Thanks, Sue! I am trying to wrap my head around the eicosanoid thing! It's fascinating. Either I am making too many bad eicos or not enough EPA to promote the level of good eicos...... Dave (in customer education) said insulin is the thing that makes bad eicos....sooooo, hmmm. I could be better at zoning for eicos instead of just zoning for weight loss. Hmmm! |

My thoughts on the eicosanoid thing is that we tend to get too wrapped up in the little details, and we forget to look at the big picture. Personally, I don't really think in terms of eicosanoids. I just do the best to make good choices in foods and healthy habits, such as fish oil. If you use the Eicosanoid Status report, you can get a fairly good idea on whether or not your fish oil dose is appropriate. But, even at that, it can get confusing, some symptoms can be attributed to things other than your dose of fish oil. So, I figure that if I improve my food choices (which I do), I have taken a really good step towards improving my eicosanoid status. Then, if I take fish oil (which I do), I am taking another good step. But, if things start to fall apart by increasing fish oil, I know what I need to do, because the diet (hopefully) is constant. |

<div class='NTForums_Quote'>Posted By janet on 06/01/2009 11:23 PM Thanks, Sue! I am trying to wrap my head around the eicosanoid thing! It's fascinating. I could be better at zoning for eicos instead of just zoning for weight loss. Hmmm!</div> You're welcome janet! Your last statement re "zoning for eicos" is exactly what it's about. Insulin is one factor in eicosanoid control. The better your insulin control, the lower your need for fish oil. The type of fat you eat is another factor in producing bad eicosanoids. The type of fat you eat determines how much AA you have. AA is the building block of bad eicosanoids. Then there's GLA, a tricky thing. You want your body to produce GLA because it can make powerful good eicosanoids, but it can also begin to produce bad eicosanoids when you ingest too much of the omega 6 oils that you make GLA from. If you place your focus more on insulin control and the type of fat you eat, rather than on weight loss, you'll achieve the best possible results with the Zone. If were to think in terms of focusing on weight loss, after the knowledge I’ve accumulated in my 15 years in the Zone, insulin control and the types of fat I eat would be the very two things I would place intense focus on. As I see it, you are already into the process of changing what the notion of “weight loss focus” means. Eventually, in your mind your long held ideas on what to do to lose weight will also be replaced with the idea to focus on insulin and type of fats consumed. When you look at it closely, these two ideas are really taking the traditional thoughts people have about how to lose weight (like low calorie, no sweets, etc) and building on them by carrying it a step further to work for a lifetime and give you optimal health on top of it! Your current experience of being sensitive to subtle changes in FO demonstrates that you'll most likely be a person who achieves much better results practicing stricter adherence to your diet, (re both insulin control and type of fat intake). Since you can't simply increase you fish oil dose to make up for a less strict Zone diet (basically what Cran is getting at in her advice) you'll need to address it with much stricter adherence to the Zone diet. This is how Dr. Sears has explained it to me. This is also exactly the situation I am in. I'm glad to finally have some company! :-) (not that I would wish this type of sensitivity on anyone!) My strict adherence to the Zone diet (I'm sure you've noticed I practice strict adherence) is out of need. I am not able to overcome a less strict diet simply by increasing FO dose because I'm sensitive to the increased dose, and I literally feel horrible when I do not achieve good insulin control. I like a good loaf of bread as much as anyone else does, but I can’t handle the bad effects it has on me. And make no mistake, I'm definitely not deprived, nor "doomed" to a boring existence, when it comes to food. I currently eat the greatest variety of delicious food that I've ever eaten, and I love it! To take everything another step further, you can also be judicious when it comes to exercise, in regard to not overdoing it, and think about adding some type of relaxation practice to your lifestyle if you don't practice it already. Those things will help reduce any excess cortisol production. Please continue to let us know about your progress. It can be very helpful to others in the same situation that may be lurking here but not posting. I mentioned that I'll keep you updated about my current FO dose situation. I thought about starting a thread, but since you and I are going through a very similar situation at the same time, would it be ok if I put my updates here, sort of like comparing notes? Let me know. If not, I'll be happy to explain it in another thread. Thanks! |

