Hi y'all! Happy to say it's been a very successful induction into the Zone over the last 3 months. Significant reduction in body fat, better energy and mood overall, it's been awesome! Current stats: 5'8", 145lbs, 25.26% body fat, and looking to lose a few more pounds and body fat percentage points. According to the Protein Calculator, my Zone Block and Protein requirements have reduced to now 86.70g, or 12 Protein Blocks. I've followed the Zone Quick Start 7-Day Planner (http://www.zonediet.com/EATING/7DayPlanner/Womens7DayMealPlanner/tabid/141/Default.aspx) pretty religiously, based on 15 Blocks Protein, Carbs, and Fat daily. What's the best way for me to adjust the Blocks per day down? Do I stick to 2 Blocks each per meal, and 1 Block each per snack? Thanks in advance for your suggestions and advice! |

Congrats Christina! I'm a little confused by your post because the woman's planner plus two 1 block snacks a day yields a total of 11 blocks daily. Possibly you've been eating two additional 3 block meals (3P, 3C, 3F) for snacks, instead of 1 block snacks (1P, 1C, 1F). Doing so would result in 15 blocks daily. Snacks that go along with the woman's planner are meant to contain 1 block protein, 1 block carb, and 1 block fat each. For a 12 block day you'd follow the woman's planner and add three 1 block snacks each day. This would mean you'd eat 3 meals containing 3P, 3C, 3F each, and 3 snacks containing 1P, 1C, 1F each. |

Duh, you are correct ... thank you for setting me straight :-)
It would appear that perhaps I haven't been eating enough, which would explain the occasional bouts of hunger during the day.
I've been following the Women's Planner 3 meals daily, plus one snack of 1P, 1C, and 1F in the afternoon. So, it sounds like I should add 2 more snacks of 1P, 1C, and 1F daily, correct?

Hi, LOL You're welcome! Yes, you've been eating 10 blocks daily! You're correct, adding 2 more 1 block snacks will bring you up ot 12. Eat one of those snacks is at bedtime. The bedtime snack is very important. The hunger could very well be from your lack of blocks. If it continues, note whether you're feeling good mental clarity or not, and also look at the carbs you ate in your last meal. Both will give you info about how to adjust to elimiate the hunger. BTW, you and I have almost the same stats (I'm 3/4 inch shorter than you). :-) |

Awesome, will add a snack into the morning mix, in addition to the afternoon and bedtime snacks. Forgot to mention earlier, I'm pretty good about a bedtime snack, usually a string cheese at bedtime, with the occasional addition of a glass (4oz) of red wine. Mental clarity is generally pretty good even when I get hungry, though it is a tad distracting when I'm thinking about all the bad stuff I'd love to be snacking on instead :-) Thank you again so much for your help. It's so encouraging to see your and other folks stats on the forum who have been successful in the Zone! |

| please help me understand why there is so much food in the block list? I really want to do the Zone but I really couldn't eat 4 cups of broccolli at one sitting. How is the best way to put together meals. The meal plans on the website seem not to conform to the building using the list of preferred carbs. Sorry to be so dense. Sharon |

Sharon if you break down the meals in the 7 day planner by looking up each item in a meal on the block list, you'll see how the meals are 3P, 3C and 3F for a female, and 4P, 4C and 4F for a male. The fact that it takes 4 cups of broccoli to yield 9 grams of carb (1 carb block) doesn't mean you must eat a full 4 cups of broccoli in one meal. You simply take the amount of broccoli you want (say it's 1 cup, adn make up the remaining carbs you need in the meal from other carb sources (in this case another 2 3/4 carb blocks to make a 3 block meal). You can simplify it by using the plate dividing method instead of the block method. |

Hi you sound like you have done this awhile. I had a question. When planning your own meals, do you count all protein, carbs and fat, example if you are reading a cereal box Fiber one for example Fat 1 g Carb 25g Fiber 14g Protein 2 g would you add all of these in for protein and fat or do you just take the carbs and does this dies subtract fiber from the carbs like WW or some other eating plans? I notice on the sheet that some of the protein also have some carbs so it keeps me confused. I hope you understand my question. Is there a certain number if a protein, carb or fat is below that, that it is not counted I guess is what I am trying to say, in a very bad way no less. Thanks Elaine |

Hi Elaine, I understand your questions. If you have a packaged item, you'd count everything (P, C and F), with one exception, don't count the protein in plant foods except for soy. If there is not a significant amount of something, say a couple grams of carb, then don't bother to count it. Yes, subtract the fiber from the total carb on the label and count the remainder (the insulin stimulating carb). To make it easier, use the gram counting method only for those items which aren't included on the Zone food block list. In your example, you'd consider that to be 11 grams of insulin stimulating carb, or about 1 carb block. It's unfavorable carb, so you'd use it in very small amounts in the Zone. The easiest way to do the Zone is to use the method where you divide the plate into thirds. If you want more precision, the block method is easier to use than counting every gram of P, C and F. The foods listed as being both protein and carb (like yogurt) contain enough protein and enough carb to provide both the P block and the C block (1/2 cup plain yogurt = 1P block and 1C block). |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
