I have rather bad arthritis of the hips due to a congenetal hip defect that needed lots of surgeries when i was a baby.
Now at 43 yrs I have very little catilage on my right hip. I was needing a cane or crutches for a while and looking at possibly undergoing a hip surface replacement, a very dificult and expensive operation.
After I lost weight my condition improved alot, I no longer need a cane and can walk up stairs fine too, so I am glad I didn't go under the knife now!
I still have pain and stiffness some days, but i don't want to take Aleve or any other pain releivers because they might get me out of the zone.
Will the omega Rx help with that?

If you take the right amount of Omega Rx, it will most likely relieve your pain. For you that would be at least 7.5 grams of EPA and DHA daily. The amount of Omega Rx a person would take daily depends on their degree of wellness. It's explained in TOXIC FAT as follows (grams refer to total amount of EPA and DHA combined).

To maintain wellness, 2.5 g/day (4 caps; 1 teaspoon liquid).

For overweight, obesity, type 2 diabetes, or before starting a diet, 5 g/day (8 caps; 2 teaspoons liquid).

For chronic pain, 7.5 g/day (12 caps; 24 microcaps; 3 teaspoons liquid).

For existing neurological conditions 10 g/day (16 caps; 4 teaspoons liquid).

Hi Michael,

I started the zone back in May/June mainly because of osteoarthritis in one hip. I walked with a pronounced limp and couldn't put my full weight on the one leg. It was painful to walk to the end of the driveway to get the paper in the morning. Even had scheduled surgey for a full hip replacement but had second thoughts for various reasons. So I started researching and happened across Dr. Sears and The Zone and decided to give the Zone Diet and OmegaRx fish oil a try first.

It has made an amazing improvement for me. It took a couple months, but I now walk pain free and can again enjoy the sports I love. It's not perfect, however. The range of motion or dexterity in my one hip is not 100% and probably never will be. And I have occasional bouts of stiffness (usually when I do a lot of up and down on hills).

A couple of my recent successes... Like you, I'm relatively young with 3 small boys. We just returned from a week at Disney World where I spent 7 full days speed walking from one end of the park to the other while the kids rode on the rides with Mom (I was the Fast Pass Volunteer, or FPV, for any fellow Disney hobbyists). Was loaded down with backpacks and water bottles most of the time. Never had any pain, limping or other symptoms the whole trip. Easily outlasted the wife and kids each day.

I also coach my boys football team. This weekend the boys challenged me to a contest to see who could balance on one leg the longest. The contest went on for a couple minutes. I used my "bad" leg and outlasted all the other kids. Maybe not a huge accomplishment for most people, but a few months earlier I couldn't stand on that leg at all.

I take 10g (16 capsules) of OmegaRx each morning and am fairly strict about following the Zone Diet. I tried EicoRx but seemed to have problems with the spillover effect and gave it up for now. I should also mention that I've lost 40+ pounds (since spring - including some pre-Zone weight loss) which also helps I'm sure.

The downside is I spend a ridiculous amount of money on Zone products. Although I enjoy many other benefits of being "in The Zone" as well, it's really the improvement in my hip that is most noticeable and has me dedicated to the high dosage of Fish Oil and willing to spend the money. Eventually, I might scale back the dosage but so far it's been worth it. I hope you find similar success with your condition. Good luck!

Hi Sue
I got my omega rx today. I was going to stick with the smallest dose first, otherwise I will empty the jar before the 30 days and wont be sure it is working!
I got the liquid version in case I wanted to try the higher doses. Am I supposed to take it alone, or with food or water? I tried a teaspoon tonite, I thought it was going to taste awful, but it was not bad at all!

Hi Philip
Wow, you had amazing results!
I wasnt sure if it would help because Osteoarthritis is not an imflammatory disorder.
Mabye you should try lowering the dose and see if some soreness comes back.
If it does you will know it is the omega and not just the good diet and weight loss that did it.
I was just as in at least as much pain as you and got lots of relief from my weight loss.
Mabye you will have to take omegarx the rest of your life though if that is the thing that is working. but if it keeps you pain free and you avoid hip replacement, it is surtly worth it!
thanks for sharing your story.

MT, take it with a meal. The thing is, you will not have the desired the result wiht fish oil until you take the amount necessary to address yoru concern. Taking a teaspoon of fish oil to see if it works when you need to be taking a tablespoon to address your pain would be like taking a few baby aspirin baby aspirin for a headache to see if it works when you really need to be taking several times that much aspirin to get rid of the headache.

