I started on the zone diet about a week and a half ago and either I am not doing it correctly or am miss understanding things. I am feeling more hungry and am having more sugar cravings then I have had in months. I am an athlete and thought this program would help me with my performance but instead I find myself reaching for sugar and processed foods more often and feeling hungry. Maybe my old diet works better for me but I really am trying and wanting to make the zone diet fit into my life. Please help or give suggestions. Thanks, Kristi |

| Kristi, to make suggestions on what you could change, we'd need to know what you're doing. If you'd like to post what you eat in a day (specific foods adn amounts), you meal and snack timing, and your LBM and activity level (refer to the calculator, link at right in Helpful Tools), I'll be happy to take a look. |

I don't have all of my information with me since it is at home but I am on a 11 block system eating 3P, 3C, 3F per meal and 1P, 1C, 1F for my snack. My protein intake is supposed to be 78 grams. I am 18% body fat and am not sure about my other information since I don't have my information with me. I am sorry. Today's Menu: Breakfast: 1 cup strawberry, 1 cup raspberries, 1 cup soy milk, 1 scoop whey protein with 21 g of protein. Snack: 8 cherries, 2 egg whites, 3 almonds Lunch: 3 cups spinach, 1 roma tomato, 1/2 onion, 1 cup strawberry, 3 oz chicken breast, balsamic vinaigrette for dressing. Snack: 1/2 grapefruit, 2 egg whites, 3 almonds. Dinner: 1 1/2 cups green beans, 1 glass wine, 4 oz salmon, 1/2 cup grapes.
I hope this helps. Depending on my day depends on when I eat. Some days I wake up at 5 am and other days it is not until 8. I am getting 7 and a half to 8 hours of sleep. I know they discuss that for healthy eating as well. My activity level is usually 2 1/2 hours a day. I run, swim, and do yoga one day and the next weights and bike. I am a marathon runner and triathlete. Not on a professional level or anything.
Also do you recommend me buying the products, such as fish oil and shakes or bars.
Thank you for your help. I hope this helps.

Hi Kristi! From you post, I 'd had the idea that you were planning to give us more info, so I was waiting to see it before I replied. Here's an analysis. Breakfast contains 4P, 3C and is missing fat Morning snack contains 1P, 1C, adn its missing fat because are a fat free protein but didn’t add the fat assumed to be in every Zone protein block (refer to Dr. Sears' fat explanation that follows this meal analysis). Lunch, if that’s cooked spinach you’re ok, if raw spinach, then you’re missing about 1 C block. Snack, contains 1P, 1C and is missing fat for the same reason as the morning snack. Dinner, if that's 4 fl oz of wine you have <3P, 3C and no added fat, though the salmon might contain enough to meet the amount needed for Zone balance. IF you had more than 4 fl oz of wine, then the meal contains too much carb. You're missing a bedtime snack , which is crucial to have in order to prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia and keep your hormones at the right levels as you sleep. Here’s how Dr. Sears explains fat blocks (taken from MASTERING THE ZONE, page 292 and 293). “Why is a fat block only 1.5 grams? Every block of low-fat protein contains approximately 1.5 grams of “hidden fat”. Therefore, by adding one extra fat block (which is defined as 1.5 grams of fat) for each block of low-fat protein, you are actually consuming 3 grams of fat or two blocks (one internal in the protein and one external) for each protein block. If you are using fat-free protein sources, such as isolated protein powders, then you should be adding two blocks of fat to achieve the same ratio. Obviously, if you are eating higher fat protein choices, you would not be adding any extra fat blocks to your meal. Remember that every time you add additional fat blocks to a meal, they should be composed primarily of monounsaturated fat.” Some common fat free proteins eaten on the Zone diet are egg whites, protein powder, some deli-style meats, and some soy products. The info above, especially the fact you snacks and meals too low in fat, explains you hunger, but there may also be additional reasons for your hunger. 11 blocks sounds too low for your activity level. I’d suggest going to at least 12 blocks. It would be a good idea to recalculate your daily protein/block requirement making sure you're using the appropriate activity level. Because of your low body fat % you should also be adding extra fat to meal and snacks to prevent further loss of body fat, and to give you the extra energy you require for you activity level. Try doubling the added fat blocks in meals and snacks, and also make sure you add back the “missing fat” when you eat fat free protein sources. Yes, I highly recommend using Dr. Sears Zone products. I've been using them for years, and I'm been very pleased with them. They're of excellent quality and they really deliver on their promises to keep you in the Zone, not to mention they're extremely convenient when when you need a quick meal or snack, when traveling, etc. Good luck and please keep us updated! |

