The book that I read said no more than 25% per meal which is a lot to me. I only started Zoning a few days ago and so far I haven't had any that I know of. I don't go by their definition because I find it to be quite random. Carrots started out as unfavourable but migrated to favourable because they have a high nutrition profile. Peas have the same glycemic index as carrots and a good nutrition profile, but they're still considered unfavourable. But they both have a low glycemic load so that doesn't make sense. And oats are considered favourable even though they have a very high glycemic load compared to barley and beans or legumes. Again, it doesn't make sense. I'm starting to wonder if he just picked favourable or unfavourable depending on how much he likes the food. ;-) |

LOL, I like your humor, Beverly! I know about the story behind carrots, that they have a higher GI but they actually work out to have a lower GL. However, I had never checked out peas before. We could be missing a lot of good nutritional value if we avoid peas altogether. What is the GL of an equivalent serving of carrots and peas? Just curious. And, to help add some information to Bev's answer, Sears allows up to 25% unfavorable carb per meal. This is only because it makes the "diet" more tolerable to those who feel too restricted to only favorables, and allows us to still be able to work in our "favorite" carbs in condiment portions. However, results will be better if one chooses more on the favorable side. |

The GI of cooked carrots is 65 (medium) for a GL of 3.25 in a 1/2 cup serving. The GI of cooked peas is 48 (low) for a GL of 2.88 in a 1/2 cup serving. Another one I found last night is grapes. He has them on the favourable list at 1/2 cup per block. They have a GI of 42 so a 1/2 cup serving has a GL of 5.46. Most fruit servings on his favourable list have a GL of around 3. For example, 1/2 an apple has a GI of 34 for a GL of only 3.06 with more nutrition than grapes. If you're supposed to keep the GL (Zone Points) at 5 or less per block, 1/2 a cup of grapes puts you over. 1/3 cup of grapes would be acceptable. And then there's oatmeal. Steel-cut oats have a GI of 42 for a GL of 3.36 in a 1-block serving of 1/2 oz dry. Barley, on the other hand, has a GI of only 21 for a GL of only 0.84 in the recommended 1-block serving of 1/2 tbsp dry. |

I noticed that you are using 1/2 cup serving sizes for the comparisons. But, a block of carrots is 1 cup cooked, whereas peas are 1/2 cup cooked (so basically that makes carrots look even worse, and peas look better). Keep in mind, when comparing the GL and the Zone points, that the actual zone point is not the actual GL of the food. Rather, I believe that this point value is Sears own "scale". Sure is interesting! I have been working on putting a spreadsheet together that contains block values as well as the Zone point values and the GL of the food. So much more work to be done on this project! But, I think that it will prove to be very interesting! I am including calculations so that the serving size can be changed, and then the block calculation will change, as well as the GL and the Zone point calculation. |

I used 1/2 cup for the carrots to prove the point that his calcs are way off. And if it's Sears own scale then it makes even less sense! I give up...I'm just going to use the GI to calculate the GL CORRECTLY and keep my net carbs within the range for the block. |

I am not getting the same figures that you are. We might be using different scales. I am using www.nutritiondata.com, and they get their information on GI and GL from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This is the international table of glycemic index and glycemic load values published in 2002. You can find the website at: http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/76/1/5 Anyway, this is what I found: cooked Carrots, 1 cup: 11g carb, 5g fiber = 6 grams net carb, GL=2 (so if Sears lists one cup as a block, perhaps it should be listed as 1.5 cups per block) cooked Peas, 1/2 cup: 11g carb, 4g fiber = 7 grams net carb, GL=4 (not a bad GL for an unfavorable carb!) Anyway, just for the sake of discussion, I think that we might be getting different results, as we might not be using the same data source. And, it is possible that Sears is not using the same data source as we are, either! Overall, I do think that using the GL as a guide is a smart move. Just try not to be too rigid with the numbers. It is really just an "average", and you and I may not be "average" as far as how our bodies react to it. |

I was also checking out that database. There is such a wide range of values! For instance, what would you use for cooked carrots? Carrots, peeled and boiled from Australia, or boiled carrots from Canada (bet you are using the Canadian carrots!)? Anyway, the GI range is between 41 and 92 (which is basically the difference between low and high). The carb grams per serving are close (4.2 and 4.6), and the GL ranges from 1.9-3.9. I am not sure what term to use for a search on peas. Simply putting peas in the search field did not give me anything that I would consider to be peas. |

| Hey:) I am new to all this....so my question may seem very stupid to you....but I simply can't understand exactly how much is 1 cup? I see this "1 cup of this is 1 carb block, 1/2 cup of that is 1 carb block..." but here we don't use this measurement, I am much more familiar with grams, ounces etc..., so please help :) |

Hi D, Cups measure volume in fluid ounces (1 cup = 8 fluid ounces). Fluid ounces convert to liters and ml. You can use an online metric coversion table to figure out the equivalents. If you do an internet search you'll find lots of easy to use free conversion sites. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
