Is there any success stories on asthma and allergies in the zone?

I don't recall reading anything about that in the anti-inflammation book.

I have asthma but don't need to use my "pump". I feel like my lungs are a bit tighter and congested these past couple of days.

I hope it's gonna get better and I would love someday not to have allergies anymore. I love animals and I can't have them because of that!

I picked up my copy of the OmegaRx Zone, and on page 172-175, Sears discusses lung diseases caused by inflammation-asthma, bronchitis, emphysema. Specifically for asthma, he recommends 2-4 tsp of fish oil, or 8-16 capsules.

He does not really include any specific success stories, except for one patient that had emphysema who was able to wean from prednisone and oxygen.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I have a success story.

I used to have to take 8-10 puffs of the preventive type, and still have to use the other puffer for emergency situations. I was wheezing a lot. There were times I couldn't breath. I remember going to the emergency department to get help with breathing.

Moved to an apartment where there was absolutely no carpet. That helped. I wouldn't discount factors like this. But it wasn't everything.

But then I started on fish oil, the zone diet, etc., and today, years later, even though I don't zone perfectly, I haven't had to use my asthma puffers since I started all of the above. The fish oil generates the good eicosanoids to fight the inflammation.

I also lost 51 lbs along the way. But, my asthma left before I lost the 51 lbs. So one can't say that "you lost weight, therefore your asthma went down," because it was the other way around.

Also, my allergies went down considerably even when I wasn't zoning perfectly. Mind you, I get careless and don't take the allergy pill in the spring like I should, and I get sick, really sick, for a week because it just hits me all of a sudden. Usually I do fine without the allergy pill though through the summer anyway, I have so little reaction usually that I don't bother with it, but it's really better to be taking it during the spring and summer until the pollen count goes down.

And I have fairly strong allergies by the way.

I don't push my luck, though, by spending too much time with horses, etc.

But, if I were on the allergy pill all the time, I think it wouldn't be a big problem.

Cranberry, I take 5 g of fish oil right now. How many grams would 8 - 16 capsules be?

alexy: I have a success story too but it has nothing to do with the zone. And since a couple of years, I've been feeling fine never having to use my emergency inhaler and off the every day puffer. I don't take the nasal spray for allergies anymore also. All my symptoms were mainly due to animals. I still have pollen allergies but the symptoms are a lot less severe, only sneezing form time to time. I still don't use any inhaler but have been feeling a bit discomfort for the past week.

Oh, I don't have my book with me right now, will have to get back to you later tonight. In the meantime, you could look at the website under the omega-3 tab above, and the nutritional label will tell you how many grams of fish oil is in 8-16 capsules. Without looking at it right now, I am thinking that 8 capsules comes pretty close to 5 grams, but it depends on whether it is OmegaRx or EicoRx.

If you can specify which one it is that you take, then we should be able to come up with an answer.

Cranberrycat, I don't take Dr. Sears products because of shipping cost and exchange rate.

The oil I take is 400 EPA/200 DHA, 1g per capsule, so I take 5 caps a day (2 at breakfast and 3 at supper). It is rated 5 stars from IFOS as Dr. Sears recommends.

I looked at both OmegaRx or EicoRx from this site and they seem to be the same proportion/concentration: 400/200 1000g per capsule .

Thanks! Each of your capsules contains 600 mg of Omega-3 concentrate. 5 capsules is giving you 3g of concentrate, and so 8 capsules would put you near 5g.

Cranberrycat: How do you come up with 600mg for each capsules I take?

Janet: I don't eat grains anymore except for oatmeal.

What bothers me though is that asthma was fine before. If I'm getting worse since I'm taking fish oil, why would I want to take more? I would think to take less, no? Same for the water I am talking about in another thread. For 3 1/2 months, I have been fine and now I am thirsty in the middle of the night again just like when I use to not take care of my health.
These symptoms have been happening for over a week. And now to add more to it, yesterday afternoon and this afternoon I was feeling this very light headache. And it's not my diabetes because my results are under control. These can't be all coincidences.

So to me, having to take more fish oil doesn't make sense.

Webberte,

I simply added 400 + 200, to get the 600 mg of fish oil concentrate.

Now that I have my book, it does confirm what I said, you would take 8-16 capsules, which is the equivalent of 5-10 grams per day, to control asthma.

Here is my thought on it... if your asthma was under control before starting fish oil, then I don't really see the need for you to increase the fish oil for that reason.

You could consider an increase of fish oil due to your diabetes, but if your TG/HDL levels are under 2, and if you are not obese, then it may not be necessary, either. This is what I am finding in the OmegaRx Zone. I seem to have misplaced my copy of Toxic Fat, so I don't know if this recommendation has been updated or not.

It seems I have been miscalculating the fish oil all along. What is the 1000g per capsule for? Total with the rest of the other ingredients?

