When I got home from the markets last Saturday it was close to lunch so quickly cooked up some Kofta sauages (beef/lamb/spices) - cooked up some red onion in olive oil and opened up a can of baked beans (not that favourable). Anyway ... 4 hours later I realised I hadnt been hungry once and had to remind myself that I would need to have a snack soon.

I was quite excited that I had stayed in the Zone (have been striving for this for a few weeks). I know that the baked beans werent favourable but they did the trick.

Margaret, maybe it was the fiber from the beans that kept you in the Zone! Glad to hear that things are working out for you!

Good that it worked for you! There was probably some extra fat in the meal (in the sausage) that helped, too.

Actually I was so surprised to see how much fat drained out of the sausages. I cooked them in the oven and had a baking sheet in the pan.

I am still to see those scales move ..... my stomach is still my biggest problem area. It wont go away! I am feeling other benefits from the Zone like being clear headed but have only lost 3.5 lbs since November last year ... yes I have had a lot of tweaking to my meals from forum members which has been great but this is getting ridiculous! (half said in jest). I will keep doing what I am doing and hopefully something in my body will say ok - thats it!!

One of the men at works wife has had lapband surgery and has lost 77 pounds in only a few months. She is in her early twenties. I dont want to go down that road but ..... wish I had lost all of my weight before menopause set in.

I will be having blood tests on 23 February for thyroid, hormones etc and see the doctor on 26 February so will be interesting to see what he says as he was the one who put me on the Optifast - I lost 8 kilos with that and put it all back on plus a lot more ....

Hi Margaret!

Remember to think veggies. That is the key to the best results in the Zone. Mostly veggies for carb most every day, and consistently eating Zone balanced meals and snacks will get you where you want to be.

You could try is writing down everything you put in your mouth. You may be surprised, and see a pattern that could be enough to be preventing your wt loss.

Good luck with your tests next Monday!

Hi Sue

I have been having lots of veggies (CC's words are still in my head). At lunch today I had a container of cucumbers with yoghurt dressing, grapes (1 block), deli turkey and nuts. Had the same lunch yesterday and it kept me happy for hours.

It just seems weird that I am not loosing at all ... still doing exercise and nothing is shifting.

I shiver a bit when people say to write things down. My daughter and I went to a dietitian a few years back and at the end of each day we would sit on the lounge and I would write hers and my eating for the day. After a few months it was getting to me! I will write everything down - and then want to see from Calorieking.com.au how many calories - just out of curiosity I am consuming. I know that I wont be writing down "Lindt" chocolate. I have kicked that habit!!

Sue - do you know when the fat/block calculator will be up and running?

Margaret,
Yes, I agree that it can be frustrating. But, at least it is 3.5 # less than what you had before.

In my years of Zoning, I have put way too much focus on losing weight, while forgetting about all of the other benefits of the Zone. So, when I hit plateaus, I get too hard on myself, and I don't see the "good" that I have done. Sometimes, that leads to my going OOZ, and then I end up gaining instead of losing, and feeling physically worse than I did.

So, eventually I end up going back into the Zone. Sure, the weight loss is slow for me, but at least there are a lot more reasons to live this lifestyle, because abandoning it doesn't get me any further, and usually just makes things worse.

I just thought I would share this with you. Don't get discouraged over the slow weight loss. Think of the good things that you are doing for yourself. That is usually what I have to do, to pull me back.

Good luck with your tests!

Hi CC

Thanks.

I would love to be on a "plateau" but I dont think 3.5lbs since November is a "plateau". A plateau is when you have steady weight loss and then all of a sudden it stops.

It was like you said the other day - it would be great to wake up and see that the scales have gone down 5lbs overnight!

With the tests I hope they say I am lacking some hormone - here is the cure and the weight will start dropping off as it should have been all these months.

Hi Margaret!

Let's regroup here for a min, and take a look at the facts.

You've been losing about 1 pound per month for the past 3 months, a step in the right direction. During that time you have experimented to find shakes, meals, etc. that work for you, and on a number of occasions they have not really kept you in the Zone. There have also been the holidays, the candy store, etc. I'm not saying these have been everyday or every week occurrences, but in the past 3 months there have been enough of these disruptions to prevent continuous steady fat loss. Once a person goes out of the Zone, it can take up to a few days to get back in.

