| I've been reading all the articles relating to supplements on the Zone diet. Does anyone have an idea on just what we should be taking each day? Although I've ordered the fish oil there are so many others that I'm not sure what to choose. Thank you |

Just take the fish oil. That one is a biggie. The rest of them, IMO, are things that you should be able to get from your diet. Some folks feel more at ease by taking supplements. But, I believe that we should be getting all of our nutrients from our food. |

| I DO TEND TO AGREE WITH YOU AS FAR AS GETTING OUR NUTRIENTS MAINLY FROM FOOD SOURCES, ESPECIALLY SINCE I'M EATING SUCH A VARIETY OF FOODS NOW BUT THE ARTICLES DID MAKE ME WONDER. THANK YOU FOR THE CONFIRMATION. IT WAS WHAT I WAS HOPING TO HEAR. |

The Zone Diet is the base of the Zone Wellness Pyramid and right over that is the Omega3's step. Both these are well enough to get you "In the Zone"... Now if there's any specific condition you are trying to treat or Boost, then that's when you would go for the "Targeted Supplements". If it helps, there is a brief description on each of the supplements which tells you how the Diet/Omega3's/Targeted supplement work in combination. (It's one of the tabs right next to the nutritional value of each.) Hope this helps. |

| It does indeed help especially since I'm hypertensive and pre-diabetic. Actually this is why I started the Zone diet. I'm hoping to reduce my weight which should reduce both BP and blood sugar. Unfortunitely I can't find the info that you mentioned. Can you give me more details? Thank you |

With those conditions, I think you would do well with the fish oil. As far as I am concerned, you would get most of the other nutrients from your food sources, unless you are concerned that you are not getting enough. If you use the Zone Lab's product, then a "recommended" dose would be either 2 tsp of liquid fish oil, or 8 capsules. I tend to eat a lot of veggies with color, I end up with some blueberries most days, some strawberries most days, and a dash of pomegranete juice in my water, and green tea. I think that those who truly eat according to the guidelines set forth by Sears in his books will really not need to supplement. But, Sears does consider supplements as an "insurance policy". |

| I ordered the fish oil caps yesterday and I also have some strawberries and blueberries most days so I think I'll wait to see how things go before deciding on the other products. Are the Zone products usually shipped quickly? |

| HI everyone, I just received my 2-week packet of vitamins. It has OMEGA RX AN POLYPHENOL PLUS. Cranberry cat, you did mention in a previous e-mail that I should take 8 caps. Because the bottle states 4 caps daily I just wanted to double check. Also it seems that everyone talks about the fish oils but nobody really discusses the other supplements such as the polyphenol plus that I also received. So I was wondering what others take each day. And also is there a brand of fish oil comparable to Zone that I can buy locally? And you were right, the fatigue did pass after about five days and I'm feeling great now. Just confused about the vitamins. Take care. PATTI |

Hi PATTI! I take various supplements, not all from Zone Labs. I follow a supplement plan that my doctor has designed to suit my specific needs. The Zone Labs supplements included in my plan are Eico Rx, Sea Health Plus (I use Polyphenol Plus for convenience when traveling), Micronutrient Support, and Weight Loss support (for the benefits of green tea, since I'm already at an ideal weight). Either Omega Rx or Eico Rx fish oil, together with the Zone Diet, will do the most to normalize your blood pressure. I've had excellent results with it. You can read my high blood pressure and fish oil story here: http://www.zonediet.com/Community/Forums/tabid/121/forumid/4/postid/37029/view/topic/Default.aspx You can't buy a fish oil comparable to Zone Labs fish oils in a health food store. Glad to hear you're feeling great now! Keep up the good work! |

Pat, I recommended 8 caps because Sears recommends that dose for those with chronic conditions (you mentioned hypertension and pre-diabetes). Also, for those who are overweight, he also considers this to be a health condition that should be treated with that amount of fish oil. His recommendations can be found in THE OMEGA RX ZONE and TOXIC FAT. You could try to find an equivalent fish oil in a store. Just look for one with the same ratio of EPA and DHA. Also, choose a fish oil that documents that it is free of pollutants. I don't take the polyphenols. I feel that the variety of foods that I eat and drink should provide adequate polyphenols. I only take a few supplements per day, and that is because I live in the north and don't get adequate vitamin D. I also take calcium, but moreso as an insurance policy, rather than a need. |

Hi PATTI, A tip, the better your adherence to the Zone Diet over time, the less fish oil you will need. Let the SIP test and Dr. Sears' dose recommendations be your guide. 8 apsules daily is appropriate for you for now because you are beginning a diet, which is one of the criteria for the 8 capsule dose. Otherwise, for a person such as yourself with pre-diabetes and hypertension, 4 capsules daily would suffice. |

Hi CC, The soil that veggies and fruits usually grow in is depleted as compared to, say, 60 years ago. Due to pesticles, over-use, etc. I think the estimate is that food in general--veggies and fruits--has lost 25% of its original amount of nutrients. If it's organic soil and organic food, you get more for the bang, though. Organic food tend to retain more of the nutrients. Alexy |

But, I also came across a report of a clinical study that had the following to say: calcium supplements: it helps the bones, but as soon as you stop taking the supplements, the benefits vanish from the bones. When you eat calcium-rich food, though, this doesn't happen. The benefits remain within the body for a long time. I think it's because calcium supplements are very one-dimensional, while whole foods are far more complex. Interesting ... Alexy |

I would agree with you, Alexy. Getting our nutrients from whole foods is much better than getting them from supplements. That is one big reason why I don't depend on supplements. Now, I have nothing against taking supplements as "insurance" (as long as not overdone). But, I am not going to take a supplement in lieu of eating right. |

| Thank you for the confirmation , CRANBERRYCAT. I've decided to take 8 caps of fish oil along with a multivite and calcium for a little while then try to reduce that amount as SUE suggested using the SIP. I make every attempt to follow the diet strictly and actually found that on the one day that I was lax in keeping in the zone, I felt really out of sorts the next day. My granddaughter spent the day with me and we sort of pigged out on junk. I think I finally have the information I need to follow the plan correctly thanks to the help I receive here. THANK YOU ALL. You're welcome PATTI!
Some clarification, I wasn't suggesting you try to reduce the 8 capsule dosage anytime soon, but rather to start with it now, and let the SIP test (that's the AA/EPA blood test) be your guide to future dose adjustments. |
