| Do you count the ground flax that you eat as part of your fat for the meal? I've seen some recipes were it says do not count, but I want to be sure before I consider it "free". Also, if it's "free" would that be just 1 Tsp/day?
Just a few days ago I bought a package of ground flax (ground flax meal is called) and keep it in the fridge. According to what I read in other posts, it's already rancid. Is it really? It doesn't smell or taste bad. I'd hate to throw it away, as I've only eaten a few tablespoons. :(
Is it bad to consume in that case, just as added fiber?
Thanks!! Laura |

Hi Laura,
Dr. Sears has written that there's no need to count flax oil. I've also seen him caution not to use more than one T a day. But the 1 T recommendation was for oil , not ground flax. I would think it's reasonable to say you could use a couple or few T ground flax if you want.
I personally wouldn't buy ground flax because the oil in flax seed oxidizes (goes racncid) quiclky. It is preferred to grind the seed just prior to eating. Flax seed is relatively cheap, and can be ground in a few seconds in one of those small hand held electric spice/coffee grinders.
It wouldn't be conducive to good health to consume rancid fats.
I'm not sure how to tell if your ground flax is rancid. I do know that with whole grain flours, the test is to put a small amount in your mouth and chew it . If you get a slightly bitter taste, it means the oils in it have spoiled.
