Hi all--

Just started back on the Zone after a 4 year hiatus, and after reading some posts here on the forum I have discovered that carrots are now on the favorable carb list. And that 1 cup sliced = 1 C. Yay!!!!!!

I'd like to know what else has changed. Can anyone give me directions on where to find the new C lists? I have a buncho of Dr. Sears's books but they're all several years or more old.

Hi Amy-again! Here is a short snippet from Sue talking about the Glycemic Load index which you will read more about in Dr Sears books the Anti Inflammation Zone "Glycemic load..a function of GI , based on amount of any given food usually eaten in a serving size...read more about it in The Top 100 Zone Foods GL of any given meal shouldn't go above 3000, an even that's too high for many people(the Carb sensitive ones). Look for more info on Zoneliving or drsears.com. I'm not sure if it's explained there,but if not, go to a book store, find a copy of "Top 100 Zone Foods" , sit down in the store and read pgs 289 -295. Explains it in detail. May give you second thoughts about eating certain things, especially bread. :)

In fact Top 100 Zone Foods and The Anti-Inflammation Zone, are the two I'd most recommend.

BTW, 1 slice of WW bread GL of 1287....one small bagel...get this...GI of 3914!!!! one cup linguini..GI of 4424. One cup Zucchini...200.

Thanks for your replies! Thanks for the tip on the GL...I had forgotten about that aspect of things. I have the Top 100 and I will go re-read that.

But just so's you know, nary a crumb of bread nor a noodle of pasta has touched my lips since I started back...nor will they. I'm lucky (depending on how you look at it) that carbs are not my primary food addiction...fat and salt are. A few kalamata olives or an extra ounce of full-fat raw milk cheese (not the best but better than a high GL sub) will usually do it for me if any cravings get to me here in the beginning. Which, after about a month I won't have any cravings, anyway, if my prior experience with the Zone is any indication.

But anyways, thanks again for your help!

Good for you Amy! Sounds like you know what to expect and how your body reacts. I am down 5# already and feeling great this week..I had a rocky start due to some xtra carb sensitivity, but now I am sailing along. Let us know how you do!

Hello! I'm from Finland (that is, Europe :) and here we don't use the same ounces and cups for measuring foods so it's a little difficult to know the exact amounts.
Is there a similiar site somewhere in the Net (to this one , which was mentioned already before: http://www.drsears.com/foodblockguide.page ) including the european measures?

For grams you can follow the 9-7-3 rule.

9 grams of effective carbs (total carbs - fiber = effective carbs)
7 grams of low fat protein
3 grams of mono unsaturated fat

If there is some fat in the protein just cut the 3 grams down a bit.

I don't know of any other site that has a detailed list like you would get in MTZ or AIZ, except for the paid subscription site at www.zonediet.com.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
