I recently had my yearly check-up. I haven't had my lipids checked for some time, and so I thought it would be prudent to ask for them. I ran into a bit of resistance, though, because my doctor didn't want to order them, as the insurance wouldn't cover them at this time. Why not? Because unless I already have a chronic disease, the lipid panel is considered a screening test, and they don't cover these tests unless they are done at the recommended intervals.

Anyway I offered to pay for them out of pocket, and so I did finally get them done.

Total cholesterol: 135
triglycerides: 77
LDL: 73
HDL: 47

I also had a fasting insulin done earlier this year, and it was around 5.

I was really encouraged by these results. I could improve my TG/HDL ratio, but I really don't see much more flexibility with how I can do this with diet. So, I will be exercising more to work on raising the HDL. Realistically, I don't see my triglycerides going down any further.

Anyway, just sharing so that others can see what the Zone can do!

Without the Zone, my "genes" would be leading me toward high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes. Fortunately, I am not going there!

Hey, Crancat,

I think the exercise will help, as well. But, overall, looks like you do a terrific job of picking/choosing healthy foods, as evidenced by your excellent cholesterol levels!

Thanks, Elias!

I am hoping that I can work on the exercise a bit more during the winter. I just found out that our school will be opening up an hour early for "winter walkers". They are also putting in some new exercise equipment. I am not sure if this equipment will be available for public use, but I am hoping so.

That is a really low cholesterol number. My diet changes have never brought mine down to those numbers. However, I recently got my bloodwork done and I give great credit to daily fish oil over the last 2 years.

Triglyderides then, 98. Now, 51.
HDL then, 56. Now, 71.
LDL then, not so good. Now, still too high.

Good luck with your efforts and exercise program.

Well, Tom, you are not in as bad of shape as you think!

With a TG/HDL ratio like yours, your LDL particles are the "good" LDL. According to Sears, they are the harmless "beachball" particles, and they do not lead to atheroschlerosis, as the "baseball" LDL particles do. If your TG/HDL level were high, then you would need to be concerned. The lower your TG/HDL level, the less concerning your LDL level is.

And, the fish oil could be what is making your LDL appear higher. I believe that the best way to lower it is to continue eating in the Zone. I have never had high cholesterol levels, and so if yours were higher, then you are doing excellent to change things around.

Good Morning CranberryCat...
Just saw this post and am impressed! You are in great shape. At the risk of sounding too intrusive, I am wondering if you do exercise now...and if so..how much?

Thanks

I hate to admit it, but I am not currently exercising. It has been a struggle to keep it worked in to my schedule.

I used to go to Curves, but that fell by the wayside as summer came along. During the summer, I am pretty good at walking, as there is ample daylight well into the evening.

When school started again, I was going to go back to Curves, but I have this overwhelming urge to get home as quickly as I can after work. My oldest daughter is trying her hand at babysitting the younger kids, and I am not comfortable in leaving them home alone for that long. And, with very little daylight later in day, I am not comfortable walking (I don't really have a problem with the cold, though).

However, I have a few ideas. We are getting a Wii, and I may take a look at their workouts. Or, get a new exercise video (I get bored with most of the ones that I have). Or, start walking early mornings at the school (have to get there by 6am, though).

Anyway, if I expect my HDL to rise, I figure that exercise is the missing link for me. So, I do need to come up with something that will work for me.

How much more due you want to improve your TG/HDL ratio..isnt under two Great? You seem to be at 1.6..I don't have my book with me...but 1.6 seems pretty darn good to me. Mine is an embarrasing 2.9 yuck..but I will bring that down shortly...It's mostly because I have cut out 95 percent of my exercise b/c of my herniated disc and auto-mmune flare-up..I use to run 20-30 miles per week..now I run 0 miles per week..and am just doing various floor exercise because even walking is a chore now. AGGHH! I have to keep reminding myself that this is just a hurdle!!!!

I don't have my book with me, either, but I think under 1 is ideal for the Zone. But, I was satisfied that my ratio was good!

Everyone,

There are several ways to increase the HDL level:

Niacin
Aerobic exercise
Weight loss
Decrease transfat
Alcohol 1-2 drinks per day
Eat mono-unsaturated fat: canola oil, avocado, olive oil (doesn't specifically have to be EVOO)
Increase fiber

Hi Cat ( I like that nickname..and from Karen's post I didn't think you would mind)

Thanks for the good info. I have to say that I did not relaize niacin was an 'ingredient' to increasing HDL. I think that is pretty interesting.

Have a good nite.

Deb, I guess I wasn't really aware of it until I found that link, either. I have seen cardiac patients on niacin, but I guess I didn't connect the dots on it (probably something that was taught in school, you expect to see it in practice, but sometimes forget why!).

