Hi All,

Is there anybody blogging about Fibromyalgia & back pain and if so...are they in the "Zone"? As for me...I have now been in the "Zone" for 6 weeks and feel 100% better than I have in almost a year.

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 7 months ago after months of blood work for other things. I have had lower lumbar back problems for approximately 12 years now (i.e. (4) discs degenerating, (2) torn discs, (2) buldging, stenosis and arthritis). I don't like taking prescriptions, but have been forced to because of the pain. I only take, what I absolutely need and I hope some day after "Zoning" for a few more months, that I can try to eliminate some of the meds. The current prescritions I'm on are; (1) Feldene daily, (1) Protonix daily, (1) Norco daily, (1) Soma daily, (2) Lyrica daily and (1) Ambian CR daily or as needed. When I started the "Zone" I began taking 6.6 grams of Omega 3, 3.6 grams of DHA/EPA and just a few days ago, I started on 14.4 grams of Omega 3, 7.2 grams of DHA/EPA and I also take a multi-vitamin/mineral/antioxidant along with glucosamine/chondrotin and calcium/vitamin D. YIKES!!! I have been back to exercising at the gym and the office too now for (6) weeks.

Although, I have never been much of a soda drinker or chocolate eater, they are now out of my diet completly, along with refined sugars and caffine. I do still enjoy a decaf, non-fat latte on ocassion...other than that, it's water for me.

Anyway...is there any of you that may have any additional suggestions?

Thanks,

PDPUFF/Leslie

I don't have personal experience with Fibro, but I have known several people who have had good results following the Zone and taking fish oil.

As a nurse, I had also attended a seminar, and there was a doctor who spoke on fibro, specifically on controlling it with an anti-inflammatory diet (ZONE fits that bill), and fish oil. This doctor was able to cut back on many of the medications that her patients were taking.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Cranberrycat...I guess, I will keep on the track that I'm on and when I think I'm ready to try cutting back on my Lyrica, I'll try removing on at a time.

Unfortunately for my back...I don't know if I'll ever be able to go off my pain meds. I'm hoping with more core strengthing it may happen. I do know...I don't want any more spinal injections/epidurals. So far, I think the "Zone" is helping with the inflamation in my spine, just not sure about the nerve endings?

Thanks again for your insight!

I agree, you may not be able to totally get rid of meds, but the "anti-inflammatory" properties of the Zone Diet and the fish oil should make some difference.

I remember that the doctor who spoke basically stressed getting away from processed foods altogether. So, that may also eliminate some of the zone food products, like bars and shakes.

Leslie, you might try submitting a question on the Ask Dr. Sears feature of his other site, drsears.com, or to the wellness support address in Contact Us (link as at the bottom of this page) to asking what his fish oil dose recommendation would be in your specific case (back problems, arthritis and fibromyalgia). He may suggest taking a bit more EPA adn DHA daily than the amount you're taking now. With fish oil, as with drugs, you’re not going to get the best result until you're taking the appropriate amount daily. Also, I'd highly recommend taking either Zone Labs Omega Rx or Eico Rx if you are currently using a different one. Not all fish oils are alike. Prior to taking Omega Rx I took 3 different fish oils to address my concerns. I had literally no results until I tired Zone Labs Omega Rx. When I did, the results were almost immediate. Good luck, and please keep us updated about how you're doing.

Hi CC,

I have eliminated almost all processed food from my diet. The only things of the top of my head that I still eat are; soy breakfast sausage and soy bacon. I have been a Pescatarian (fishy vegetarian) for 15 years, but I have found it a bit limiting while on the "Zone". In the last 2 weeks, I have added chicken/turkey breast meat back into my diet, which has helped with the variety. I don't eat any of the "Zone" food products, because they are processed; I really do prefer to be as natural as possible.

Big thanks,

Les

Hi Sue,

Thanks for joining in...I'm not currently using the "Zone" labs products; I'm on the Trader Darwins (Trader Joe's) supplements. I have not yet written to them and asked for a certificate of "Purity", but plan on it. You could very well be correct in that, I do need to try the Omega Rx or Eico. Thanks for writting and suggesting I contact the drsears.com or using the contact us link.

I will keep you all posted!