So, if I understand correctly, if you eat correctly and are in the zone but if you don't take the proper amount of fish oil, all your health issues are going to come back? Why would that be?

That really doesn't make sense to me. I'm not saying it's or it's not true. I'm just sharing my thoughts. I need to understand this more in depth because just "add more fish oil" doesn't satisfy my logic mind.

For now my diabetes is "controlled" with medication. And I am obese.
I don't know about the triglycerides results. I'm not even sure it is calculated the same way here in Canada.

I'll ask my doctor in 2 weeks and check the results with him.

Thanks Cranberrycat.

Hi webberte,

One capsule of Omega RX contains 1000 mg of fish oil concentrate. This is made up of EPA, DHA, and other components. 400 of these 1000 mg are from EPA and 200 of these 1000 mg are from DHA. So, in every 1000 mg capsule of Omega Rx fish oil concentrate you are getting 600 mg of EPA and DHA combined (400 mg of EPA plus 200mg of DHA equals 600 mg) plus another 400 mg of the other components (600 mg of EPA and DHA combined plus 400 mg of the other components equals 1000 mg of fish oil concentrate).

Doctor Sears' fish oil dosage recommendations refer to the amount of EPA plus DHA only. For example to get Dr. Sears' recommended maintenance dose of 2.5 g (that's 2.5 g of EPA and DHA combined) you would take 4 capsules of Omega Rx (4000 mg of fish oil concentrate). Again, that's 600 mg of EPA and DHA combined in each 1000 mg capsule; 4 capsules (4000 mg of Omega Rx fish oil concentrate) contain 2.4 g of EPA and DHA combined (4 times 600 mg equals 2400 mg; 2400 mg equals 2.4 g).

The amount of Omega Rx you'd take daily depends upon your degree of wellness. Here are Dr. Sears' fish oil dose recommendations taken from his newest book TOXIC FAT:

To maintain wellness, 2.5 g/day (4 caps; 1 teaspoon liquid).

For obesity, type 2 diabetes, or before starting a diet, 5 g/day (8 caps; 2 teaspoons liquid).

For chronic pain, 7.5 g/day (12 caps; 3 teaspoons liquid).

For existing neurological conditions 10 g/day (16 caps; 4 teaspoons liquid).

To gain a better understanding read Toxic Fat. The excess fat in your body increases the amount of inflammation your body generates. That together with your diabetes dictates the amount of fish oil you require to lower your silent inflammation to a level that does not put your health at further risk.

Webberte,

I think Sue explained a part of your question.

I don't think you are understanding quite what I was saying, though.

You have diabetes and obesity. To control silent inflammation generated by these conditions, the Zone Diet plus fish oil supplementation can help to control this silent inflammation.

As for your asthma, it sounds as if you were saying that your asthma was fine until you started taking fish oil. I don't know if the fish oil caused an increase in your symptoms. What I was saying before is that if your asthma was controlled BEFORE taking fish oil, then I would not see a need to increase fish oil dosing just for the asthma. When you mentioned in your first post that you were looking for success stories, I guess I thought you were looking for some guidance on increasing fish oil to treat your asthma.

The Zone Diet alone is an anti-inflammatory diet, and so eating right should help decrease silent inflammation in your body. The fish oil enhances this process. According to Sears, he has some clinical guidelines on fish oil dosing according to chronic conditions that are present. These are just guidelines. You may notice some improvement in your conditions, but not all treatment of these conditions will hinge on whether or not you are taking the fish oil.

Hope that helps!

Thanks both of you for the explanations.

I was looking for success stories and advice also.

I realized when I read your post Cranberrycat that I was miscalculating the doses, thinking I had to add-up the total mg in the caps and not EPA/DHA total only.

I made some ajustments, I took 3 extras caps yesterday and 8 today. I drank more water which may have caused the light headaches. I felt great today. No headaches, full of energy. Only my lungs are a bit congested. Maybe there cleaning up!

Turns out my allergies and asthma problems were due to smog!!! I never felt it before but I guess I do now. Someone has told me that there had been smog for 3 days over the city because it's been very cold and people used their woodstoves/fireplaces more frequently for heating!!! The smog is gone and so are my symptoms! Fiou!

Thanks for the thread.

I have non allergic asthma, which started to be quite out of control about a year ago. I did a burst of oral steriods for the first week of treatment, but since then, maximum doses of inhaled steroids and steroids for the nose. Also, nexium for gastric reflux, since we think that is also playing into the asthma.

I haven't been able to wean the inhaled steroids, and recently have been needing the rescue inhalers on top of it. So I'm a little worried, but hopeful.

I've been zoning for about 3 weeks, have lost 6 pounds since starting, and am feeling like I've been cured of a disease as far as regaining energy.

Very motivated to continue zoning, hopeful about increasing the fish oil.

Oh, and there has recently been a lot of research that shows obesity increases asthma, even apart from the aerobic challenge of carrying extra weight. And losing weight can improve the condition.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
