Hi! I havent read this, but , our daughter was reading one of the Zone books to get herself started and said she thought it said some reason why it was better to eat fruit separately from the meal?? I told her I'd ask here. I've never heard of that. Not necessarily only for a snack, but, just maybe after you've eaten the rest of your meal because of it throwing off some level or not eating it with something else in the meal because ......I dont know. But she was asking me and also said she'd try to go back and find it. Meanwhile, I'm asking for her, and myself!

It may have been in one of the quick start publications? I gave it to her but cant remember which one it was, and, of course now I dont have it to look in! lol
Thanks,
Alene

In all high protein diets, including Zone diet or Dr. Perricone diet, you have to eat protein first, and then whatever carbs, to keep the blood sugar rising as less as possible, to prevent insulin overproduction.

But according to many other diets, for example Body ecology diet by Donna Gates, you have to eat fruits separately from a meal, preferably in the morning , on empty stomach, otherwise it will NOT get digested properly. Fruits suppose to move fast from the stomach area to intestines, but if there is other food in the stomach, then fruits stuck there too long, fermenting and feeding bad bacteria.

The Zone Diet is not a high protein diet.

Also, here's a recent "Ask Dr Sears" Q & A that touches on the subject of beginning your meal with the protein portion, http://www.drsears.com/tabid/399/itemid/11646/Digestion-time-of-protein-and-carbohydrate.aspx

Sue, I understand the protein first idea and usually try to make my first bite protein, but, have you read anything about the fruit ?

I agree that the Zone is not a high protein diet, its a balanced way of eating.

Thanks to both of you for input.