My tip about writing things down was meant to be simple, not tedious or upsetting, just an idea that could possibly help to give you a little more insight. I had in mind something like keeping a pencil and paper on the kitchen counter and jotting down the food when you take some food out to eat, like writing down eggs, grapes, turkey, cucumbers, etc. (not specifics of blocks or amounts, nor sitting down once a day to write the whole day's food, nor totaling it, nothing complicated). You could think of it as something as innocuous as keeping a running shopping list in reverse. It's for your eyes only, not to share here, unless you want to. It usually turns out to be very helpful (and, it's not a test!). :-)

Where to go from here to get rid of your excess body fat?

1. For starters, eat veggies for all your carb, no fruit for now. If you must have fruit, eat only 1 block a day from either blueberries or strawberries. No fruit will get you into the Zone better especially considering your carb sensitivity.

2. Supplement with the appropriate amount of fish oil, and take either Zone Labs fish oils or their equivalent (an ultra-refined fish oil with a 60% concentration, 2/1 EPA to DHA, that meets the IFOS 5 star criteria).

3. Drink a lot of water (I think you already do, but not sure).

4. You might want to try adding soy protein to your diet; tofu is an easy way (it helps maintain better insulin control).

Let me know how this sounds. If it’s not to your liking maybe we can figure out something else.

About the calculator, I didn't mean to give the idea that new factors were being installed. I simply meant they are aware of the situation. I don't know exactly what they have in mind to do about it. If you'd like to post your info I'll be happy to take another look at your protein /block requirement.

LOL! I didn't mean to make that assumption that you were on a plateau. I just wanted to share with you the struggles that I have gone through in the past.

For some of us, the fat just doesn't drop off that easily!

Actually, I went down the same path as you, thinking that maybe it was hormonal, like thyroid, for instance. But, that was negative. I am glad that it wasn't, because I don't want to be taking pills for the rest of my life! (fish oil is enough)

Hang in there!

Hi CC

I am hanging in there which is amazing as in the olden days I would have given up by now!!! When my weight got to a certain figure on the scales I said enough!

I dont want it to be thyroid which it hasnt been so far but the last doctor I saw was saying something about Oestrogen and that is why I have to have the blood test. Will let you know the results when I get them.

Still taking the fish oil.

Hi Sue

Thank you for your post. I wasnt expecting it!! But it was a pleasant surprise.

Yes. The weight loss is a loss but it is also frustrating that it is ... I was going to say slow but this is beyond slow. I have eaten candy and had holidays in the past years and managed to loose but my body is being very stubborn now. My daughter who has PCOS is experiencing the same problem. We dont live together so we cant blame that!

I will try writing down as you say. Maybe it needs to be a test so that I will try harder! haha

I was having a laugh to myself - Australian Biggest Loser has just started again here - what if I were a contestant and the weight wasnt moving - what would they do with me???

If I have fruit it is usually 2 blocks a day - always strawberries or blueberrie - on occassions grapes or apple but have cut out oranges etc. I have been thinking of ways to make veggies interesting and always factor them into a meal.

The fish oil I have to research more. CC said the one I was having may not be the best one. I can get the Zone one from my contact in Australia but it is very expensive. I was thinking I might have to try the bottle and see how I feel.

Water I need to drink more of - I probably only get up to 5 glasses a day.

Funny about the tofu - I buy it and then by the time I get around to cooking it it is out of date ... the thought was there ... I have a a really good Chinese cook book so will get that out and start on the tofu.

My blocks wouldnt have changed as my measurements and weight are practically the same as November so maybe will do another calc in a few weeks time if my fat loss does start to go down. It is my stomach that is making me so desperate to start the fat loss. I can't fit into a lot of clothes because of all the weight that is sitting there. Weight that has just piled on over the months without me doing anything to justify it being there. This is also a dangerous area to be carrying weight.

This is what my son wrote today about how I should be doing my exercise ..... Has he remembered that he was talking to his 55 year old mother??

Exercise harder is the biggest tip I can give you. If you think you are exercising hard...exercise harder, you need to hurt, you need to sweat, you neeeeeeeeed to run out of breath.

