While debate over Canola Oil vs. Olive Oil continues, and while a combination of using both isn't bad, Olive oil for salads and/or taste, and canola oil with higher flash point for lightly sauteeing veggies: here's some info to digest (pun intended) on the new Enova® Oil: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - from ABOUT.com: A New Kind of Cooking Oil: Scanning the shelves of my local grocery store, I noticed a new kind of cooking oil, one that claims to be very different from the rest, yet it is not a fat substitute. The makers of Enova claim that less of its oil is stored in the body as fat. Let’s take a closer look. Who Is It Made By?: Enova oil is the product of ADM Kao, which is a joint venture between Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), based in Decatur, Illinois, and the Kao Corporation of Japan. What Is It?: Enova oil is essentially a blend of soybean and canola oils. Nutritionally, Enova is similar to regular vegetable oils. A tablespoon still delivers 120 calories and 14 grams of fat, so it is not a low fat or low calorie oil. Is Enova A Heart Healthy Oil?: Most of its fat is unsaturated, with the balance tipped towards polyunsaturated fat (8g) rather than monounsaturated fat (5g). Both types help lower levels of bad cholesterol, but polyunsaturated fat can also lower levels of good cholesterol. The ratio of Omega 6 fatty acids to the more beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids in Enova is 10:1. Ideally this ratio should be closer to 3:1, since excess consumption of Omega 6 has been linked to high blood pressure, inflammation and other chronic diseases. Are there any Saturated Fats or Trans Fats in Enova Oil?: At half a gram per serving, Enova’s saturated fat content is lower than that of its closest counterparts (canola oil has 1 gram of saturated fat). Enova claims to have 0g of trans fat per serving (which is one tablespoon), yet it has not gained approval in European markets because of, among other things, stated concerns about Enova Oil's trans-fatty-acid content. How Does Enova Oil Work?: The key to Enova brand oil is that it is metabolized differently than other oils, which means more of it is burned and less of it is stored as fat, even though the body absorbs it in the same way as conventional fat. Enova is produced through a process that increases natural diacylglycerol (DAG) levels, over triacylglycerols (TAG), which are the main components of regular oils. The lower intestine treats these particular DAG fats differently. Instead of being repackaged and stored in the body as fat, these special DAG molecules are filtered into the bloodstream and broken down in the liver instead. Substituting Enova for conventional oils may help lower blood lipid levels, especially triglycerides. Although research is still continuing, initial studies have shown reductions in post-meal triglyceride levels of more than 30%; other studies showed some fat loss, too. Although Enova oil has been available in the United States since January 2005, it has been sold in Japan under the brand name Healthy Econa Cooking Oil since 1999, and has become Japan's bestselling cooking oil. Light in color and mild in taste, Enova oil has been given GRAS status—“generally recognized as safe”—by the Food and Drug Administration, which means it can be used for home cooking, as well as an ingredient in salad dressings, mayonnaise, spreads and other processed foods. I just started seeing Enova oil on the grocery shelf. Is this better than vegetable oil or would you still recommend extra-virgin olive oil? A Answer (Published 9/20/2005) Enova oil is a new salad and cooking oil from Japan made from a combination of soy and canola oils. The purported advantage of Enova over other polyunsaturated oils is a difference in chemical structure said to help reduce body fat. Most of the fat Enova oil contains is known as diacylglycerol (DAG), which the body processes differently than other fats. While DAG oil is digested and absorbed like other fats, afterwards it appears to go directly to the liver to be burned for energy rather than circulating through the body. Although DAG contains the same number of calories as other types of oil (about 120 per tablespoon), the manufacturer of Enova oil claims that less of it is stored in the body. This is supposed to help with weight control. The promotional materials I've seen claims that Enova oil may actually help you lose weight if you substitute it for conventional oil. Based on what I've learned about how DAG oils act in the body, if you substitute them for other types of oils used in cooking or for making salad dressings, you might lose a little weight - possibly between three and four pounds - over the course of a year. Claims that Enova oil has a beneficial effect on serum triglyceride levels haven't been borne out by research so far. While Enova oil may be healthier than polyunsaturated oils, it is not healthier than olive oil. The monounsaturated fats found in olive oil and nuts are the healthiest type of fat of all and the type I recommend that you rely on the most (in addition to omega-3 fatty acids). I always recommend using extra-virgin olive oil. If you don't want too strong a flavor of olive oil in a particular dish, use a good neutral-flavored oil such as expeller-pressed canola oil. Other neutral oils, such as grapeseed oil, might be better suited for higher temperature cooking. There are also well-made designer oils that have been altered to have a higher heating point and a more monounsaturated-fat profile, such as the high-oleic versions of safflower and sunflower oil made by Spectrum. Enova Oil may be a healthier choice than most polyunsaturated oils, which I believe promote cancer, inflammation, damage to the immune system and premature aging. John, I skimmed the information that you presented, and will read it more carefully a bit later. So, my take on it is that it would work the same way as other oils in the initial digestive process, by slowing the rate of carb digestion, and keeping insulin levels lower. However, it won't be stored as fat. Right? I see this as a definite benefit, but the product alone would not cause fat loss, it would just promote using IT'S fat for energy. Do you see this product as something that would promote more fat burning, even after all of the fat from the product has been burned? |

While preliminary information indicates that it may be beneficial, the higher ration of Omega-6's should also be a consideration - something that we Zoners look at, but it appears not so much a concern to others. I'll stick with Extra Virgin Olive Oil for salads and taste, and canola oil for cooking, lite sauteeing. For now . . . |

Hi, I am new to the Zone but pretty aware nutritionally. I use EVOO but not for cooking since olive oil doesn't hold up to med or high heat. Grapeseed Oil is a good choice for cooking since it is stable at high temps. I also have read a lot of good things about Virgin Coconut Oil (it has to be virgin, not just organic). It can be used for cooking and as a healthy substitute for butter. I love it on vegetables. I would very wary of anything made by Archer Daniels Midland company. I haven't seen anything by Dr. Sears about using Virgin Coconut Oil and would like to use it in the diet. There are so many health benefits to VCO. I have learned alot on Dr Mercola's site -- www.mercola.com. He is a big fan of the Zone Diet! Does anyone know if there is anything Zone related about Virgin Coconut Oil? Thanks! |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
