I've never liked most vegetables although I'm trying to eat more now with this diet. I was wondering if it is okay to substitute 2 servings of vegetables for a can of V8 each day?

V-8 is unfavorable carb (all juices aer unfav C) and won't have the same hormonal effect (insulin lowering ability) of eating the actual veggie servings. In other words, yes you can, but it probably won't allow you to stay in the Zone.

Susan, thanks for the reply! Can you explain more on why it's an unfavorable carb? isn't V-8 100% blended vegetables with nothing else added? Isn't that the same as me blending fruit together to make a smoothie vs eating them whole? Please help as I am very confused about this. Thanks!

Hi ralph,

V-8 is listed as an unfavorable C in "Mastering the Zone" (page 330). The more a food (including a favorable C) is processed, the less favorable it becomes. Juice usually lacks a lot of the fiber of the original veggies /fruits it's made up of, and, as a result, contains the insulin stimulating C of the original veggie/fruit in a very concentrated form giving it more potential to raise blood sugar than if you were consumng the whole vegetable. In addition, being a liquid, it goes into the blood stream more quickly than C in a solid, and stimulates the blood sugar more quickly than a solid. This, in turn, stimulates more insulin production than if you'd eaten the veggie prior to juicing it. Liquids in general don't keep some individuals in the Zone, simply because their large surface areas let them enter the blood stream more quickly than solid food (picture 1/2 cup of liquid poured onto a table top, as compared to one cup chopped veggies placed onto a table top, and think about the differences in surface area).

No, juicing is not the same as "blending fruit together to make a smoothie vs eating them whole", as I explained above. That said, some people can't even stay in the Zone with a Zone favorable smoothie, due to their large surface area, and can only stay in the Zone when they eat the fruit whole. I happen to be one of them. I eat a tweaked version of a Zone smoothie, which I've adjusted over and over until it worked for me. Essentially, I've eliminated the liquid in the recipe (milk), tweaked other ingreds, included extra fiber, and I barely blend it. It's very thick, so thick a spoon stands straight up in it, more a like a very thick "freeze" than a smoothie or shake. I use frozen fruit, and sparingly, barely 2 blocks fruit in a 3 1/2 block smoothie). You can't quite drink this smoothie, but rather you eat it with a spoon (and even chew some of it!).

If you choose to drink V-8, it should be treated as unfav C, and should represent no more than 25% of all the C in your meal. Even then, you should see how you feel 4 hours later to determine if it keeps you in the Zone.

Hey Sue,

I'm back on the Zone after being away for a few years. Aaargh...

Anyway, you may have already posted this, but do you mind writing your recipe for the smoothy mentioned above?

I also need to stay away from wheat and milk products -- though, like you, I am able to eat a little yogurt.

Glad to see you're back!

I don't think I've ever posted it, but it's a variation of a recipe in the book "The Soy Zone", "Zoned Cocoa - Banana Cherry Freeze", which I've tweaked and played with a little bit to make it work better for me. The recipe (the one in the book, not mine) has recently been included in the recipes on this site. Liquid meals and unfavorable C don't work well for me, and I require a 3P/2C/extra F balance, so I've changed a lot in the recipe. Mine comes out very thick, so thick a spoon stands upright in it. I've eliminated the liquid except for a tiny bit of soy milk to help it blend. I changed the nut butter to 1 scant T of the Zone brand of extra virgin olive oil. I use a block less of fruit (about 1/2 block of frozen banana, and 1 1/2 blocks of frozen cherries. I also add generous amounts of cinnamon and turmeric to aid in insulin control and inflammation lowering. The taste of turmeric doesn't come through with so much cocoa powder and cinnamon in it. I also add a heaping T of fat free OG yogurt, and I usually use alcohol free almond flavor instead of vanilla. I start my breakfast each day with a serving of Sea Health Plus and my fish oil dose. That plus this frozen smoothie keeps me for a good 5 hours, even up to six on ocassion.

Can i just post a suggestion here, experiment using v8 and add more fat to the meal.. cook you rprotein in plenty of olive oil and add a handful of cashews or something. this should help with insulin secretion.. v8 might be a more unfavourable carb but its still not as bad as bread or rice i would think.. its all down to experimentation!

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