I can't help but see what you folks think: I've been practicing the Zone diet for over 10 years and I take 3 teaspoons of Zone brand super fish oilper day. I recently had my annual checkup and, of course, the Dr tested my cholesterol. The results are: Total 274, HDL 84 (should be higher than 35, 55 is high range of good), LDL 176, Triglcerides 72, ratio of triglycerides to HDL .86 (should be less than 2), total cholesterol to HDL 3.26 (should be less than 4), LDL to HDl 2.1 (should be less than 2.5), and as an aside my fasting blood sugar was 98 (should be under 100). OK, so I would say I'm ok. Yes, my total cholesterol is high, but my HDL is great, and all my ratios indicate "no problem". However, my doctor always FREAKS over my cholesterol. He insists that I take something to lower it. Initially he put me on Chrestor, but that stuff was literally killing me. Now he has me on Cholesteramine which is a powder that you mix in water and take 3 times a day. Only problem is it causes constipation that is REALLY severe. No amount of fiber manages it. So what do you folks think...should I be doing something to lower my cholesterol?

Hi Frances,

If you haven't already, You should probably do the SIP test (aka AA/EPA test). It will shed some more light on things. Also, Barry Sears recommends that test for individuals on the amount of fish oil you've been taking. You might also check with Wellness Support (link is below in Contact Us) to see which type of Zone FO would be best for a person with your stats.

Since your TRIG/HDL is very good, your elevated LDL is most likely not of the utmost concern. You might also want to ask Wellness Support for more info on that, too. If you want to take something to lower LDL that is not a drug, talk to your doctor about red rice yeast. It acts in the body similar to statins, but without the harmful side effects. One lady I've been helping with the Zone was given red rice yeast by her endocrinologist to help lower LDL and has had excellent results.

Watch the specific fats you use even more closely, and try to eliminate as much Omega 6 as you can, including sesame oil if you're eating it. Even if you're only eating a little bit of omega 6, it could make a difference to eliminate it.

My other thought is to find a doc who is knowledgeable in regard to latest info on the bigger picture in regard to cholesterol, silent inflammation, etc. They're sometimes hard to find, but well worth looking for.

If you are opposed to taking cholesterol lowering medication, I think you could manage this with diet. Make sure you are eating very little animal fat, replacing the animal fat with good sources of monounsaturated fat. Do you eat oats?

I am not recommending that you go against your doctor's advice, but I would seriously consider looking for someone who is more skilled at interpreting cholesterol panels.

Thanks for the feedback. I looked at taking red rice yeast, but since that is where they get statins I didn't start taking it. Maybe the red rice yeast doesn't have the statin side effects because it is not as concentrated as the prescription drugs? The doctor wants my LDL lowered over 70 points and the cardiologist wants it lowered over 100 points...it's rare to lower it that much from taking oats and red rice yeast. Half my carb blocks for the day would be needed for even a significant reduction if I was eating oats. As far as eating animal fats: I eat lean meats, no butter, rarely eggs, 1% milk, mozarella cheese, some 2% cottage cheese,...Personally, I feel my LDL has gone up since I cut back on foods like eggs....the only sesame oil I eat is in the Eico Rx fish oil. I have wanted to take the SIP test but finding a way to do that hasn't been "user friendly." I understand Dr Sears is coming out with a "self test" kit and I asked the Zone consultant to let me know when that is available. I'll contact Wellness Support as you suggest. I appreciate your help!

*"In Defense of Food," you'll read that processors don't make low-fat dairy products just by removing the fat. To restore the texture --- to make the drink "milky" --- they must add stuff, usually powdered milk. Powdered milk contains oxidized cholesterol, said to be worse for your arteries than plain old cholesterol? And that removing the fat makes it harder for your body to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins that make milk a valuable food in the first place?"* review/excerpt of Pollan's book

Michael Polland and others make a pretty good case for eating real foods. Personally, I'm not too concerned about a slightly high LDL or total cholesterol number. Many of those who are, still think that fat (lipids) are the cause of all our health problems. Your HDL/Triglyceride ratio looks good, but I'm not a doctor and don't want to give 'advise'

If you follow the inflammation hypothesis (as I do) you'll eat real foods; grass or algae-fed proteins. Avoid all vegetable oils and all grain products. Anything with a food label longer than 4 ingredients is probably not good for you. If it has to be 'fortified', there is something wrong with it to begin with.

Read as much as you can on the source of our food, as it is also the source of our ill-health.

Actually, what Tom said made me think more on the topic, and I agree with him. Possibly, the culprit is in the processing of the food, rather than eating REAL foods. Avoiding grain products, as we are taught to do in the Zone, is also high on the list.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