Sue, Now I'm really confused after reading your reply to Kristi's question. Why don't the almonds count as 1 fat block for her snack? And most soymilk has fat in it, (although she didn't say if it was light or not) so why wouldn't that count as her fat for breakfast? I have been zoning on and off for over a year. This time I am making more progress... cutting back just a little more on carbs, even good ones has helped, and so has adding an extra fish oil capsule. I still can't make it to full 4 to 5 hours though. Am I misunderstanding how to measure fat? I just started reading the AntiInflammation Zone this week and it clarifies a lot! Jill |

Hi Jill,
The almonds in Kristi’s snack contain only half of the fat needed for Zone balance. The low fat protein source would usually provide the other half of the fat. But egg white is fat free, meaning the snack will be too low in fat. This missing fat must be supplied by adding more fat to the meal. The monounsaturated fat blocks we add to meals adn snacks, such as 3 almonds , contain only about 1.5 grams of fat, half of the 3 grams of fat needed for each fully balanced P/C/F block (look closer at the info in the quote from MASTERING THE ZONE that I included in my reply to Kristi). Here's another way to explain it. The block method takes into account that half (1.5 g) of the 3 grams fat needed for balance is hidden in your protein choice. The other half (another 1.5 g) is in the added fat block. For every block of fat free protein you eat you would add 1 extra monounsaturated fat block in order to get the full 3 grams of fat needed in every completely balanced block of P, C and F.
Without knowing which type of soymilk Kristi used (full fat or low fat), the best advice would be to add the usual number of fat blocks to the meal. Dr. Sears' advice is to err on the side of a little extra fat rather than not have enough fat. A little extra fat will enhance your ability to control insulin. Not having enough fat will prevent you from being able to keep your insulin at the low levels needed to be in the Zone.
You might be misunderstanding the fat, or you might need to adjust carb more, or both. Once you have enough fat in your meals, then focus on trying different amounts, densities and combinations of carb, but don't go below 2 blocks of carb to every 3 blocks of protein in a 3 block meal. Also recheck your calculator results to be sure you're eating the correct number of blocks daily for your LBM and activity level.

Sue,
After reading your posts i figure you have some good knowledge with the Zone. I am 24 and an ex college offensive linemen. I started doing these workouts called crossfit which got me into looking up the Zone diet. I am getting into Triathlon's now and want to pursue many more. My training is not the issue it is my eating habits. Would the Zone diet be good for me to fix my nutrition to get me to the peak performance i am striving to achieve? |

Sue,
Thank you for clarifying many of my questions. I now understand fat intake a lot better and know I need to do some more reading on the zone diet. My understanding of your response is that if not enough fat is taken in than your insulin levels are off balance and hunger is more susceptible? Also, am I supposed to be having a snack 3 times a day or just twice but end one right before bed time? I tend to get the most hungry mid morning after breakfast before lunch because my work outs are in the morning so I tend to eat a snack at that time and then one after lunch before dinner (same thing, tend to still be hungry). Maybe with this new information my diet this week will be better. Also, how soon after you started this program did you notice and feel results. I have picked up two of the books but am still confused on some things. As with Ryan's question is this diet going to be the most beneficial to gain peak performance once I end up figuring out my right intake on all C, P, F? I am going to try this week eating 12 zone blocks and see what that does. If you could recommend me picking up some first time products what would they be? Is the OmegaRX better or should I go straight for the OmegaPro? What was the difference you saw in doing this diet, the way you felt and looked? Thank you for answering all of these questions. I really appreciate it.

Yes, Ryan, absolutely. In fact, Barry Sears has worked with many Olympic athletes who are in the Zone. I've got a few suggestions for you to check out here. 1. Do a search for Crossfit; lots of Crossfit Zoners here with diet tips for other Crossfitters. 2. Do a search for all posts by whiteknuckle. He's has had excellent results with the Zone and with Crossfit, and has posted some detailed info about how he’s adjusted his Zone meals to suit his needs. A crucial part of succeeding in the Zone is to follows the guidelines for adjusting it to support your personal needs and responses. 3. Check out the Elite Athlete page in the FITNESS tab above. Lots of info, and also video's of Barry Sears explaining how the Zone supports athletes. |

| You're welcome Kristi! Yes, eat a 3rd snack for now, which will bring you up to a total of 12 blocks. Eating it mid-morning is fine. I'll get back to you on the rest of your qns soon (I'm in a hurry at the moment!) |

