| Okay. I suspect that one has to eat just a small amt of Kamut Puffs Cereal as part of a complete meal, and drink one little mini-bottle of V8 at another time, to be Zoned. She also wanted to know about quinoa.
However, I'm no quite sure.
So, for a friend who routinely eat the above, I'm asking any of you who may know as to the GI impact, plus other related facts, regarding these two.
Nutritional Information:
ORGANIC KAMUT PUFFS CEREAL -- "100% whole grain goodness" - made from kamut only, which have been cooked and are, well, puffed up.
One cup is:
- 11 grams carbohydrates (refined, I assume?)
- 2 grams protein (inaccessible to the body, I assume?)
- no fat
- 2 grams fiber
Thus, it's 9 grams net carbohydrates per cup. Friend really likes this, so just one cup may be ok as part of a meal? Or is it like whole wheat flour - "healthy" but still very high impact?
V8 ORIGINAL BLEND
She has tiny little cans of these. Very small. Each has only 150 ml.
For each can:
- 1 gm protein
- 6 gm carbo
- 400 mg sodium (!!!)
- 350 mg potossium.
QUINOA: she buy these at the bulk store, then cook them. What's their GI impact, are they favorable or not? I don't think I've heard Dr. Sears say anything about them.
Thanks.

| Hi, the foods you're asking about are unfavorble carb. They would be used in the Zone as condiments, just as all other unfavorable carbs.

Okay, thanks. So even quineo is regarded as a condiment?
Thanks Sue.
Nice talking to you again, too.

Yes. Here is an "Ask Dr Sears" regarding the favorability of quinoa (BTW, it's good to first do a search before asking on here. Most likely the answer to a qn can be found on the site):[/color:6c94e8e37e]
Do you have a question for Dr. Sears?
Dr. Sears will choose one question per day and post an answer here. This is a chance for Zone Members to get feedback directly from the developer of the Zone.

Today's question
"Alternative grains"
"Alternative grains" Dr. Sears, I've gone through all your books yet still have not found the answer to the following question: How much would one zone block be of the alternative grains quinoa and amaranth? Thanks. Dcarlson
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although grains such as quinoa and amaranth have more protein than standard grains, the carbohydrate content is similar. In other words, treat them as you would any other unfavorable grain. (One-fourth cup of quinoa is 31 grams or three blocks. One ounce of Amarnth is about 15 grams or about 1 1/2 blocks.) |

| Hi Sue,
Thank you for answering my question. I was really surprised that quonea (sp!) was considered unfavorable.
You are right, I should have done a search first, before asking online. I feel like there has been so much to learn, that the easiest way is to ask directly, even though the answer may be found via a search.
But, thanks for pasting on Dr. Sears' feedback. I will convey the same to my friend.
Thanks!
