Hi, Margaret! Just got on to read a couple posts ... I haven't been on in a long time, but I still think about you all the time! Very glad to see that your insulin and blood sugar levels are dropping. YEA! I agree with your doctor ... it's going to happen!!! I truly believe that because you have made BIG improvements to your diet and only good can come from that. Are you still addicted to the scale? I have a feeling if you stop watching the scale, that's when it will happen. Kinda like a watched pot never boils ... at least mine never does! LOL! Anyway, it's good to see some improvement in your lab work. Love that good news! |

OMG Karen!!!! I just refreshed my screen and saw your name!!! My eyes nearly popped out of my head!! How are you? I hope things are going well for you and your family. So great to see your name here ..... I was going to send my email address to CC so that she could pass it on to you - only if you want it that is .... Yes - good about the blood test results and yes I still jump on the scales morning and night .... its sad but true. I measure myself every second day and it is still the same. I only do the waist. I know today what part of it is - that time of the month .... I know I have to be patient but I have been patient since December .... Good to hear from you Karen. |

LOL, Margaret! I know ... it's been a long time. Please pass on your e-mail address ... I'd love to chat! I've really missed you! I'm doing GREAT now. As I think you know, I felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders with my mom and niece, etc., and I went into a depression. Never felt like that before, and I don't recommend it! What a downer! LOL! Well, I finally let go and released all my problems over to God. It was unbelievable ... the very next day I was happy again! Nothing has changed ... I just FINALLY realized "I" couldn't control it. I don't know why I ever thought so much of myself in thinking I could! LOL! I've been very busy trying to help my mom. She just had her 87th birthday. She gets tired easily and gets very confused all the time. We just looked at pictures taken last year on her birthday ... can't believe it's the same person. So sad. My sister, BIL and niece were here this past week. So fun! It was great seeing Jenny. She has such a great attitude toward her illness. She had a doctor visit today to find out the next course of action. To everyone's surprise, they started the new treatments today! Her doctor conferred with Duke University. She will have two chemo treatments plus Avastin every two weeks. This is the same clinical trial they are doing at Duke University only her own doctor is administering it. This is great because they won't have to travel from Chicago to North Carolina every two weeks. I'm very optimistic about this course of action. Fingers crossed! Well, I wish I had good news like you did at your doctor app't. I went on 3/17 and just received bad news, bad news and more bad news. My lupus is really attacking my liver (it has for a while ... just worse now), it's gone into my pancreas and is just starting on my kidneys. Funny, I don't feel any worse. I did have some good news though ... I lost 6.5 lbs! That totals 15 lbs now. YEA! Also, he was able to give me free samples of medicine to last me a while and was able to get one pharmaceutical company to pay for one of my one medicines for six months (my 20% of that one is $360 every four weeks!)! HUGE smiley face! I know you have been patient. Don't be angry with me, but I really consider you back to Zoning since January. I say this because you had a lot of problems in December with the Christmas goodies. I'm not saying you didn't try, but the holiday celebrations really called your name and you answered! LOL! BUT, I think you are now getting health problems taken care of and I think that scale is going to go down, down down! Just don't watch it every day. Make a game of it and see if you can last a week without touching it. Have to admit you surprised me today. I didn't know you were measuring yourself that often, too! So, let's put the tape measure away, also! I have renewed enthusiasm for exercising. My sister bought me two new pairs of shorts when she was here this past week. I am right inbetween sizes. I could fit into the next size smaller easily, but they were just a bit tight. Let's say you could see a buldge, and I don't wear clothes where you can see a buldge! LOL! The next size up made me look slimmer since you can't see that darn old buldge. It won't take much to get into that smaller size. I found a tubular band with built-in ankle straps at my mom's, so I have been using that for my legs. I've been using it for my arms, too. Also, I have done some exercises in the whirlpool. I tried going swimming, but the water was too cold for me. Everyone thought it was nice (heated pool), but my bones said no. So what is your exercise routine now? Hey, forgot to ask you ... how's it going with your sister? I hope everything has been straightened out. Still hard to believe she got so upset with you trying to help her. Well, aren't I the chatty little thing! So much catching up to do! |