I would love it if you posted your progress along here for all to read! I am excited to be having this dialogue, and appreciate your responses. You have hit the nail on the head by answering some of the things I was wondering about. Fats: could be a real issue. I have stopped using evoo to fry......(good idea, huh?) in case its true that it turns to transfat, have been using grapeseed oil for cooking......also a problem is that I eat a lot of cheese. At least half of it is low fat, but there are some good goat cheeses out there that I love and they are full fat.....so, I should eat a lot less cheese.....it could cause arachidonic acid, so its becoming clearer. I know that you eat a delicious diet, I also love real, fresh natural food! (maybe a little too much?) Exercize is my bugaboo! I don't like it nearly as much as you....I am lucky if I take a good 40 min walk everyday, (which I didn't yesterday) ....try to. And a "nurturing" yoga class once a week. so, if I can use less animal fat I should be headed in the right direction! Thanks again!

Exercise is a bugaboo for many of us! I think one problem is finding something that you enjoy doing, that you would not WANT to miss out on doing. Then, it needs to be something that you can do all year long, or else maybe find an alternate winter activity that you enjoy doing. Another problem is time. Some people seem to have flexible schedules and can easily fit it in. But, for others, there are other responsibilities that sometimes get in the way. And, facilities. If it happens to be an activity that requires special equipment or a facility, then the access can be a problme. So, I would agree, if you can do what you can to improve the "diet" choices, then you would be taking some good steps forward. Just don't get to the point where you can't see the forest through the trees. A lot of cheese may not be good, but there is no sense in eliminating it completely. That goes for other foods, too. Totally eliminating foods because they may contain AA or elevate insulin is also ignoring some of the more healthful aspects that you may miss out on. But, definitely is better to "moderate" the choices that are not as beneficial. Just trying to keep it in perspective... |

janet, you're actually one of the lucky ones. Your symptoms indicate you probably have a pretty good SIP (AA/EPA) and don't need as much fish oil as the average American. I agree with you insights on the amount of cheese you're eating, especially if a lot of it is goat cheese. Even low fat goat cheese, when you can find it, has a lot more fat the typical Zone lean protein source. BTW, cheeses are considered only a fair Zone protein source, because of the type of fat they contain. You'd be better keeping cheese to minimum. I'd suggest you use light (refined) olive oil for cooking rather than grape seed oil. Grape seed oil is predominantly an omega 6 fat, exactly the type of fat you don't want to add to you food in the Zone. Your exercise is fine. If you want to improve on it, you could consider adding a little strength training and doing a little more yoga, even 20 min. of yoga/stretching here or there a few times a week. It's not necessary to invest a lot of money or time to strength train. You can do it at home a few times a week, a minimal amount like 20 min, just enough to retain your current level of strength. |

Janet, I am not sure I am so "lucky"! I just don't have the extremes of symptoms that you are having. I just wanted to point out that outside of doing the SIP, you really can only know how to adjust by using the ESR and going by symptoms. |

