Hi. My name is Angie and I live in Australia. I'm new to all this and have just been put on the Zone system for Hypoglycemia. I too am a 'veggie', although I do eat chicken and fish when my body craves for it. I am still trying to understand the zone, and I am going to start a food diary. My question is, is there anyone out there who is one the zone system NOT to lose weight? I am one of these people. I am under weight and have been most of my life ( due to glycagon, I suspect) I find it extremely hard to gain weight. I was diagnosed with hypo a fews years ago, but never did anything about it. Recently I have been quite ill and decided it was time. Any way, I find that I am still hungry after zone meals, can I eat more during the day? How do I gain weight safely and healthily to reach my goal weight? I hear soooo much on people wanting to lose weight but there are also people who need help to gain weight. Is there anyone out there like me? Look forward to hearing from you Cheers, Angie :)

Hi Angie, Although not a vegetarian, I too want to gain weight. I started the Zone diet about a month ago and I have actually lost about 8 pounds. I would like to know what you have learned in the past month. As I am still new, do not consider me an expert, but this is what I have learned: increase your fat blocks, double or more, fat does not effect insulin but it does carry lots of calories, keep the fat monosaturated (nuts, peanuts, olive oil); increase your total Zone blocks slightly; and add an additional block per day of medium to high glycemic carbs. This last recommendation I read on Anne-Marie’s site (http://www.anne-marie.ca, thanks Anne-Marie). She seams to really be a Zone expert. She got the info from a couple of Q&A's from Ask Dr. Sears. One is an older gentleman who exercises intensely and the other is a younger female doctor who also exercises intensely. In both cases Dr. Sears recommended adding medium and high glycemic carbs. [i:b4d4cb483d] [Sears quote]"Age & exercise" Dear Dr. Sears, Your scales showing age and the amount of exercise stop at 60. I am 77 and in good health and for years have exercised every other day. Normally this consists of 15 machines, moving about 15,000 lbs of iron in 35 minutes. Then I use the tread mill for 15 minutes at steep angles for 100 calories loss. Is this too much for my age? I notice you suggest some workout each day for shorter time periods. I have to drive 40 miles to get in my gym work, so the every other day is best for me. I have been in the Zone for one week now, but find it hard to eat so much stuff on my plate. I know if I cut back, then my calorie intake will fall below 1500 and I don't want that. Thanks, Neale Dear Neale, Your exercise intensity is excellent for your age since it is obvious that you can recover rapidly from one bout of exercise to another. At that level of intensity, I would suggest that you continue to only work out every other day. My suggestion for working out every day would be for individuals doing a much lower level of intensity. One way of making your Zone meals more manageable is to include some favorable higher-density carbohydrates in your meals. These would include legumes (like black beans), whole grains (such as oatmeal or barley), and a slice of whole-grain bread. Their higher carbohydrate density will decrease the volume of food on your plate, but they should not account for more than 25-33% of your total carbohydrates at a meal. "Uncontrollable hunger" Dear Dr. Sears, I am a 37 y.o. female physician who started the Zone diet 2 months ago. I exercise 5 days a week for about 11/2 hrs. (weight training and cardiovascular exercises on alternate days). I weigh 120 lbs and have 20% body fat. I recently had the blood work done you recommend in "The Soy Zone" book. My fasting insulin is 2uIU/ml, triglycerides are 39mg/dl, and HDL is 66mg/dl. My problem is that even when I consume 14 blocks per day I am always hungry. Most of my protein comes from soy and most of my carbohydrates come from vegetables. I have tried withdrawing 1 carbohydrate block and adding an extra fat block with no success. I also tried adding 1 additional carbohydrate block, but I am still hungry with good mental acuity within 2-3 hrs I am taking 9 pills of fish oil per day. Please help me. ivette Dear Ivette: The fact that you have good mental acuity, but are hungry within 2-3 hours indicates that you have to add to some additional carbohydrate to your meals as described in the Zone Tools section (see Balancing Your Hormonal Carburetor). In this case, add one additional block of a high-glycemic carbohydrate like ½ a piece of bread. Your current protein-to-carbohydrate ratio is pushing insulin levels too low. hi Ron Thankyou for the info. I too am only new at the Zone. I must admit that I do have a Dr Sears book but found it confusing with blocks etc, and wasn't that keen on using protein powders etc, so I do not actually use this book. However, I have stuck to the Zone Insulin Diet System that was given to me by my naturopath. It is the same with 40:30:30 ratio, and the palm method for meals. I have a list of foods as well. I find this ok, but I am still hungry within 2hrs of the last meal. I can't seem to find any info on gaining weight or can I have more meals etc. Your info is helpful and I will look at adding more carbs. I am new too and have been on the Zone for nearly 2 mths, how are you going? I have noticed that I have gained 2kg, which is, yyaahhoo, for me!!! I am 54kg now and I am 172cm tall. Hi, Krcron is correct. Dr. Sears recommends to add more monounsaturated fat when one's weight dips too low. Once you gain enough, then go back to your usual number of blocks. Sue

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