Thanks,

Les

Great job on diet! I prefer the same, and have been moving myself away from processed foods. One book that I have read also is suggestive of the fact that those "soy" products are highly processed, and you may consider eliminating them, as well. I know that doesn't help you with your protein options, but just putting that out there as a suggestion.

As for the fish oil, I don't think that the "purity" thing is as huge of an issue as once was thought. There have been recent studies done which suggest that most fish oil products are free from toxins and pollutants.

That being said, the other part to consider is whether or not the TJ fish oil has the same EPA/DHA balance as the Zone fish oil, which is what Sears recommends. I believe it is a 2:1 ratio. You certainly don't have to purchase Zone Labs products, but the ratio may be the more important factor here.

Well...it looks like more egg whites for me in the morning! <LOL> That's ok...I love them with fresh salsa! I really have become a label reader...if it says "sugar" it goes back on the self and I really have stuck to only shopping to the outside isles; there is really something to be said about that!

The TJ Omega-3 supplement is 2:1 on the EPA/DHA' the the FO content is 1200mg, the EPA is 400mg and the DHA is 200mg. It might be worth trying the Omega Rx, just to see if I feel a difference. Right now, I'm only have a bad fibro day if, I push myself to the limit for several days and that is too easy for me to do. I'm really trying hard to find that happy medium; I work as a Sr. Construction Manger all week, take care of 9 dogs (show dogs), work-out 3-4 days a week and then fill in with all the rest of the day to day life. :-) Thank "God" for the gardener and cleaning ladies! <LOL>

Thanks,

Wisconsin!

BTW, I was referring to this physician that I had listened to. Out of coincidence, I pulled out a binder that had her seminar information. Her name was Dr. Selfridge, from UW Hospital, and she also has personal experience having fibromyalgia herself.

Well...I'll ce seeing my cleaning ladies tomorrow, I'll ask if they are up for the commute!

I'll see if I can find anything out on the web from Dr. Selfridge...it could be very insightful!

Thanks,

Hi Leslie,

I'm a newbie also. I have just started the omega rx, joint support, and sea health plus supplements. I have also dealt w back pain and stiffness for about 7 years, and haven't been prescribed anything, but have taken a fair amount of tylenol. I have 7 herniated discs, and have trouble breathing (which is going on 6 years undiagnosed), but it sounds as though you are dealing with a lot more. So, I'm starting these supplements hoping that they may help with internal inflammation as well. In addition to all of this, I just broke my ankle and had to have surgery 2 months ago, hence the joint support. I'm up and movin around now. Just started walking again this week. But, sitting around for 2 months has taken its' toll on my body. So, I'm watching what I eat, and trying to get some help from supplements since I can't participate in all of the athletics I used to do (running, lifting, and martial arts.) Unlike you though, I am taking zone labs supplements. So, I'll let you know if I see any improvements. Good luck!

Leslie stated, "The TJ Omega-3 supplement is 2:1 on the EPA/DHA' the the FO content is 1200mg, the EPA is 400mg and the DHA is 200mg.".

Hi Leslie, I am supposing that you are on the TJ version probably due to cost? One of Dr. Sears criteria, as stated in his books, he stated that one of the criteria for quality was at least 60% Omega-3's EPA/DHA).

TJ's, by the numbers given, is at 50%.

You might want to try iHerb dot com - where you can purchase a 60% Omega-3 (1,000 / 400 / 200) - Dr. Murry, Natural Factors brand. (Natural Factors, RxOmega-3 Factors Pharmaceutical Grade, 120 Softgels - $16.17 + shipping)

I wrote them and asked about quality, a number of years ago, and though tested internally, I was (am) satisfied. (I have their reply/report some where on my computer, if interested.)

Hi John,

THanks for your input! To answer your question about TJ's and cost...It isn't about cost, but more that I shop there weekly and it is for the ease of purchasing; my schedule is so crazy that trying to remember to go online to purchase and have enough of the fish oil is just one more thing added to my busy schedule, but if I need to I will. I would love to have the information from you on purity!

Thanks...Les

I put the results of the reply I received from Natural Favtors (baack in 2002), in another thread, a few days ago - I'll have to find it, or you can do a search for "Natural Factors". BTW - on another thread, some one posted, today, that Whole Foods carries the Natural factors for $18.99 for 120 capsules. (Sadly, no Whole Foods near me in NH.)

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