Hi janet, me again! Here's what's happened with my FO dose. It’s a little long, but if it can help anyone I’m happy to put it all down here. About 9-10 years ago I began taking fish oil at the basic maintenance dose. Omega Rx was still in the testing stages, not yet being sold by Zone Labs, so I took the brands that Barry Sears recommended, Zone Perfect, OmegaBrite, and Ocean Essentials, trying them in that order. Zone Perfect FO gave me the spacey light headed and disoriented feeling if I took 10 capsules the full basic dose (I think), but not if I took 1/3 to 1/2 of that dose. Ocean Essentials did the same. OmegaBrite did the same plus gave me diarrhea a week or a little less into starting it. It was then that I sent an email to the Zone website asking if they could direct me to sources where I could find more info about FO, because I was having a problem taking it. Little did I know the amazing chai of events that that one little request would bring about. Barry Sears offered to personally help me with my FO dose, and end up helping my entire family, too! I (we, because it was also my son and one of my daughters) switched to Omega RX, which Dr Sears was selling to friends and family only, because it was not yet being sold to the public. That's the week when my high BP disappeared for good and my doc took me off the 2 high BP meds I’d been on for 6 yrs prior; the meds that had not even been successfully controlling my high BP! After much trial and error over several months (at one point he had even had me taking 1 ml. in a baby medicine dropper, every third day), Barry Sears determined my dose to be ¼ teaspoon of liquid Omega Rx every third day. A couple months after doing well with that dose, Zone labs began selling Omega Rx in capsules, and I found I was able to take 1 capsule every third day. One capsule was a tiny bit more FO than ¼ teaspoon liquid. I took that dose for many years, trying 3 or 4 times to increase it, only to result in the same symptoms (spaciness, faintness, lightheadedness, a disoriented feeling, and huge fatigue). I had even asked Barry Sears about increasing it a couple of times, but he cautioned me against trying, saying my body just wouldn’t handle it. (I have a desire to take as much FO as I am able to because of a very strong family history of Alzheimer’s). When Eico RX became available 2 years ago, I switched to that, again at the suggestion of, and under the guidance of, Barry Sears. He had me try 1 capsule of Eico Rx daily, and also suggested that I do the SIP test after one month at that dose (it takes 30 days on a FO dose to obtain full extent of the benefit of the dose). To my amazement I did fine, no symptoms (because of the added GLA, I assume). My AA/EPA result, done 30 days after taking 1 capsule of Eico Rx daily, was a 4, very good for a person taking only ¼ the basic maintenance dose of FO (optimal is 1.5 to 3). Barry then suggested I try to go up to 2 capsules of Eico Rx daily, cut out any omega 6 oils that I was adding to my diet, and to be very careful about eating foods containing AA, in order to lower my AA more (which would give me an even better SIP). The only omega 6 oil I was using was toasted organic sesame oil, so I eliminated it, and at the same time I became even more strict with animal protein choices to reduce AA intake further (which basically only meant eating chicken less often, not that I ate it frequently anyway; believe it or not chicken contains more AA than some other meats, like emu, ostrich and, though I’m not absolutely positive if I’m remembering correctly, turkey, too). Now you can see where my strict adherence comes into play. I tried to get to 2 capsules of Eico Rx, but to no avail, due to diarrhea every time I took 2 (that was one crazy summer 2 years ago, with diarrhea from FO, over and over, lol!). Long story short, I keep trying and gradually, by last fall (over a year later), I was able to take 2 caps Eico Rx daily, no symptoms, or so I thought (you’ll see). I figured I was on a roll, so I got brave and by the middle of this past winter, I was taking 3 capsules of Eico Rx daily but skipping the 3rd capsule every 3rd day (a dose of 3-3-2-3-3-2, etc. ; taking 2 at breakfast, one at lunch). I still wasn’t brave enough to try 3 at once; once you’ve experienced those lightheaded and kind of scary FO symptoms, you’re not wanting to go there again. Then one day a couple of months ago, I accidentally grabbed a bottle of Omega Rx at lunch (my husband takes both Eico Rx and Omega Rx, so both bottles are in the kitchen), and I took 1 Omega Rx instead of 1 Eico Rx. I realized almost immediately but I figured it was no big deal, since I was now able to take 3 Eico a day. But a few hours later when I began to feel very strangely calm and just a little bit out of it, I stared to wonder if I’d messed up my system with FO again, and what to do next . Looking back now, I think the calmness was probably not related, just a coincidence (Barry Sears agrees). Anyway, since I‘d also been having a very tired feeling off and on, going on almost a year and becoming more frequent, and now this little possible glitch when I accidentally took an Omega RX, I decided I’d run it by Barry Sears, to see what he thought. It’s also pertinent to note that I have hypothyroidism , and my endocrinologist has been helping me constantly adjust my thyroid hormone med (similar experience to my FO dose, where I need a litle more but my body is hypersensitive to it when I approach the dose I actually need; very frustrating). My endocrinologist has been attributing the tiredness, and also a new tendency toward constipation that I’ve had for a year or so (something I’ve never had before!), to thyroid levels, and it made sense to me. Well, I now know different. Barry suggested I stop all FO for 7 days to let the GLA wash out (he thought the fatigue could be related to GLA), and then resume with 1 Omega Rx every other day, or every third day, for 3-4 weeks, which he figured might be enough to build up the levels of EPA/DHA before adding back the GLA. He said then add 1 Eico RX daily at that point (to put the dose at 1 Eico Rx daily plus 1 Omega Rx every 3rd day), and then eventually switch out the Omega Rx’s for a second Eico Rx daily. Here’s what happened. I stopped all FO in the middle of April, for 7 days. By the second or third day of no fish oil my bowel habits had returned totally to normal (for me that’s numerous times a day, and never any constipation tendencies). This happened in only 2 days, when I’d had the problem for over year. I now see that this constipation had come on so gradually that I hadn’t noticed at first, until it became a nagging problem this past yr. I now know it was the GLA in the Eico because it first happened when I increased to 2 Eico a day and it got worse as time passed, plus it totally disappeared after 2 day of no Eico Rx. What sealed the deal that the constipation is most likely from the GLA was when I added back the 1 Eico Rx daily, a week ago Sunday. The next morning I was constipated again. Being on vacation at the time, I didn’t want to bother thinking about all of it, so for the past week I’ve maintained the dose of 1 Omega Rx every third day. I haven’t informed Barry Sears yet. My plan is to give it another few weeks on the Omega Rx dose and then try adding the 1 Eico again. If the constipation thing happens again, I’ll check in with Barry at that point. I’ll keep you updated! |

