Beverly, I hope you find this topic. As I was reviewing some information on www.mendosa.com, at the bottom of the page was an advertisement for Dreamfields Pasta. So, I went to the page and looked up some nutrition information.

I am a bit confused. Looking at a nutrition label for Rotini pasta, it says that there are 42 grams of carb, and 5 grams of fiber. The net carb should be 37 grams (this is for 2 oz of pasta).

However, to the right of the nutrition label, it says just the opposite. It says to subtract 37 grams of "controlled carbohydrate" for a net digestible carb total of 5 grams. Sounds opposite of what I would think we should do.

Do you know why?

I'm surfing out of curiosity.

Why do you say that Dreamfields Pasta only has 5 grams of digestible carbs when the nutrition label states that it has 42 grams of carbohydrates?
While the total number of carbohydrates is the same as regular pasta, our patent pending formula and unique manufacturing process protects all but 5 grams of carbohydrates from being digested. The Dreamfields fiber and protein blend creates a protective barrier to reduce starch digestion in the small intestine. Is that the Q&A that you copied from the website? I read that after I posted the topic. At first, I was confused, I thought you were asking ME the question, but your post is the Q&A from the website, right? LOL!

Anyway, I was thinking the same thing, fuzzy math!

Dreamfields pastas have only 5 grams of DIGESTIBLE carbs per 2 oz. serving. The rest is resistant starch and inulin, both of which act like fibre in that the body can't digest them and they don't raise blood sugar. But resistant starch and inulin are listed as total carbs instead of fibre because the USDA or FDA or both don't recognize them as fibre.
Go back to the Dreamfields site and read their explanation.

Bev, all I found was the same as what Cheril posted as the Q&A topic on the previous post. Do you have a link to more specific information?

I wonder how the ingredients compare to the Zone pasta? My goal, before I posted this thread, was to compare both products, with regard to the nutrition label and the ingredients. I think I will still do that.

OK, I found more information from the Dreamfield website. These are the 3 ingredients that are listed as the fiber blend. I would have guessed that these ingredients were only in the 5 grams of fiber listed on the label, but I think Beverly is saying that these ingredients are the 37 grams of carb that is undigested. Is that right?

Inulin: Inulin, unlike insulin, is a naturally-occurring, plant storage non-digestible carbohydrate found in over 36,000 plants worldwide. Inulin naturally occurs in cereal grains, onions, asparagus, bananas, raisins, garlic and many other commonly consumed plants. Unlike normal starch, it is not digested by the body, but is used as preferred food (dietary fiber) by a select group of health-promoting bacteria called lactic-acid producing bacteria (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli); the same bacteria as those found as active cultures in many yogurts and fermented dairy products. These bacteria grow and produce fermentation products to help support a healthy immune system, modulate glucose and lipid metabolism in the liver, help improve calcium absorption, and help keep the colon functioning properly for recycling of water and electrolytes.

Xanthan gum: is a food gum with dietary fiber properties that was developed to perform as a thickening agent for pourable salad dressings, sauces and gravies, pastry fillings, puddings, dairy products, and fruit juices. Xanthan gum is made using a fermentation process that employs the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. This organism utilizes sugars, like corn glucose to produce the gum. It is not digested by the body, but reaches the colon intact where it is used for food by resident microflora that produce products of the fermentation process that help reduce cholesterol and smooth fluctuations in blood glucose, and help maintain the health of the large intestine (colon). Xanthan gum is a widely used and approved food ingredient.

Pectin: Pectin is a food gum and dietary fiber that is present in many fruits and is used as a gelling agent or thickening agent for pourable salad dressings, sauces, gravies, pastry fillings, puddings, several dairy products, and fruit juices.


Now, here is the ingredients list for the Zone pasta:
Durum wheat semolina, pea protein isolate, soy protein, high amylose maize starch, and egg white.

In 27 grams of carb, there is still 5 grams of fiber, but it appears as though the pasta is basically wheat and protein, whereas the Dreamfields pasta is wheat and the fiber blend. If it is true that the net carbs are only 5 per 2 oz serving, then the Dreamfields would definitely be a better product!

I would love to know more about the Dreamfield product. Since it is not clear to me, based on how the label reads, I would really like to know how many carbohydrates are accounted for in the fiber blend, and how may carbs are actually true durham wheat seminola.

They are saying that the fibre blend is the 37g undigestible carbs. Since the FDA (or is it the USDA?) won't allow them to list them as fibre on their label, the label shows them only as total carbs. So you simply cannot go by the label to make a comparison.
I can tell you that I'm carb-sensitive and I ate a lot of it when I followed low-carb for several years. It never stopped me from losing weight. And I recently had a Zone meal with a serving of it (plus meat and sauce) and it kept me nicely in the Zone.

Well, sounds to me like it would be a good product, if it only has 5 grams of digestible carb--compared to the Zone product which has 27 grams of digestible carb. And, you can really make a meal out of the Dreamfields, instead of a "teaser" meal with the zone pasta.

You'll have to try it to determine if it's a good Zone food for you. I don't eat it often anymore but it works well for me when I do and there are some meals that just need pasta as an accompaniment, like 'Chicken Cacciatore'. :-)

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
