I just found out from Susan my Zone Bars are not balanced - I was so thrilled to find them - I live in the Republic of Panama and there is a VERY small selection of diet foods - much less a specific diet like the Zone! Oh well - I'll give them away - I only bought three and didn't eat any. I am on day 4 and am feeling good - I've got the food blocks figured out - but what I need help on is the mid afternoon snack - that is the one time of day I am often out of the house. I can't carry around deli turkey or cheese in my handbag - what are you all doing for a portable non perishable snack? If there is an approved bar I can order it from the internet. Carol |

Oh - duh! I found the food section - I will order some bars - but if anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate it.

| I have Zone Perfect bars that I eat, even though they aren't endorsed and I think they are pretty decent. |

Carol, I also eat the Zone Perfect bars and have had good success with them. They are a bit high in sugar and they aren't as good as Dr. Sears' bars, but they aren't as expensive, either.
I've found a new favorite bar, though. I really like the South Beach bars (not all are balanced, some are very close to Zone balanced) and they are 50 cents each here at Wal mart in the USA.
you could also take some beef jerky, an apple and a few nuts as a snack. try and get the nitrate free beef jerky (you might have to mail order it unless you have natural sources nearby. |

| Ditto on the new Sourh Beach - Be careful - not all are 30-40-30. And as previous poster stated, not as god as Dr. Sears - but in a pinch or out of his and need something to take in a hurry. ... |

| Carol, one Zone Labs bar contains 2 balanced blocks of P, C,and F. One half of a bar is a one block snack. 1 1/2 bars would be a 3 block meal. |

Many thanks to all who offered suggestions - I have decided to order the Zone Labs bars - I will start with the multi flavor pack to see which I like best. Now I know it is 1/2 of a bar for a snack or 1 1/2 for a meal - thanks Sue.

| If I eat 1 1/2 bar for a meal and have vegetables or salad on the side would that be exceeding carbs? |

Cliff Bar's Builders Bar is a good choice as well. Do they have those where you are? They have 8 grams of fat, 26 grams of carbs, and 20 grams of protein which is the equivalent of around 3 zone blocks :) Protein/Carb ratio is .77 |

My most often portable snack is low fat yogurt, or home made muffins that are 40:30:30 balanced.. and I can always have it in my handbag.
I don't use any of the processed food, like bars. |

Yoghurt and a few nuts is a good snack.
Also, cheese strings and a satsuma. |

I have several recepies, sweet and salty version of muffins. But measurements are in grams.. I'm from Europe and I must say I use only metric system, hope it will not be a problem for you. My favorite: Sweet Croatian Oat Muffins 4C 8 spoons ( 60 gr) of oat flakes 1C 1/2 apple - chopped 1C 2 tbl. spoons of raisins (or cranberries) 2P 4 eggwhites 3P 6 tbl.spoons of protein powder 1P 1 tbl. spoon of cottage cheese 6F 18 almonds - chopped A dash of cinnamon (or gingerbread spice) , 1/2 t.spoon of cocoa, a dash of salt, 32 drops of Stevy, 1/2 tea spoon of backing powder and a little bit of water, maybe 1/4 of cup. First you add together all dry ingredients: oatflakes, protein powder, salt, backing powder. Then in other bowl you mix up all wet ingredients: cottage cheese, eggwhites, apple.., all except of the raisins and almonds. Then you put together all the ingredients, do not stir too much. Leave for 20 minutes to rest so oat can swell. Put the dough into the muffin mould (the one for 12 muffins) and then sprinkle with the chopped almonds and raisins. Bake some 20 minutes on 180'C.. Now you have 12 muffins and each one is 1/2 a block of C+P+F (you can take 2 pieces for 1 block snack!) |

My favorite salty muffins:
Pizza Muffins
8C 16 tbl.spoons of flour 4C 8 tbl. spoons of oatflakes 2P 2 eggs 2P 2 tbl.spoons of cottage cheese 2P 96gr low fat Gouda cheese 6P 180gr smoked turkey ham 6M 18 olives filled with the red paprika 6M 2 t. spoons of olive oil
oregano, salt, 1 t.spoon of backing powder, 1/2 - 1 cup of water Stir together all dry ingredients flour, oatflakes, spices and salt. In other bowl stir together wet ingredients: eggs, cottage cheese, olive oil, water.. all except of gouda cheese and turkey ham and olives. Chop the gouda cheese, turkey ham and olives. Stir dry and wet ingredients and add the chopped ham and half of chopped gouda cheese. Leave to rest some 20 minutes. Put the dough into the muffin mould (the one for 12 muffins) and then sprinkle with the rest of chopped gouda cheese and chopped olives. Now you have 12 muffins and each one is 1 block of C+P+F (you can take 1 pieces for 1 block snack!) |

Anita, I will let you know...i'm still trying to convert the oat flakes though for the Croatian oat muffins. For 60g i'm coming up with about 12 tsps (these measurements are the same in metric and american), do you think that sounds right? and when you say oat flakes, do you mean rolled oats or the slow cooking oats? thanks! chocolate coconut? sounds heavenly. just the right thing for my sweet tooth. |