Karen, REALLY glad to see you out there! So much going on in your life, I am so glad that you were able to hand it to God! That is one of the most difficult things for us to do, but it certainly did make a difference for you. And it is so cool to have the internet, where you can literally pass on your message and suddenly people all around the world are praying! You KNOW I am praying for your mom and for Jenny--and for you, too! |

Margaret! Great news on the blood levels! Your insulin levels are lowering, I don't know how that corresponds with American measurements, but LOWER is definitely where you want to go! Glad that is occurring. I was afraid that your glucose would go down, but not necessarily your insulin, because Januvia encourages more insulin production in order to regulate glucose (if I am remembering what the PDR said. As it continues to lower, I really think you will start to see physical results. BTW, Karen has a point. Weighing and measuring too frequently will not allow you to see the forest through the trees! |

Thanks, CC! My family and I really, really appreciate yours, sue's and everyone's prayers. It's funny how I prayed and prayed, but still kept the burden. Figures that I would do that! LOL! You know I'm still praying for Steve and your family and for sue's husband and their family. I can't remember the date I go for a treatment in April ... I see the doctor the first week in May. Hopefully, it will be better news. I think it will be! I think it was my depression that made me worse so fast. There wasn't a whole lot of happiness going on, and I believe that a person does better with a good attitude. Besides, that darn old depression drained my body, and I need every bit of energy I can get! I just wasn't myself - it takes a lot out of a person when they are not themself. So here's to getting better! Cheers! BTW, I love your picture! You have a twin. There is a person where my mom lives who looks just like you! In fact, if the picture wasn't under your name, I would have thought it was her! |

Wow, I must have a whole family of twins! I was approached by someone at the tournament this weekend who asked me what house I bowl at up in Hayward! Well, I don't even live close to Hayward! Thanks! I like that picture, it kind of tells more about who I am (I like my kitty picture, too, but at least this one gives a face to the name). |

| I read all the postings here, and found it very informative. Thanks to you all for all the info. Insulin resistance is typical of most of us with weight problems, with the zone I feel this challenge can be over-come, knowing others are struggling too , and hearing of their sucess keeps me motivated. Thanks |

Hi Karen Your wish has been granted!!!! I have put the scales away!!! I had a really bad night last night. I was cooking and watching Biggest Loser. My husband was in the loungeroom and said there was going to be a bit about people who had lost weight. I flicked the channel. It was the diet of drink 2 shakes etc. All of a sudden tears started to well up in my eyes and I started crying .... I couldnt stop!! I just so sick of trying and trying and nothing happening .... My husband tried to tell me that there was a lot I wasnt doing but I felt that I had been trying .... Anyway .... I put the scales away this morning - didnt weigh myself. I am going to weigh only on Saturdays. I must say there was a great relief of not being disappointed from seeing that same number just sitting there looking at me. I do feel different. I feel like a weight (excuse the pun) has been lifted from my shoulders. I have been putting a lot of pressure on myself - thinking of how I can get this weight off - all my thoughts during the day were of this. I am going to try and not do that. Just take one day at a time. I will still follow the Zone - I will still exercise. I want to start enjoying life and not be bogged down by the constant struggle of trying to work out why ..... |

Margaret,
Boy my heart goes out to you. I too just see that stupid scale sitting in the same place, or I lose and gain again so quickly it doesn't matter. I guess so many of us struggle so deeply and it seems to consume our lives. I sometimes decide to go or not to go to certain events depending on the scale in the morning. I am so tired of the weight that keeps me from living life to its fullest. After reading your post, I decided to throw the scale under the bed. I need to keep my focus on being healthy, keeping my insulin under control and exercising. That's enough for my little brain to concentrate on. Thank you for your post.
I do have a question to put out there; there have probably been other posts that answer this question, but I couldn't find them. Does Steevia raise insulin levels? I use quite a bit of it. Also can I use coconut in recipes? I know it has a bit of sugar in it, but I ran out of almonds and replaced them with coconut for the fat. Also the taste! I think I like it too much, it must be bad for me! |

