Hi, there!

...Well, I'm about halfway through reading Dr. Sears' "A Week In The Zone," and it all sounds very good and reasonable... except for one small thing... It seems that 99% of cereals are "oitside" The Zone... Unfortunately, for me, I've been eating a small bowl of Original Cheerios with skim milk EVERY DAY of my life, for as long as I can remember... Does being on The Zone mean I have to give up my beloved Cheerios entirely?:blink:

Advice, please!

~Thanks,
Nina:)

If I were a hard-core Zoner, I'd say "yes, you'll have to give them up" or at the very least use them only as a garnish (a couple of tbsps only). But I'm not a hard-core Zoner (I use the Glycemic Load of a food, not Sears' arbitrary rating of favourable or unfavourable) so I'll say "see how they work for you on the plan" once you've added the correct amount of protein and fat to complete your blocks for the meal. If you're hungry an hour or two after you have your Cheerios meal, then you'll have to at least cut way back on them because they're not working to keep you in The Zone.
Unfortunately, I don't think they'll work because they're low-fibre and high-glycemic.

According to the USDA database, one cup of regular Cheerios has 20g net carbs (fairly low compared to a lot of ready-to-eat cold cereals) but with only 3g of fibre. Adding 1/2 cup of skim milk would bring you just 2g of carbs shy for a 3-block meal. So you can only add a few nuts and protein powder to complete the meal. Depending on what your meal timing is, do you think that would get you through several hours to lunch?

Nina, perhaps you would consider another cereal option?

There is a Zone cereal that you can purchase, sometimes you can find it in stores.

If that doesn't interest you, you could also consider Kashi Go Lean cereal. Not as favorable of a choice, but it would probably be better than Cheerios.

Or, you could eat a smaller bowl and add some fruit to supplement the carbs. That way, you can still have the cheerios but just less of them. Don't forget to add protein and fat!

Hi Nina! Well, I'm not hard core either, but, you have to balance, thats the key. How much of a serving do you eat? Do you eat a full cup or more? Have you started the Zone way of eating yet at all? I know, full of questions.......

You could cut back to less than one cup of Cheerios, add a favorable carb like maybe one of those cups of applesauce on the side. Adding cinnamon slows the rush of the sugar from the carbs into the blood stream so you could add some to your cereal or applesauce. You'll have to eat protein with it or use protein powder on your cereal which will possibly ruin the taste you are used to..........so, I'd opt for turkey bacon on the side. .....see, things get a little complicated when you eat the cheerios and try to balance because right now the only protein you're getting is from the milk and thats not enough to balance.

Like when I eat oats, I use a minimal amt. for my carb then add an egg and bacon on the side so that I can balance the carbs with protein and fat. You'll find, if you havent started, that each meal is a balancing act. You can actually have lots of fun deciding what to have that will keep you in balance and losing the weight is a "side effect" from keeping your blood sugar level !

'Bottom line is, if you are going to be really unhappy without the Cheerios, I'd say, If you have the Zone Food Block list, look on the "Unfavorable Carbs", find what is closest to your cereal per block and work it in with other foods to balance the meal, THEN, see how you feel in 4 hrs. ! If it works for you, if you arent starving before then......I'd keep it ! Its a matter of finding out what works for YOU to stay in the Zone for 4 hrs. at a time......not what anyone else eats, not just what Dr. SEars says, just what works for you because we're all different.

Hope this helps! Have a blessed day,
Alene

CBCat, how many net carbs does Kashi Go-Lean have in the U.S.? I've seen it mentioned on other sites as a good low-glycemic cereal. But it has somthing like 38g of net carbs per serving in Canada which is far too high. The same products aren't always the same formula for us. Is it lower in the U.S.?

