Hello everybody! :) I would like to know if someone can advise me about the Zone after eating disorders. I had been suffering about this disease from the age of 12 (now I'm 29)... I began a therapy 2 years ago and I quite complitely recovered, but the doctor I go is not very good in follow-up, and I am lapsing again sometimes. (with bulimia) I would like to know how useful the Zone could be for me, and in which terms. I mean, is there a specific book for me? Moreover I would like to know why some doctors say tha the Zone can create kidney problems, and if it is true or not? :?: Thanks a lot Nice regards from Italy!! blue_pearl

Dear Blue Pearl, Congratulations on facing your problems and seeking help. This is the hardest thing, and being honest is what will help you to continue to recover. I have had friends and family who deal with eating disorders and addictions of various types, so I can empathize a little with your situation. First, I would say that if your doctor is not very adept at dealing with your disorder, get another one. Your health is much more important than convenience. The doctor who helps you to stay healthy must consider an eating disorder important, and if you feel you are not getting adequate care, seek help from a doctor who specializes in these disorders. YOU ARE WORTH IT. The Zone has been a great program for me, because it has helped to regulate my blood sugar in a way that I have control over my eating, I eat healthy, vitamin-packed foods, and control my weight. The best part is that I do not have to play "head games" anymore--I don't have to resist urges, I am not unreasonably hungry, and I don't have to deal with irritability and lack of focus due to poor nutrition. The calorie count is lower (around 12-1300 cal./day for me), yet I am not hungry, have lots of energy, and basically don't worry all the time about food. This is a blessing to me. You will find that zone eating is a controlled way of eating, but there is a lot of leeway built in. It's not about guilt, just about health. A lot of eating disorders are based in issues of control, and hopefully the zone can help you to feel in control so you do not need to resort to your old habits. Seeking counseling while you begin this can help, as well as staying in touch with people who can help with the zone lifestyle. (Sue is very helpful, as is Anne-Marie. Please ignore any posts from someone who insults you in all CAPITALS. He may not be supportive.) However, as a person with a disease (which I believe you are recovering from, but there is no such thing as a cure for these things), you will need to be careful that you do not let yourself slip into old habits. Hopefully, you will find the Zone to be helpful for you. It has been for me, and countless others. Please write if you ever need any help--there are some wonderful people on these forums who will be your friend when you need them. (Count me in!) You are worth being healthy! Best of luck, and keep in touch! Ronica

Although I am not an expert on the subject of eating disorders, i have spoken to Zoners that were at one point suffering from Bulimia or Anorexia. They had great results, because they honestly felt they were eating healthy. Unlike binge and purge or not eating at all. This is a low calorie diet, not too be confused with a high protein diet, therefore making you feel that you are doing a world of good to the body. The increase in energy and mental well being has helped those that really want the help.

Dear Ronica and tech@drsears.com, thank you a lot for your kind replies. I am happy to know that the Zone can be good and healthy, and moreover that there are persones like you, who can be helpful. I will certanly not leave my attention upon my eating disorders, and I will look for a new doctor. The secret that has pushed me up to here where I am is some good friends, who made me understand that (although I met some doctors who were not able to be really helpful) I should go on and find the right therapy. :D and by the time I could a little more recover. So thank a lot for your suggestion Ronica, and thank you tech@dr.sears.com for having told me your experience. I am keeping in contact also with an italian forum for The Zone, and I will certainly stay at drsears' forum! Thank you very much, I think you are very kind. Bye bye blue_peral (Susi)

Glad to hear that you are on the road to health. Happily, doctors are not one-size-fits-all, and we can look around to find one who suits us better. I hope you will find someone who can help you to feel more in control and happier with yourself. The zone has helped me because I do feel (like the tech said) that I am eating healthier, and it has got my cravings pretty much under control. I am not always perfectly faithful, but I have to say I am 95% better than I used to be! Best of luck with this. I'll be looking forward to your future posts! Ciao! Ronica :D

Right now i suffer from 3 diffrent eating disorders Anorexic/Bulimic/Compulisive eating disorders they all vary day to day though i am on the lower part of the BMI scale i have the tendency to binge and purge or to restrict to very low calories (200 - ) and i hope the zone works for me i have tried Atkins (caused worse bingeing and chronic headaches) Low Fat (Cold as i was when i just only had anorexia) and my own versions of diets all failing the ZOne seems like a LOT of food though like for dinner i can have 1 1/2 cup of grapes!!!! Thats allot with 4 1/2 oz of deli meat (YUCK!) or 3 oz of tuna (OK) and nuts i guess i am not use to eating so much lol! Saddest thing though i have to give up breakfast cereal my favvvvvvvvvvvvorite!!!!

Hello! I don't know where you live, but here in Madison, WI (at the big grocery store in town) in the health food section is "40-30-30" cereal. With 1% milk and some almonds, a great ZONE breakfast!! It has flakes and crunchies. I think it is very good. And runs about the same as regular cereal in cost! The ZONE is an excellent choice for you. Don't get discouraged by the amount of food at meals. It is OK to mix a little unfavorable carbs with the favorable to make the volume more managable. Good Luck! Michelle