That makes sense Sue, mabye i will go for the tablespoon and see if it works, means I will have to order another bottle though. well why not, I was planing on buying a bottle before the free offer came anyhow.
Is a tablespoon the same as 3 teaspoons? Why does it say to only use a metal spoon, I have plastic.?? take it all in the morning, or divide it, or take it at night?

sorry about all the questions, i just never figured I would be taking so much, a week ago i wouldn't buy it at all, but the zone diet has worked so good for me that I am more inclined to believe it now, but still have skeptisism, sounds too good to be true, you know. But I will try it.
There isnt any risk of side effects from taking this much is there?

Yes 1 tbsp = 3 tsp.

It may react with some plastics.

Morning or night. Taking it with your evening meal can be helpful for preventing night time snacking. Some people find they don't sleep as well when taking it with dinner, so they take it in the morning.

No need to divide the dose. Take it tall at once. If you want to work up the dose, take 2 tsp daily for the first week and then increase to 3 tsp. at that start of the second week. Give it a 4 weeks on the full dose to see the full result.

No risk, unless you take a prescription blood thinner. In that case, speak with your doctor.

Keep us updated!

OK I am going to take the plunge and try a daily tablespoon for 30 days and see what happens.
that would be 2 bottles a month, at over 120 clams, it needs to have amazing results for me to justify that kind of expence!

I took my first dose this morning. I dont have anymore nighttime munchies, I can barely remember to eat my bedtime zone snack.
Yuck! it tastes ok, but it is kind of gross drinking oil! Can I mix it with my cottage cheese or oatmeal?

Michael,

Sue helped me get started as well and is providing excellent advice. Just to share a little of my experience taking a high dose of OmegaRX fish oil...

- You'll find tips for taking high doses of fish oil in (Dr. Sears') "Toxic Fat" and "The Anti Inflammation Zone". Both excellent reads. For example, suck on some citrus fruit before taking or mix FO with citrus juice.
- I have mixed liquid FO into Dr. Sears' "big brain shake" which did a pretty good job of disguising the taste.
- Capsules are a little cheaper than liquid if you're okay taking a large number of capsules. No taste with the capsules (but see point about SeaHealth Plus). I take 10g every morning in capsule form.
- I also take SeaHealth Plus twice/day. According to Dr. Sears, SHP "helps emulsify the fish oil, thus increasing the absorption and preventing the potential of such gastric complaints."

Hope that helps.

Hi phil
Yes Sue has been most helfull!
I saw those tips in toxic fat, but I would rather just mix it in my breakfast, is that ok to do?

Another question, what kind of arthritis do you have? Is yours more of the inflamatory kind? what condition is your cartilage in?.
I have very little cartilage on my right hip joint, so my bones rub together causing the pain.
I am a bit skeptical fish oil will help that too much since it is not a inflamation illness, but I am going to try, I have nothing to lose, except a little $$...

Michael,

It looks more like .53/g for for the liquid but I was referring to the serving size cost and not breaking it down into milligrams. I used to take the liquid but capsules work better for me and my overall cost is lower. Maybe you're getting more or less EPA/DHA in any given day, however, measuring out milligrams with a tablespoon hardly seemed precise and I always assumed a certain amount of residue or waste in the bottle, blender, bowl, etc.

I have severe osteoarthritis in my right hip. Bad enough to schedule full hip replacement surgery. The damage was too extensive for the newer hip resurfacing surgery. Not sure how much cartilage I had left and don't know enough about osteoarthritis really to even know if there's inflamatory or other types.

Just wanted to share my experience as a fellow sufferer, FWIW. Hope the fish oil works for you in whatever form you take it.

Hi Phil
I know you are, and I thank you for sharing your experience! Sorry for sounding so sceptical, I just have had this for so long, so it sounds too good to be true. But i am going to try it, so i guess i believe you some anyhow.

Hi sue

I tried mixing it in food and it was kinda gross, so I have went back to taking it in the spoon, then popping a strawberry or grape in my mouth right after, works pretty good for me!

Good you've found a way that works for you MT! Dr. Sears has some tips in his books for taking it in liquid form. One of the most effective is to cut the taste with citrus (lemon or lime work well) right after taking it.

Definitely wouldn't mix it with anything. Sucking on a lemon or eating a grape after taking it works best for me as well. I have a very strobg sense of smell and it took me at least 2 weeks to accept the smell (and taste) and the lingering smell on my hands, on a spoon etc. I can just about accept the taste/smell when I swallow a spoonfull, but wouldn't tolerate it in the food or drink - gagging effect guaranteed :-)

I mix mine into my morning smoothie, and honestly I can't detect it at all.

I also detest the taste, and especially the texture! But, mixed into the smoothie, I think the yogurt blends it in well, and it is also easier to digest when taken with dairy products.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