Hey Bev-Ann, not CBCat but my Kashi Go LEan has 20 grams net carbs.......30 g less the 10 g dietary fiber, right? I didnt know the formulas were different for Canada! INteresting! I wonder why. You would think it would be more costly to mess with the formula than to just make all the boxes the same. The Kashi GoLean has 13 g protein, which makes it either the highest or close to it, in the dry cereals I think.

Thanks Alene. In Canada, the original Kashi Go-Lean cereal has 42g of total carbs and only 4g of fibre. I don't know why they would use a different formula, but it's not the only product to do so. And remember that we don't count the protein unless it's from animals, soy or protein powders so not all of the 13g in your cereal count. Unfortunately, it doesn't say how much of that is from the soy protein.

Nina, you could try "All-Bran Guardian" cereal if it's availabe where you are. It's high-fibre low-glycemic and reminds me of Cheerios.

Bev-Ann,
Yes, it is much lower here. I don't have the figures but I can check later (hubby brought a box home last night).

There are several varieties of Kashi cereal. I am pretty certain that the one I am talking about is GO LEAN, as it also has much more protein. THe only think lacking is the fat, and I tend to just sprinkle some slivered almonds into it, and call it good.

CBCat, the original Kashi Go-Lean is the one I'm talking about too. And as I mentioned to Alene, you don't know how much of the protein in your cereal is from soy so you can't count it all.

I found the Canadian website for Kashi Go-Lean and I was mistaken...it's 37g total carbs minus 5g fibre for a net of 32g in 1 cup of cereal. But that's still way too high and the calories are higher too...200/cup vs. only 140/cup in the U.S. version. The ingredients are the same, though. :scratching head:
I sent them an email and asked "why".

Nina, bottom line on that bowl of Cheerios is that it's probably not going to allow you to stay in the Zone.

Kashi Go Lean--
Ingredients:
Soy grits, Kashi Seven Whole Grains and Sesame™ (hard red winter wheat, long grain brown rice, whole grain oats, barley, triticale, rye, buckwheat, sesame seeds), evaporated cane juice syrup, corn meal, corn flour, soy protein, wheat bran, oat fiber, corn bran, honey, evaporated cane juice, natural flavors, calcium carbonate, salt, annatto color.

Serving Size: 1 cup
Calories: 140
Fat: 1 gram
Protein: 13 grams
Carb: 30 grams, fiber: 10 grams, net carb 20 grams

The main ingredient is soy grits, and most of the protein is coming from that. Anyway, as is, this is a balanced 2 block cereal (missing fat) on paper. It is still a better choice than cheerios! And, it has worked well for me, in times of need.

Nina,
Here's a strange idea. How about breakfast of 3 block cottage cheese, apple, chopped=2 blocks and almonds=3 fat to make up the third carb block add 1 block cheerios? It's a little over the 25% unfavorable but may be a way to work in some cheerios.

I bought some Zone cereal and had a ziplock baggie of some that got crushed in my briefcase. It sat on my counter until I decided to sprinkle a couple spoonfuls onto my breakfast to get rid of it slowly. I'm not adding a whole block but thought that the cereal added a nice crunch.

Cheril, I would agree, if Nina wants to try to work it in, I would think she could try to make it that 25% of unfavorable carb in her meal!

CBCat, here's the info from original Kashi Go-Lean cereal in Canada:

Per 1 cup serving:
Calories: 200
Fat: 1g
Protein: 13g
Total Carbs: 37g
* Fibre: 5g
* Sugars: 9g
* Starch: 23g
* NET CARBS: 32g

The ingredients listed are the same as your example. I would only count a max of 10g of protein since there will be about 3g or more from the other ingredients that aren't soy-based.

So, the protein is the same as ours in the US, but carbs and fiber are different? I wonder why there is such a difference?

Anyway, on products like this, when the label is the only thing to go by on how it zones out, I usually just judge it based on what I know about the product and how it works for me. And, as I said, it isn't a "perfect" solution, but it still appears to stack up better than Cheerios. I wonder if Mendosa lists it on his website?