You're welcome Margaret!

Glad you were happy to see it! We'll get you losing the fat. You're getting there. Forget the past and look forward. When you go on that trip next year, the relatives won't even recognize you!

I just composed a post to you here that contained a few tips and a quick delicious tofu breakfast recipe, but lost it when I hit a wrong key. I'll post the tofu recipe sometime tomorrow. :-)

Here are the tips.

1. As you know, it's not necessary to exercise to lose stored body fat in the Zone. To keep your cardiovascular system healthy, fight inflammation and keep your body strong, a simple walk and a little bit of weight resistance/strength training is fine. If you want to do more because you like it, that's fine too. But don't think it's going to make you lose more fat. Once we figure out what it takes to get you on track, you'll lose about a pound a week regardless of how much you exercise.

2. It would be good re-read TOXIC FAT, especially the part about the fat trap. It will give you a better understanding of what's happening with you and why the right type and amount of fish oil is so important.

3. Tofu can be whatever you like; no need to stick with Chinese food when using it! Think out of the box...chili, onion dip for veggies, chocolate pudding to put your berries on top of, the "cheese" in veggie lasagna...

Have fun with it!

Margaret,

I would take a different stand than Sue on the Exercise. I think it is very important. It definitely makes a difference for me.

As we eat in the Zone, dieting helps us to switch over to burning fat for energy, rather than burning carbs.

As we exercise, we are also building muscle, and the workout actually helps us to burn our fuel more efficiently, as we add more LBM to our bodies. Plus, the body's metabolism continues to run long after we are finished exercising.

So, for those of us who are carb sensitive and have trouble staying in the Zone, I think that the exercise will enhance our ability to stay in fat-burning mode.

Exercise helps the HDL to increase, and our diet helps triglycerides to go down. So, by exercising, our TG/HDL ratio is improving.

And, a note regarding my personal experience, I find that the exercise actually helps me to feel satiety after eating! I would not assume this to be the case, but I can easily eat my afternoon snack, then go exercise, and get home and get dinner ready, without feeling hunger. However, if I don't exercise in that period, I tend to feel hunger much sooner. Call me crazy, but that is the truth!

I don't know about exercising until you hurt, but definitely exercising to the point at which you may feel a slight bit winded is fine. If it is slightly difficult to carry on a conversation, you are probably at the right level.

Here's the scrambled tofu recipe. Enjoy!

This makes a delicious breakfast. It's also great for lunch or dinner too!

Ingredients :

Firm or extra firm tofu, crumbled

Light olive oil

Seasoning mix: a lot of onion powder (or granulated onion) mixed with lesser amounts of parsley, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder, and gray sea salt

Hi Margaret,

I meant to mention, about the water. Some people who lose slowly have resumed more steady fat loss simply by drinking more water. I drink about a gallon a day (4 liters) and a little more in hot weather. One way to remember to drink is to refill your water glass whenever you finish it. Another little trick to help you drink more is to use a bigger glass. Another way is to fill a pitcher with water and keep it on the counter or in the fridge, refilling your glass from the pitcher. You can see exactly how much you've had to drink without any need to count or keep track.

Hi Sue

Thanks for the tofu recipe. I have seen one like that before but was a bit scared to try it. I had forgotten about the tofu pudding. Will buy some tofu and use it straight away!

OMG Sue that is a lot of water!! I carry water bottles with me so always have it handy. We have been drinking mineral water with dinner so am getting some in that way. Havent had a diet coke for about a week.

Sue and CC

My monthly cycle came last night - it has been 6 months or so since the last one. This will account for some of the weight!
Had a rough week this week so who knows what my body is doing. It started with thrush, cold sore and then the other .... hope next week is better! Seeing the doctor on 26/2 - see what he can suggest. Actually last time he said to think about lapband surgery but I said no thanks.

CC - have you heard from Karen via your email??? She sounded down in one of her posts. I have been thinking of her.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.

  1. Extraction of fish oil
  2. Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
  3. Absorption – remove heavy metals
  4. Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
  5. Oil conversion to ethyl esters
  6. Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
  7. True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
  8. Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating

Clean Sources

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.

Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.

Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3

Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
