I have several friends that are deep into the Atkins ketotic diet. Right now I'm reading The Antiinflammation Zone. It states that much meat and saturated fat leads to excess arachadonic acid buildup and silent inflammation. They don't wanna hear it. Their favorite meals are dripping (literally) with saturated fat. And most are seeing their lipid profiles improving. How do I counter that argument?

Their cholesterol panels could actually improve, but if they were to test their SIP (silent inflammation profile), I bet they would be terrible!

Start reading on page 35 of your book. It is all in there.

I understand your concern.

I guess that it why they call it "silent inflammation".

Actually, I would be surprised if anyone following Atkins can answer honestly about mental concentration. Too little sugar to feed the brain, and the brain can't function properly. I actually tried Atkins once, before zoning. I was so spacey and forgetful, it really was not even funny!

And, how about constipation? Can any of your friends honestly say that they are not constipated following Atkins? (without the use of fiber supplements, of course--that is cheating).

It says somewhere in the anti inflammation book that after 6 months people on Atkins diet start to gain the weight back because of unbalance in the body. He gives a bit of explanations as to why.

Here's an argument for you Kevin that I found in the soy zone book in the FAQ section on pages 246-247:

Question: Why do high-protein diets fail?

Answer:

Unlike the Soy Zone Diet, which contains a balance of protein and carbohydrates (with actually more carbohydrates than protein), high-proteins diets are just that -- excessive levels of protein and almost no carbohydrates. These high-protein diets generate an abnormal metabolic state known as ketosis, which occurs when there isn't enough carbohydrate in the diet and the body is unable to completely metabolize stored fat. The incomplete metabolism of fat produces chemicals known as ketone bodies, and the body will go to great strides to eliminate them through increased urination. Unfortunately, increased urination also causes the loss of electrolytes such as potassium, which gives rise to both fatigue and irritability. Another short-term consequence of high-protein diets is the tearing down of muscle mass to make adequate levels of glucose for the brain. If insufficient carbohydrate is coming from the diet, the brain will instruct the body's muscles to begin consuming themselves and turn this protein into enough carbohydrate to maintain brain function.

Although millions of people have lost weight on high-protein diets, the same millions have invariably regained all the lost weight. Why? If you stay in ketosis for weeks or months, your fat cells adapt to this state and begin to sequester and hold onto their fat stores. In essence, continually eating high levels of saturated fat, found in many animal protein sources, will eventually lead not only to cardiovascular problems, but also a condition called insulin resistance where your cells become less responsive to insulin. With time, insulin levels increase in the bloodstream and rapid wight gain ca occur. This is because excess insulin caused the accumulation of body fat in the first place. Finally, new research has demonstrated that continued ketosis causes oxidation of your lipoproteins, which is one of the major factors in the development of hear disease.

Years ago I was on the Atkins diet and stayed on it for about two years. In fact, I met many people on the internet, who had stayed on it for more than a year.

For me, the reason why it failed, it was boring. In fact, a study that was done a few years back on all the top diets, Zone included, the main reason for those who fell off the low-carb diets like Atkins, was boredom. Weight-watchers had the highest success rate.

On Atkins, eating bacon and eggs every morning, without the crunch of toast, was boring.

Eating some form of meat and low-carb veggies every evening, got boring. Eventually the body screams, I want pasta!

I tried the Zone, but I gained weight on it, probably because by that time, I was just bored of dieting all together. I did feel great however.

Please, don't give me its not a diet routine. If I have to follow a specific way of eating, its a diet.


Anyway, Lent starts tomorrow, and I usually go back to Atkins during Lent. However, I've found that I really don't the like fog brain feeling and irritability, that the two weeks induction phase give me.

So, I'm gonna go back with the Zone diet again, and hopefully pay closer attention to what I'm doing.

I'd also like to move toward vegetarianism if possible. I need to read up on Vegetarian Zone dieting.

Jim,

I appreciate your honesty and "candid"ness.

A good book to check out at the library may be THE SOY ZONE. It might help you if you are looking towards vegetarianism. However, I hope it doesn't seem even more restricting to you!

What I like to do is to take some of my favorite meals and figure out a way to zone them. So, maybe you can work it out, or even post something here, and then we can all brainstorm on how we fit it into the Zone.

I lost a lot of weight yrs ago as a vegetarian zoner, no problem, there are so many soy foods out there...now I eat meat so its like whole new diet...

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