Hi Kristi, Reread the books for a better understanding. It might take multiple reads. As you gain more experience, you'll be able to relate better to what you're reading in the Zone books. If you don't eat enough fat, the carbs will enter your blood stream faster and spike you blood sugar. This will cause the body to produce more insulin, which ultimately results in hunger. Your hunger shows you're not in the Zone yet. Once you work all the kinks out and you enter the Zone, you won't be hungry and you'll have tons of energy. I noticed the following results almost right away, during the first couple of days: I felt better. I had been plagued on a daily basis with spacey/jittery feelings and hunger from blood sugar spikes, and they were gone. I hadn't been able to function well in the afternoon for years, due to these hypoglycemic symptoms and all of a sudden I was fine, every day, all day long. It was like having your life back. I began easily losing the excess stored fat. I no longer felt stiff and achy when I'd get out of bed. I had energy to exercise. I stopped feeling bloated. I didn’t have any trouble sticking with the eating plan (no cravings). My results in the long run have been excellent, nothing short of amazing: I lost 100 pounds over the first two years and have kept it off ever since, going from a size 22 to a size 8 (sometimes even a 6). I used to literally feel dragged down by the excess fat and now it's like my body is just there, kind of lightweight and powerful feeling, almost like my body has no weight to it. I have no more hypoglycemic symptoms as long as I stick with Zone balanced dating. I lowered my high BP to normal (my doctor said it was incredible, and took me off the 2 high BP meds I was on; haven't needed them since). Lowered my fasting insulin blood level from the teens to 3. Raised my triglycerides from the 30's to the 70's. Gained about 10-12 LBM over the years. My skin is smooth, soft, looks great. People think I'm much younger than my actual age. It happened again just last week during a conversation with several people, one of them a new acquaintance. This person was relating their health misfortunes, and said to me something like you're too young to know about these things yet. Turns out they're 50 (I'm 57). I could go on, but this experience I had just a few years into the Zone sums it all up. I had my annual mammogram done and the imaging facility called my doctor's office because things didn't add up. They asked if there two patients with the same name, or if some other kind of mix-up might have occurred, because my current images looked like they were from a much younger person than the images I'd had done at the same facility just a year earlier. They were puzzled because as different as the two sets of images seemed, there were a couple indications it could have been the same person. Turned out they were indeed both my images, and my doctor explained to them that I'd lost weight and changed my diet. Proof positive of the anti-aging effects of the Zone diet and lifestyle! Yes to you question about the Zone and athletic performance. To learn more, please refer to my reply to Ryan. My first time product recommendations would be Omega Rx or Eico Rx, Sea Health Plus, Dr. Sears Zone Shakes and Dr. Sears Zone Bars. No, Omega Pro would not be appropriate for you according to the info in your initial post. It contains too much GLA for you needs. Stick with either Omega Rx or Eico Rx. Whether it takes you 12 wks or 12 mos to get the hang of the Zone and see benefits, it'll change your life. Go for it Kristi! |

Thank you so much for your help Sue! I definitely know I will have more questions but started eating 12 blocks today so I will keep you posted on how that goes. I also was curious on if it would be easier if I just followed the exact 7 day meal plan so I get the feel of how it makes me feel and stabilize my insulin? Obviously as we can see I still don't know the blocks and fat intake as well as I should. Your results are amazing and I just want to say congratulations. Sorry about asking more questions again. Also, what does the omegaRX do for your health and exercise? Does it count down on fat is that my understanding?
Thanks, Kristi |

You're welcome Kristi, and thank you!
You'd be the best judge of what's easiest for you. The plate method works great too (in the EATING tab in Quick Start Guide, it's referred to as the Simplified Method. That' the method I used to lose the 100 pounds. I didn't count a gram or a block of anything at all until a few years after I lost all the weight.
Omega Rx impacts your entire body, physically and mentally, and aids in the loss of stored fat. Here are some of the major benefits (copied from the OMEGA-3 tab of this site):
• Helps Regulate Inflammation for Long-Term Wellness • Helps Enhance Joint Dexterity and Recovery • Supports Mental Acuity, Long Term Cognitive Health and Emotional Well Being • Supports a Healthy Heart • Supports Healthy Aging
I'd highly recommend you read TOXIC FAT to get the whole picture.
It's usually considered supplemental and not counted toward the fat in your meal. If you happen to make a shake that contains a tablespoon or so of liquid Omega Rx, its fine to count it as the fat in the shake.

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
