warehouses (Sam's, BJ's etc.) for things like fruit, veggies, canned tuna, etc. For fresh veggies, farmer's markets and local farms have some good deals.

Apples are a great fruit to eat in the Zone and are at good prices this time of year.

I really don't have much to add to the suggestions. I, too, feed my family of 5 in the Zone.

You might want to look at it in another way. The extra money that you are spending on feeding yourself and your family in the Zone is really an investment in the future health of you and your family.

I don't want to grow old popping pills to stay alive!

Angela,

All of those ideas are great and I WISH I had a bulk store to buy at (I'm in Ireland and they just aren't!). Even if I did, the fridge and freezer space over here just isn't sufficient. Anyhow - even shopping at the normal grocery stores, what I noticed was the first couple of weeks of zoning were far more expensive than my normal grocery bills but as I got better at tweaking meals and figuring out just what I'd need and what I could stock in cupboards and buy on sale (tuna, chick peas, salsa)), the bills have slowly gone down and this week I'm back to what I was spending pre-zone (about a month and a half later). I'm not buying for a family of 6, but it should come down a bit for you if it's something you want to stick with.

I just realized it's been a month and a half. Time flies. I've never stuck with any sort of eating plan this long... Lol.

Some of these have already been touched on but here is my budget menu items.

Carbs
Walmart, Canned goods
Green Beans; 1 block $.50
Black, Kidney or Garbanzo Beans; 4-6 blocks $.50-.75
Diced Tomatoes; 1 block $.50
Costco, Frozen fruit
Strawberries $.40 block
Mixed berries $.50 block
Henrys, Oats & Veggies
Oats, .50/lb on sale = pennies a block
Green peppers $1/lb on sale
Onions, $.75/lb on sale
Mushrooms $2.29/lb

Protein
Albertsons
Boneless, skinless Chicken breasts, $1.77/lb on sale $.11 per block
Costco
Protein Powder $33 6 lbs. $.12 per block
Deli Ham $.30 block
Eggs, $.28 block

Don't have a budget Fat. Natural Peanut butter, bulk almonds are probably the cheapest. I've never done the math.

What can I make from this list?

Protein shakes. Mixed berries & protein powder with a little ice & water. Also can be used for a frozen treat. After blending put in freezer pop holders or in individual tupperware for a treat.

.60 a block plus fat.

Bean salad with the different beans. Use of different seasonings and mixtures to spice it up and have some variety. 2 cans of Green, 1 can of Kidney & 1 can of garbanzos. This is 12-14 blocks of carbs for around $2.00. Garbanzos & tomatoes. 2 cans of garbanzos 2 cans tomatoes. Sauteed in a pan with garlic & onions. Yummy!! Another 12-14 blocks for a couple dollars.

Egg whites with peppers, onions & black beans. Egg whites with ham.

Chicken breast with tomatoes & onions. Chicken breast with black beans.

Oats with protein powder, peanut butter & 1 block of strawberries. This is still one of my favorites. I had it this morning.

Now if you want to eat seafood & fresh asparagus every day I can get very expensive.

Also some of the staples are a little overwhelming at first. Olive oil and seasonings along with some other Zone friendly codiments gets costly.

Once the kitchen & cupboards have been converted to Zone friendly your grocery bill should start to decrease.

These are just the ones I can think of right now.

I felt the same way at first, but now that I have a system down, I am spending less money. (even less than I used to!) I have to admit that I never bought hamburger helper or boxed foods of any kind, but the amount of meat that I now buy is cut in half, I no longer buy expensive prepackaged yogurts, ice cream and expensive cereals. I buy bulk almonds at Sams and chop them in my food processor. I buy large bags of frozen strawberries and blueberries at Sams when the fresh ones are not on sale. I buy large containers of 2% cottage cheese at Sams and eggbeaters is a lot less there also. The price of avacado is high at the supermarket, but cheaper at Sams. The amount of food we eat now is cut in half, so is the grocery bill. It is just my husband and I, so I can empathize with you, feeding a family is stressful with today's prices.

Thank you all so..... much for all the great tips!!!! I got some protein powder at WalMart, it wasn't expensive at all!!! I also just ordered my first bottle of Omega Rx!! I can't wait for that to get here!! I've lost about 5 lbs so far, and it seems to be staying off!!! Hooray!!!! I haven't been loosing for a week, so I'm taking 1 carb out of my main meals and adding 1 fat!!! I hope it boosts it!!! Anyway, I have the family on it for the most part!! It's the 1 year old that I'm still confused on how to do his food!! I've been giving him all the fruit and veggies he can eat and a little meat, so, we'll see!!! He seems to be very content with it though!! Where still getting through some of the "junk" in the coubard that I don't want to just throw out, so I'm letting the kido's eat them, slowly!!! Like Pancake mix.... co-co puffs, cookies.... ect.... But once there gone, that's it!! Is that too harsh for a bunch of kids????

I think you'll also find, Angela, that if the majority of your grocery shopping is done from the perimeter of the store (produce, meat, dairy), you'll spend less money in the long run. All of that junk in the interior aisles gets expensive, like the junk cereals and convenience items like Hamburger Helper. Good luck! Your kids will be better off with more pure foods. Have fun!

After trying to convert my pantry and shopping habits over to the zone over the past few weeks, I noticed the additional expense for me was the protein powder and the vitamin/omega 3 supplements. Other than that, I just made a few changes in what I was buying, my family is still eating about the same items (but healthier) and so far so go. I haven't tried any of the zone bars or shakes yet. Learning to scan ads for weekly specials and knowing what fruits and veggies are in season is helpful too.

Hi Denise,

A favorite at our house is spaghetti squash topped with sauteed portabello mushrooms, Italian flavored chicken sausage, spaghetti sauce and a drizzle of EVOO. We just had it for dinner tonight!

Also- those of us just beginning the zone can add up all of the McDonalds trips, etc that we took for convenience. I would flinch at the new healthy grocery bill, and then remember how much we spent eating out. Then I think that I am feeding my family healthy foods (I haven't gotten rid of all the things they like. We do have a box or two of cereal in the house for my two boys) and making myself healthier in the long run. I have about 30 pounds to lose and want to get myself out of the danger zone in regards to disease. I figure that I'll save on medical bills in the long run. My mom passed from breast cancer, was heavy, and a type II diabetic, and I DON'T want that to be me. I like the suggestion of shopping the perimeter of the store. It WORKS.

Because of all the protein and fresh vegs and fruit, the Zone is not a cheap diet. If it's a case of either reducing cost or not being able to afford it, there are some compromises you can make for cheaper meals. You may find that the diet is not quiet as effective though, you'll just have to try and see. I put together some examples and instructions on my blog on this very subject here:

Julie,

You're right about the stuff you DON'T spend money on. Just the iced tea and Powerade every now and again adds up to a lot and I've stopped grabbing them when I go in the store (I just keep waterbottles on me all the time).

I just invested in a small chest freezer this weekend. Should help with being able to buy meat on sale and frozen veggies are WAY nicer this time of year since everything is out of season. I've found some yummy frozen berries that are way cheaper too. Should help that grocery bill - now to ignore the other yummy things in the frozen food section: it helps that Ben & Jerry's is about €6 a pint!!!

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