Wow! Thanks so much for this fabulous record of your trials with F.O. So, let me ask you this: why not just take omegaRx? Maybe you don't need the GLA ? I see that you and I are indeed having the same reaction, though maybe for different reasons. And thanks for the tip about grapeseed oil!! Wow. Ok, how about avocado oil? I'll research it. I was using it before the grapeseed. |

Because it would benefit me to be able to take more EPA/DHA, and I haven't been able to increase beyond 1 Omega Rx every third day. The SIP of 4 was while taking EPA /DHA daily, so taking it only twice a week is not an optimal dose for me. The added GLA allows me to take more, closer to the amount I need. So my difficulty lies in finding a balance of Omega Rx and Eico Rx that enables me to get at least 2 caps worth of EPA and DHA daily without getting too muh GLA. You're welcome on the grapeseed oil! Try almond oil. I like it a lot. You mentioned "frying". I'd suggest you stick with sauteeing, a healthier alternative to frying. |

| janet, feel free to ask me qns. It's taken me a while to take it all in, too. You and I may indeed have similar reasons for the similar symptoms. You may find that Eico Rx will help you increase you FO dose too. Since you're not consuming add'l GLA anywhere at the moment, your constipation may be resolved with more FO and the key to you being able to take more FO may very well be adding GLA, just as with me. Hopefully you won't end up getting a bit too much GLA as I seem to be. Give it time and keep experimenting. You'll learn a lot about your needs and how to best address them. |

| If your plan is to wait and then increase, a week or two shoud be plenty of time. I wouldn't add more than 1 Omega Rx at a time, in light of your previous experience, and probably continue to wait a week or two between any future increases beyond that. If you have the same symptoms again, then go back to square one, stopping all fish oil for a 2 or 3 weeks and then starting over with Plan B. A good Plan B would be switching to Eico Rx or a combination of Omega Rx and Eico Rx, starting slowly and increasing a little at a time again. That might allow you to take more fish oil than the amount you're able to tolerate when taking only Omega Rx. It definitely worked for me. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.
8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil

- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
