This thread and other threads lately have really opened my eyes as to what I will and will not put in my body. Thank you all for enlightening me to make better choices!

I'm changing my organic milk to full fat and to a brand I believe is 100% grass, clover and grass/clover silage fed. I am considering making my own full fat version of organic yogurt since I'm not able to buy organic yogurt here. I stopped eating yogurt a little while ago because I couldn't find organic. The meat and eggs I buy now are organic ... if they are not organic, I won't buy them. I have started to eat beef again, but I still need to do more research on what brands are 100% grass fed ... right now I just know that it's organic. I've stopped eating cheese because I can't find organic cheese here. I buy as many organic fruits/veggies as possible. If a fruit has a rind and it isn't organic, it gets washed in a solution of water with a little bleach. I don't assume something that says organic is organic without the organic seal. I also do a search on the web to see if the company has any lawsuits pending regarding the legitimacy of it being organic. I have also learned the difference between "all natural" and "organic" ... there was a time when I thought it was the same thing.

I feel good about the changes I have made - I just wish there were more organic choices.

Are you saying that I shouldn't cook with the Zone Olive Oil?

Olive oil (any olive oil, regardless of who makes it) has a very low smoke point. Once an oil is heated to the smoke point it changes the chemical structure of the fats and turns what would otherwise be healthy fats into unhealthy fats.

You should not heat any extra virgin oil, including Zone Labs olive oil.

Hmmm, lots of debate on the heating of olive oil. We have discussed this before, and as I recall, there are probably just as many sources that say that heating EVOO is safe, as there are sources that warn against it.

I believe that most of our cooking is done at temps that are lower than the smoking point, unless one is deep frying. Especially if doing a quick saute, this should not cause a problem.

I didn't mean this to be the take-away point of the post.

I don't need plant-matter in my diet at every meal. I don't see the benefits of either the fiber or the 'extra nutrients' that are the rationale for plant food. The same groups that advocate 5-7 daily servings are the same ones who have brought us:

Low fat diets are healthy diets
High cholesterol is a killer and should be treated with drugs
Butter is bad, margarine is healthy
Lard is bad, shortening is healthy
30g of fiber a day is healthy
Fiber protects you from colon cancer
Fiber is heart healthy
7-10 servings of grain a day is a healthy diet
Reduce calories to lose weight
Intense aerobics leads to long-term weight loss
Eggs are deadly; avoid them
Eat heart-healthy vegetable oils, soy, corn, canola
Saturated fats will kill you
Salt leads to hypertension and will kill you
Drink OJ every day, you need the extra vit C

(feel free to add you own here...this could become quite the list!)

So...if I don't need the nutrients and I don't need the fiber....and fruit has too many carbs and I don't like the taste of veggies too much and they're somewhat difficult to digest (the Paleo reference) and need to be cooked to process fully--but then lose much of their nutritional value--why should I be sure to include them in my diet?

Again, I'll eat veggies that I like from time-to-time but don't consider them a valued part of my diet. Local, seasonal berries, fruit and vegetables grown in healthy soil, mostly organic with a low transport impact vs. large-scale, commercial varieties will be my choice for plant foods.

Ps. What may work for me is not optimal for anyone else. This is an explanation, not a plea for converts. Personal nutrition is just that--find what works for you and stick to it!

what works for you is ...a good thing. ANd I love your willingness to question everything. However, some vegetables actually increase in their ability to release their nutritional value with cooking...carrots for example. apparently more vit. A can be digested when the cell walls are broken dwn with cooking, contrary to popular belief....and then there's winegrapes, whose resveratrol is best released as a result of fermentation...(the stuff is better for ya than grapes!!!) You see, early man continued to experiment and discover things....like some grapes sitting around in a pot turning to wine, or some olives rolling into a tide pool turning into something edible...

Aside from additonal calories, is there any harm that can be derived from a large consumption of olive oil or monosaturated fats? In other words, are ther side effects?

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