Margaret, good for you! At this stage, it isn't all about losing weight. It is about lowering those insulin levels and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you read TOXIC FAT, you will see that there can be people with an excess of bodyfat who have low levels of inflammation, and there can also be skinny people with high levels of inflammation. As long as you practice the healthy lifestyle, your goal will be to keep your fat from being toxic. And, the changes WILL happen. I have been working on it for years, myself. I spent a lot of time feeling frustrated over it, and that didn't help me at all. It just made me feel worse about it. Now, to be quite honest, I do weigh myself frequently, but I am not recording all of those weights. I only count one weight per month, and that is the one that occurs on my weigh-in day at Curves. And, I also get measured, so that I can truly see the changes in fat and LBM. ENJOY your newly found freedom! |

Margaret, my heart goes out to you! Sometimes we need a good cry to let it all out before we can move on. I am beyond proud of you for putting the scale away! That was causing too much anxiety and stress for you. I have a feeling you will start losing now that you are relaxing a little. It's like couples who try and try to have a baby, but with no success. It just consumes them every second of the day. Then when they start adoption proceedings or right after they adopt a child, the stress goes away and wala! they get pregnant! It's happened to several people I know. I sincerely hope it's true for you in losing weight. |

Hi Julie Thanks for your post. I cant believe how much I needed those scales. I used to way myself in the morning after I went to the toilet, then weighed myself when I got home from work and then before I went to bed. I still have the urge to get on them but I wont until Saturday. I am apprehensive about Saturday but if I can just check my weight one day a week that will be ok. Good on you for putting your scales away. I hope you had a big relief like me. On Tuesday I was on a course and whilst sitting there in the morning I could hear myself saying ... so ... this is what normal feels like ... not being a slave to the scales! I often wondered what do people occupy their mind with if they arent constantly thinking about their weight like you and me ..... hopefully now we will have other things to think about! I will leave your questions for the experts to answer. Write again soon and let us know how you are going. I will be writing a post soon if I have lost some weight! |

Hi CC I think a lot of people are like me. They are doing the Zone to loose weight but now with the insulin resistance it is a priority that I get my insulin levels lowered. I have a pair of jeans that my daughter handed down to me. This is going to be a gauge as well. I will be happy when I can put them on easily - not having to breath in and do them up nicely. I havent worn jeans for many years because of my stomach. I still have to stop and think why am I not jumping on the scales but I will wait until Saturday .... it is a habit I have been doing all my adult life so it may take a bit of time to get used to. |

Hi Karen It was pretty full on on Monday night, I just sobbed. I had built up all this inside of me and had to let it out. There are so many things on TV about people loosing weight and I think that one my husband told me about was the last straw. My husband said they can do it on Biggest Loser so can I - I then explained to him that they were exercising 4-6 hours a day. I work so that gets in the way! Anyway, I do feel better for not jumping on the scales 3 times a day. I dont know how I will feel on Saturday when I check but I hope that the pressure wont be as great and fingers crossed their will be a loss. I have also heard about the adopting parents getting pregnant not long after bringing their new adopted baby home. Will be great if this stress release is the key that will be the answer to my problem. |

Hi Margaret! Cathartic moments are good! I say don't even weigh on Saturday. It only amounts to testing yourself again. Just wait a few weeks. You won't need the scale to know you're losing fat. You'll feel it and notice it in the fit of your clothes, too. Remember that you're not alone. A vast majority of people are insulin resistant to some extent, some more than others; its very reason that they have excess fat to lose. My tips (for today!): 1. Let your husband's well meaning advice go in one ear the out the other. 2. Don't let one aspect of the Zone outweigh all the others. Keep you focus on all the parts of the Zone. You know what to do! 3. Keep your eye on the prize (those jeans!). Positive thinking will be a big plus in getting you to your goal. Go Margaret! |

Well, guess what? I think that you will notice more progress with the fat issue once those insulin levels start to really drop! So, just keep that focus on insulin levels and what you can do to control them, rather than on that nasty scale (it lies, it is not your friend!). |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
